WoW! I just fixed my daughter's '04 Explorer Sport Trac from this video. I didn't have a soldering iron that small, so I used a finishing nail heated up with a propane torch. Same exact diode as in this video. Thanks for posting this for us!
All I can say is thank you. The compass and temperature went out on me several years ago after I bought the truck. And today I decided to see if I couldn't get it working again, and ran across this video. I thought about just trying to find another one. On ebay or in a junk yard. But this simple trick fixed it.
Just fixed mine today thanks to your video! Not sure if I would've had to take it all apart, as I believe the unplugging & re-plugging it back in is what did the fix! Might try that before disassembling completely. 🤔
I just fixed the 2003 Ford F-150 that we got for my stepson with this method on the 510 chip at the end (closest to the center of the circuit card) and it worked! Thanks so much for making this video!
I wouldn't have believed it but after seeing this video, I tried it myself on a 2004 Pontiac Montana overhead display and it worked!! My display was also dim and all I did was re-melt every solder point that I could easily reach. It works now! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
I have to say thank you sir! It actually freaking worked! I just bought a 2001 f150. And did everything you said. And now thanks to your video. The temperature and compass work! Saved me a trip to the junk yard. Thanks again!
You are awesome ! As you actually showed what 98% of the problems with these compass. Keep up the great work and again thank you cuz alot of people have fixed the compass because of your vid...
Kinda longish video but Detailed so you know every step. When I took my console down a tiny black bit fell out w/ the number 510 on it. From watching this video I knew just what to do. My soldering looks like mini silver turds but my compass/ thermometer are working again. Thanks for this A-1 tutoral!
Hi my name is Tommy, I have that Ford F-150 now I went to the wrecking yard and bought a overhead council a I tried it immediately and did not work went back in and told him it doesn't work but I told him I'll take it anyway it was 5.00 so went found your video and I fixed both of them now I got an extra Thank you! Holy cow it actually worked! Bought my f150 and never seen it light up. Took me about half an hour to get everything done and boom! It works! Thank you!
Wow I ordered a new one and figured I would try this seeing's how it didn't work anyway It worked, I wish I hadn't ordered the new one now... Thank's...
I fixed it! I'll have to admit though, my first attempt to solder the first 510 resistor was U-G-L-Y. It came off too, completely. I thought it was over at that point but I childishly soldered it back. I only did the first 510 due to my horrible soldering job. Was afraid to touch anything else until I saw if that may have fixed it or killed it entirely. Plugged it back in and it WORKED. Thanks for the video and comments. $14.00 for soldering iron and solder from O'Reilly's Auto Parts and a few minutes - saved me $45 for a replacement.
had this problem. fixed it today using your video. one of the 510 resistors was missing. made jumper wire and soldered it in and viola its working again. thanks
Hey bud, thanks for making this video. Mine just went out 2 days ago in my 2001 Ford Exploder. With the help of your video, it was an easy fix. Thanks again.
Great job!!! Just an idea for you, grab a small zipper bag or small container for your solider gun and put some solder in with it! I was taught this by a professional organizer 👍
The overhead display stopped working over a year ago , but thanks to your video its back ! I did a resoder job on it and MUCH TO MY SUPRISE , IT WORKED !! Thank you.
Thank you. I took mine to the work bench and began to add solder to the 510s. One of them came loose and came off completely. I took my time to reset it and touched both the contacts front and bottom of all 5 of them. It wasn’t pretty but when I did a quick connect test with the display it worked. I was amazed. Worth the time to try this yourself even if your soldering skills aren’t that great. Thanks for the how to video.
I was looking for a video on a 99 dodge 2500 overhead trip computer fix, but couldnt find one. Mine doesnt light up at all. think I will do what you did. thanks for showing that little trick.
@@killrspeed00 mine is a 2000 Expedition, didn’t have the screw in the front like yours. Only one screw holds it in, it’s on top after opening the sunglasses compartment then the whole assembly pulls down. Has metal clips/tabs holding it up.
My temperature reading on mine reads a lot hotter than it actually is. Would that work on mine or is mine different from yours? Thanks for any help given.
No that would probably be a sensor issue. But remember it will read warmer if its sitting in the sun and should drop back down when driving. I've noticed all my vehicles with outside temp reading usually reads closer to the feel like then the ambient temperature.
@@killrspeed00 Thank you very much for responding and the advise. I will go straight to the sensor and see if that works. Again, thank you for your help.

Im sorry to hear that. Mine stopped working once a few weeks after I first did it so I got some more solder and got it real good and it hasn't stopped since. Unfortunately it could be a number of different things. Good luck.
@@killrspeed00 I actually went back in and decided to stop being dainty with it. Found the broken one with a pick, resoldered all 4 connectors on both. We are up and running like new! Again thanks!
I got lucky. After I took my module apart and got to the circuit board, I determined that I was missing one of the "510" resistors. At first I thought that maybe it failed, and blew up and there was nothing left. But, then I read a comment about someone having one fall out, and he tucked it into his cup holder, not knowing what it was. It was getting late, and I got my flash light out, and retraced my steps from the truck. And there it was, on the floor of my garage! Soldered it in, put the module back together, and YEA! IT WORKS! The real question is "What is the root cause of this failure?". Bad solder joint, causing resistance and heat melting the solder? Or a design issue that causes too much heat?
Did this still didnt work...got another one from the junkyard still didnt work checked all my fuses no fuses blown..whats the next step ..any1 could help a brutha out.
This issue seems common across Ford's SUVs and trucks. From research I did years ago it's due to overheating (most likely due to being mounted overhead where the roof receives a lot of heat from sunlight) and it weakens the solder joints at the pads. Essentially a poor design on Ford engineering.
Where can I get one of these resisters or whatever they are? I took mine off and that last 510 was completely gone. You can tell it was there. I don't where to even look for one at. Anybody please?
Cross your fingers, fixing mine tomorrow. Thanks for the video. Anyone know where to find a video about clearing a heat vent. I think a piece of foam broke off behind the vent, it doesn't open anymore so I can't get any heat into the cabin of the truck....not paying $1000+ dollars to have it fixed.
