    Definitely interested. I've wanted to learn to use a sword for years. And the idea of hanging our with a bunch of other passionate people, learning to wear and use armor, use the weapons, and then put those skills to the test. Quite literally bashing eachother to pieces.. Well that's just dude 101 right there. Every man has somewhere in his blood.. the blood of warriors who came before him.

    The strike against the vambrace with the axe, even if the arm was allowed to react to the strike, would have broken the radius or ulna, possibly both. Tempered, the vambrace would have held up better, but it is a rather close fitting piece of armor, so it would not take that much deflection of the steel to transmit a heavy point load at right angles to the forearm bones, with a big hematoma or break as a result. Either way, you aren't fighting with that arm for the rest of the day/week/month, depending on your heal time.

    You can stress relieve stainless steels with heat and soaking to reduce work hardening, whether from the armorer's hammer or a foe's mace, axe or polearm. One of the problems with many stainless and other highly alloyed steels is that at temperatures lower than 60 to 70 degrees F, they will cleave catastrophically or brittle fracture. Plus, like the man said, working stainless and "spring" steels is much harder than low carbon steel, which adds time to the process. Time is money.

    So you guys just use the foam with no liners? Is the foam helmet padding from Medieval Extreme enough by itself or should we use more foam in between? I have some 1/2 inch thick air2gel from nadler in addition the foam liner, it makes the helmet snug but it might be a little TOO tight? The chin strap leather coming out from the side dig into my ears and can be quite annoying after a while. Even with the liner and the air2gel layer, I still feel some pressure when I smack the helmet with my palm. Not much but I do worry that it would multiply 10 fold when its an actual weapon. Its far from "Didn't feel a thing". So I feel like I'm doing something wrong when I have 2 of the best paddings combined and still feel the impacts. If I got rid of the liner, which I'm reluctant to do because It's a Andrey Galvenskiy and really big. I could probably put in 2-3 more layers of air2gel. That would make it really dense and even heavier. Hmmm, I need to find a balance.

      There is generally a liner in addition to the concussion padding used. The quality and safety of liners will vary from maker to maker, however we always recommend getting concussion padding of some sort into the helmet and concussion padding is in fact required by some leagues. One of our fighters removed the comfort liner from his helmet and had a very thin linen coif made to sew into his helmet. This allowed for quite a bit more concussion padding as well as an air space between the top of the liner and the padding.

    I initially started learning Longsword Fencing before I started gaining interest in Buhurt. (The local club has a HEMA class) I had also dabbled in Kendo in High School, but my strongest influence in hand-to-hand combat is Boxing. The guys at my local Buhurt group have me learning the sword and shield combo right now. I'm wondering if I should see about using the long two handled falchion.

    It seems the rigid time period is kind of a negative point to this sport. People these days see it as The Rule Of Cool, and quite honestly NOT one soul knows exactly what each and every warrior of the times actually wore other than what was written down and drawn. There could have been very many fighters in rather strange and eclectic gear. I fully understand getting a century picked out but for someone with strong ties to their ancestry, there is no reason why the couldn't accentuate their armor and garb. You think the vikings that went to Turkey kept their thick winter gear? Or did they adopt local customs and armor types that better suited their ways, and the area of which they find themselves fighting in? Only fools stick to one thing and refuse to adapt.

      @@irdorath356 LMAO yeah since alloy's outside of bronze were pretty much deadly. Hardened steel was best they get. I think even in modern times, people have issues with titanium outside of the pricing. It isn't a perfect metal by any degree.

    I highly doubt I'll get an answer here, but in the states where is the best place to look for helmets? Is everyone wearing imported? And if so how much of a pain in the ass is it to import these?

    • @saltlakecitycrusaders9811
      @saltlakecitycrusaders9811 10 місяців тому

      Most armor is custom made by blacksmiths in Europe, though there are some North American makers. If you want to get into armored combat then the best thing you can do is hook up with a team local to you and get their guidance. They aren't too much of a pain to import, it just takes a while and shipping can get a little pricey.

    • @saltlakecitycrusaders9811
      @saltlakecitycrusaders9811 10 місяців тому

      Most helmets our team members get are custom made to fit their heads and the blacksmith will give instructions on measuring your head in different dimensions to get a good fit. We additionally recommend adding 1-3 cm to the circumference to give space for additional padding. Your best bet is to hook up with a local team to get guidance from them on where to order from and see who they trust.

    You guys look like cops. Anyway, what are the rules with regard to the Great Helms armor? Do you have to wear mail with a period coat of plates? I ask because I have seen Great Helms with Italian plate armor and anyone would know thats not possible. Would anyone stop me from wearing my tilting gear? I have one of those armets that close in three places, and the pieces that go with it all existed, they just weren't all common finds. For example, my right shoulder has a besagew with just a guardbrace and spaulder while my left shoulder has a large pauldron covering the armpit so I can lift right right arm all the way up but my left is a little more restricted. I ask because being restricted on the basis of historicity would give me a lot of grief based on time and money, and I havent put it all together yet so if I could confirm that.
