I heard “fashion souls” when y’all were discussing the nasal bascinet and I knew this sport was for me. I’m gonna need to save for some armor it seems

Train. Now. Armor is heavy.
I’m wanting to get into this in Texas, I’ve been watching these and countless videos about armored combat, you guys are seriously so helpful and educational! Thank you!
Pro trick : watch movies at kaldroStream. Me and my gf have been using it for watching all kinds of movies these days.
@Dean Imran yup, I have been using Kaldrostream for months myself =)
As a Texan I'm really just terrified of doing this full armored in the Texas Sun.
I wish I could afford to do this sort of thing. In Texas tho, it’s just too damn hot.
@@TonyGonzales2 there’s three or four texas teams
I think the Sallet is such a cool looking helm, generally.
Fr!
The T in sallet is a hard t because the french name for sallet is sallade
this is great, im new to Buhurt and you guys provided a lot of useful information, gladdened by the fact that my first helmet purchase will now be significantly more informed thanks to you.
Thanks Rocco. We're really glad we can help people like yourself
Awesome stuff ! Would love to that sport. Greetings from Austria !
Great stuff! Keep it up!
I love this im glad you guys are making content for this sport. I bought my cuisses and arms first, first thing was obviously arming doublet.
Great video dudes, keep it going🛡🛡⚔️
Gotta love Sallets
Please do cuirass, shoulder armor variations too
If you have a wider vertical slot in the Barbute your breathing and low vision really improve. Since you're already putting anachronistic extra bars in, that's a good option.
i had 14ga sugarloaf forged on a 1420s tapered basinet,(formerly klappervisor) i went to local blacksmith to have some more holes drille dout but in a nice way, he managed to add 4 more crosses type holes plus 3? simple circle holes. he inlaid brass strips added metal flap around lower jaw maiables. best 250 bucks spent. and it stayed perfectly within rules and specs permitted. I could breathe way way easier and i can see peoples feet. some people like sallets after borrowing both lobstertail sallet and bevor for test. but i found fatal flaw there near bevor and visor-down area where a weapon could slip in. so this guy had a V shaped iron bar added to his curiass after research. the french had this problem when they faced archers. The arrows would bounce off breastplate, and slip right between bevor and visor-down. scalp you. so his another solution was to flare out the bevor into a lazy C shaped around the rim added holes across his bevor ear to ear. He then added leather padding, stitched it in. it provided a decent seal between visor and bevor . Funny enough it also blocked out sun glare reflecting off peoples sabatons into his eyes through that gap. we sat down and talked about this. " I wonder they had similar issues back in 1480s" i said "probably but back then peoples feet was covered in mud and horse crap so".
Hey I’m from Ogden and would love to learn more about this sport and how I should get started and I would love to talk about what training gear I’d need!
great stuff
Damn I'm really digging the great helm.
I got an idea get a bunch of high school football players and have them play just a regular game of football but in the medieval armor that would be a cool experiment
I’ve always loved armored combat sports. I’ve always the thought the rule about matching time periods/regions is a bit silly. It makes it harder to get into the sport, I can understand in Europe where’s there’s the heritage it makes a little bit of sense where here in America I like the idea of you put what you have together.
Agreed. I think there should at the very least be a "historically accurate" branch and then a "so long as its safe/works" side
Would allow for far more people to join and grow the sport, and would ultimately have the best of both worlds
greathelm
its a great helm...
good visibility breathing and protection, but its heavy
I'm surprised you guys didn't include the wolfrib bascinet, nowadays I think 8 fighters out of 10 use a wolfrib.
nice video wpuld like to see them / u all in full armor especially the sallet
There are a few videos with fights on the youtube. My youtube has some, as well as the social media accounts. I'm the sallet btw.
Excellent info thx 💪
Where did you guys buy the Great Helm from? Or rather - do you have any great helm recommendations?
Good information
You guys should integrate the 14th century wolfrib in this collection with pro's and con's
Wolfrib is the best for the sport
Woah, do you know where I can get these helmets?
Bit of a reach here but I'm actually looking to get into the hobby and wondered where some of you buy your mild steel sheets for armor? I really like early greenwich close helms.
Not a lot of mild steel, lot of tempered steel. Also good luck getting a full harness suitable for a close helm. You'll need the more expensive 16th century armour to match it.
As far as helmets go I know that some fighters have their own unique style of helmet like Paul Friedel, are you allowed to have your own style of helmet as long as it follows the specific time era and region that the rest of your armor follows?
That really depends on what fighting league you are with. Some are more lenient on being 100% accurate. But if you are with HMB, you have to have it almost exact as the source.
