In 2008 I started Jiu jitsu in Los Angeles in West Hollywood. I then met Choi at our academy and he was already a legend. His english was not great back then so he would just shake your hand and smile a lot. He would sit mat side before class and read a Korea Times newspaper then when class would begin he would fold up the paper, walk onto the mat & Choi Bar nearly everyone there. So lucky to be there for the early r&d days of the technique & so happy for the success of this technique which has been adopted wholeheartedly by the community.
It’s cool to actually see the inventor of this move. I’ve heard of this move for years, but never seen the person. Also, it’s cool how the bigger the sport get, the more innovation we’re likely to see.
He didn’t invent this, he may have popularised it, but he did not invent this armbar variation. You can see pics of this in Helio Gracie’s book “Gracie Jiu Jitsu” that was published in 2005 and this move was performed long before that as well. I’ve seen a pic in black and white of Helio doing this sub.
After thinking about it, this technique has the exact same finish as the spinning arm bar that's been around forever. The main difference is that instead of spinning toward the head and going belly down, you use leg leverage against the head to spin in the opposite direction to arrive at the same point. Very nice video thanks
remember choi training at rigans machados academy when he was a blue belt and he was pretty tough kid but he really didn't stay at one gym , he trained at various gyms from what i remember ....
Awesome stuff. Bernardo is is one of the MVPs of jiu-jitsu, doing a lot for the sport. Such a nice guy too. Met him in Oulu, Finland in 2013 I think. Seems like all the success hasn't changed him at all, which is a good thing.
Is the hyperextension of their elbow coming from your arms squeezing into your body, or your hips extending away? Another way to ask: Is the finish more like a razor armlock or a straight armbar?
He didn’t really create this though. You can see in Helio Gracie’s book - “Gracie Jiu Jitsu” on page 206 “Armlock (stepping over head)” in which the Grand Master shows this armbar. That book was published in 2005, I can tell you, it was performed long before that as well. EDIT: it is the reverse choibar, the armbar stepping over head, a traditional Jiu Jitsu arm bar
Man never ceases to amaze me how people think they’re entitled to make such statements, these are high level blackbelts, did it occur to you that maybe there’s something you’re not understanding about what they’re teaching you… 🤦♂️
Had you seen or heard about the Choi Bar before?
yes I learned it from Paul Schreiner and Yuta Shimada
Choi bar has been known for years, it has been a very effective arm/shoulder lock technique/ System. Love it

I used to train with him at Paragon in Santa Barbara like in 2009, nice guy
Oda had a lock similar to this in the 1930 s
2:32 from lasso
5:04 from butterfly
7:05 from bottom side control
I enjoyed watching Bernardo geek out
It’s impossible to not love Bernardo! He is like a kid in a candy store!
was it a huge honour for you, though?
Choi won Choi! He is the master of the biggest Jiu-jitsu organization in South Korea! Best of the best!

Love when you have the people who created/popularized moves/sequences! This was so dope
These Korean guys are so respectful
All asians are typically respectful. It’s how we’re raised 😅 we get a beating otherwise
@@jerryh2954 lol nah they are just respectful like many other people are
Thanks Choi, that is amazing! Bernardos happy energy is so good too
Proud of my fellow countryman.
I like his English. "Pierce your body with my legs."

Sinistro demais essa aula, simples e eficiente é disso que o jiu precisa!!!
Very simple, but nowadays very popular

Essa configuração com a perna por cima do pescoço me fez pensar que da para a aplicar o Choi Bar usando o Canto Choke como entrada.

My favorite technique there is thank you sir

Your hips would extend forward towards their elbow. It's a regular armbar but on your side.
Where’s the instruction on bjjfantatics?
great tutorial
Amazing!
Why are we waiting, we are suffocating, where is the instructional?
Could you just do an inverted triangle as soon as your leg gets over their head?
Rad!
Bernardo sir have you ever been to the middle east?
Is the opponent going to fill the shoulder or the arm?
Elbow
Bernardo was pierced three times 🤣
oss
Super cool
that guy is my uncle
It’s the elbow. The shoulder is the control, the pressure is on the elbow.
⚡🤙⚡
Wow!!! What an amazing technique! Thanks guys!
Okay guys 😅
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

ok boomer
@@choiboi23 I am not a boomer, actually I am thinking of the reverse choi bar. That was the traditional arm bar Helio preferred
😂😂😂😂@@choiboi23
its a variation of the arm bar.
That side control escape is, to be frank, pretty bullshit. The top guy will just arm triangle you if you even try that.
