Tsunamis are my absolute greatest fear as far as natural disasters. I know the probability is not as high as a earthquake volcano or tornado but it truly terrifies me. I had a science teacher in 9th grade who would always talk about an island in the Canary Islands that was experiencing a slow drop into the ocean,and if it split and fell off it would send giant tsunami in 15 min to the east coast. That was when my fear was born 😂

I was 5 years old and remember the explosion clearly. Although we lived 150 miles northeast of Texas City, we felt the blast. I was walking along a country road with my mother and dad when the ground shook under our feet. Mother said, “What in earth was that?!” Later we heard about the explosion in Texas City. So horrible. Thank you for posting this. Too many people - people who have grown up in the area - know absolutely nothing about this tragedy.

I have been lucky enough to have anchored in this bay several times. The surge line on both shores was super obvious in 1994. I have video of it somewhere.

Thanks for this very informative documentary about the subject! I’ve known since I was a child born in 1959 growing up in Dallas Texas I’d always assumed it was oil and gas related! Texas City is loaded with refineries and huge tanks! Another large explosion involving a pipeline happened nearby I guess earlier leveling a school. A storage facility in West, Texas a small town near Waco also had a big explosion but nothing compared to this.