@@gavinbeaton4112 Thanks for the help really appreciate it thanks for giving me a better understanding 😁👍
Paul Friedel uses a real historical helmet, even if it doesn't come in the right metal tint. His helmet is very eastern and you see the Cumans wear them along with lamellar style armor.
I think they take small liberties with the armor, metal tint, metal type, metal thickness, and small modifications like more holes, face cages and stuff.
As for making a helmet that "could've" existed alongside it, I don't know the answer to that.
If I had 16th century German armor; cuirass, gauntlets etc. everything but the helmet, and I wanted a helmet that looks like a horse or dragon that would be wicked, but historically it would likely end up considered parade armor, which was never used in battle, battle armor is pretty standard and trendy sadly.
I think it would be really fun to mess around in my own custom helmet, and getting to test different designs made in modern times, wouldn't that be interesting?
May I ask where you bought the Sallet from? I've been searching all over but can't seem to find any with a barred visor.
This sallet was an anvil dragon. But we reccomend wild armory if you want a sallet
A question from someone who likes Lego Castle: The guard helms that are common in the majority of Lego Castle themes, do they have a direct representative out of history?
Would enlarging the holes on the pig-faced bascinet improve visibility and oxygen? I don’t mean significantly but marginally. I wear an ROA bascinet and the visibility is pretty good, maybe a bit reduced in the ⬆️⬇️ range
Main cam: Outlast

Check tryhard bascinet of
Simon Rohrich which gives perfect fision but almost opened for stabs. But nobody stabbing.
We're did grant get his sallet and bevor from or was it made in house ?
Would a hounskull bascinet be a good idea? I love the helmet but I'm concerned about the beak restricting breathing.
exactly what I've been looking for. I also worry if the beak would be easily grabbed.
I'm just getting into the sport, like, found out it exists and learning about it at the very beginning level, no gear or any experience. Any tips for a lad such as myself? Other resources? Any vets with tips on "I wish I knew xyz before I started" etc etc.? Thanks for any response. Also, I'm in the St. Louis metro area, so anyone reading this who is on a team around here that's extra helpful. 🇺🇸🏴🇮🇪🏴🏴
The best thing you can absolutely do is find a local team and go to practice. Their veterans will be able to really sit down with you and dig into everything you need to know. Our introduction videos are a great start as is the below website which has lots of good introductory info as well as ways to find clubs local to you:

What about a big *ss sallette with build in paddening, a mail coif and a thick padded coif underneat that aswell. Also I got a question that more important if I would like to start getting into buhurt with less extreem levels of armor then full plate, but with full body padding and a more segmented level of plate. To be precies first layer is full body fabric armor, for the arms jackchains with at the upperarm mail sleeves a extra ellebow cup to protect the joints and gauntlets ofcourse, for the head I already told you what, for the body a brigendine over the gambeson, and for the legs a mail skirt, grieves for the lower legs and knee cups to protect my joints. Is this type of light weight armor exeptable? Everything that's steel will be over 2mm in thickness and the padding is pretty thick aswell. When I join I would like to take advantages of the fact that I'm a natural lichtweight that's overly strong for his weight class by having lighter armor that will allow me to be more mobile aswell. When I see people in buhurt it mostly seems to me that the rely a lot on raw strenght and the protection of there armor then anything else. I'm the type of guy that can take beating anyway sow I would like to rely on my pain resistance, speed and skill instead.
You can wear whatever you like as long as it fits into the basic rules. The ones we use can be found at Acwknights.com
As long as you meet minimum thicknesses for each described part of armor you can wear whatever you want on the outside of your body
@@saltlakecitycrusaders9811 Jezus man that's one insane list of rules. 😅 Also I'm not that sure about the thickness of each part exactly. I know everything should be on or over 1,2mm in thickness at the very least except maby my grieves and under that I'm bassicly wearing fully body padding. Full body padding as in even the leather gloves inside of my gauntlets are padded, sow yeh. 😅 I'm not sure how thick steel is exactly but the intire armour ended up weighing around 27 kilo's, sow yeh I'm pretty sure that should be plenty thick right? I ended up with a cuiras instead of brigedine and a mailskirt aswell though to armor up my center line better, but still 27 kilo's is already pretty heavy for a buhurt armor right? sow that means it must be thick enough.... 😅
What are the thoughts on a kettle helm with a bevor or are they even allowed?
I guess helm isn't the right word but I am not sure on the exact term. I have seen them called sallets and even just hat.
You would definitely want the bevor hard attached to the kettle helm. You would also need to make sure you followed all safety requirements. If done correctly it could have great visibility and breathing.
Kettlehelm? Good in my opinion, one caveat: the lip of the helm might get caught on axes, or invite illegal grabs, much like Sallets. Worth it imo
@@phillipmillerd7102 Attached, how would that work?
@@grantholmes5661 I'm thinking the kettlehelms with the very slopped rims.
hell yah
If you are wearing an older great helm, would one wear it as they did in medieval times, so one layer of gambeson, mail, and I forget the third type of coif, a smaller helm, and the great helm goes over it?
You can certainly do that, but weight is a big consideration in the sport and so generally we just have modern padding and a comfort layer within the helmets.
FASHION SOULS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Do you know the sizes of the helmets in this video? Its hard to get sizing references.
Helmets are custom made by blacksmiths and I do not have the measurements of these helmets in the video. The best thing you can do is hook up with a local team and get advice on blacksmiths they trust. Blacksmiths will send you what to measure and how so that you can get your own custom helmet.
Seems like the nasal helm would allow jaw strikes?
There is a bit of a face cage under the chainmail that adds protection
I highly doubt I'll get an answer here, but in the states where is the best place to look for helmets?
Is everyone wearing imported?
And if so how much of a pain in the ass is it to import these?
Most armor is custom made by blacksmiths in Europe, though there are some North American makers. If you want to get into armored combat then the best thing you can do is hook up with a team local to you and get their guidance.
They aren't too much of a pain to import, it just takes a while and shipping can get a little pricey.
Where do you guys get your gear?
We go into that in some of our other videos. Make sure to look at the video descriptions and email us directly if you want to talk more
Slccrusaders@gmail.com
How would i make sure the helmet would fit my head? Forgive my lack of knowledge but are all helmets one size fits all?
I'm also completely new, but from what I can tell the recommended armorers have inner circumference listed
Most helmets our team members get are custom made to fit their heads and the blacksmith will give instructions on measuring your head in different dimensions to get a good fit. We additionally recommend adding 1-3 cm to the circumference to give space for additional padding.
Your best bet is to hook up with a local team to get guidance from them on where to order from and see who they trust.
my biggest question is are those heavy strong jousting helmets allowed?
Absolutely you can have as big and heavy a helmet as you would like. It just needs to be accurate to the rest of your armor historically. But I will say any helmet above 25 lbs tends to be very unwieldy and makes it hard to fight
Frogmouth helmets!
19:49 that looks like clone trooper armor
I love this style of sport it's really badass I do wish though we could have a bit more fantasy long as it doesn't inflict safety. Example I love the 1992 Gary Oldman's dracula movie style Armor.
Why do you call the nasal helmet "grant"?
i should got to metal shop haha
Where can I buy these
I use Steel Mastery
@@StarsBarsAndCheese do yknow where i can get the helms in the vid tho?
@@ghostlyc646 I þink þey have a blacksmith do þeir helmets custom.
Hi!
Hi
Hello
G'day
So, I can't expect to represent the Alliance out of Warcraft when wearing a Barboot? But, that's the style of the typical human footman in the game...
[pout]
You guys look like cops. Anyway, what are the rules with regard to the Great Helms armor? Do you have to wear mail with a period coat of plates? I ask because I have seen Great Helms with Italian plate armor and anyone would know thats not possible.
Would anyone stop me from wearing my tilting gear? I have one of those armets that close in three places, and the pieces that go with it all existed, they just weren't all common finds. For example, my right shoulder has a besagew with just a guardbrace and spaulder while my left shoulder has a large pauldron covering the armpit so I can lift right right arm all the way up but my left is a little more restricted.
I ask because being restricted on the basis of historicity would give me a lot of grief based on time and money, and I havent put it all together yet so if I could confirm that.
No, wolf ribs helmet, lol
Yeah our team isn't big on them. We only have roughly 3 people in the state of Utah who use them
Enjoy my bellows sallet
This a sport wherein you best the shit outta each other with steel weapons........but your fuckin armour gotta all be from the same set, otherwise it don't count......that's so dumb.
From the very start of the video :
Real armor : yep.
Real athletes : no doubt.
Real weapons : Nnnope. Clearly not. Buhurt blunted weapons may be steel, but that doesn't make them real weapons at all, since they're, well, blunted. They may be steel simulators instead of nylon simulators, but simulators nonetheless.
they are real weapons. a razor sharp sword isn’t going to be much different from a blunted sword when used against full plate armour.
We can assure you any normal strike from the weapons we use would kill or maim an unarmored person in a single blow. Sharp edges do not define whether something is real. Hammers and maces were not sharp historically. But we can strike opponents countless times and our weapons will not break and can break through wood, bone, and steel. And they do just that on a regular basis
i mean just give me a rock and i can sharpen that fake weapon and it’ll kill
please invest in a proper microphone!
Gay, er, guy on the left sounds... Weird.
Drip is half the battle
