They are so short sighted. The first video of yours that I watched was "What Makes this Song Great - More than a Feeling". I immediately went to iTunes and purchased the Boston album. Exposing people to great music is a win-win for everyone.

The great thing about that series is that no matter how many times you’ve heard a song, you didn’t hear what Rick hears. When he gets done pointing things out, you think: “Damn! He’s Right! That is a great song”. I’ve never been the biggest Boston fan, but I had the same reaction. Any artist or publisher should be honored to have a song covered in that series. Rick should have a video kiosk in The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame to remind people why they are there.

It looks like Steve Lukather and Elliot Easton hopped on Twitter *just* to add their support to Rick. Neither one of them seems to spend much time on Twitter (not compared to some other artists I follow!), but they made a point of showing up and commenting on this issue. 👍 👍 👍

TLDR: because Rick has 2 million subscribers, and the publishers already make money off his videos, he is able to reverse copyright strikes through pressure campaigns. Very glad for him, really, I'm glad to have his videos. But probably wouldn't work for someone with 200 subscribers instead of 2 million.

That’s the very important point and it’s a place of a privileged position of a massive UA-camr having the social clout to pressure these big labels for their specific case. Something that doesn’t improve or help the system as a whole or smaller content creators.

    • @Huntanor

There once was a time, where democracies understood, how important it is to give everyone the same power when it comes to legal issues. That's when they decided the legal path is "innocent until proven guilty". How the music industry managed to lever out this principle with approval by democracies is beyond me. In school we were taught about music by example. We listened to Jimi Hendrix' Star Spangled Banner and the teacher analyzed, why it's so great. Imagine a guy from a label stormed the class, took the record and told the teacher "first strike, on the third you're not allowed to do your job anymore". It's scary where the world heads to.

So glad this backfired so quickly.
The downside in general, of course, is that you have to know famous people and you need to be famous yourself for this to work. If I get a copyright strike on my tiny 3 vid channel, there is no way out of this for me, because I just don't have that kind of leverage. So I have to step around copyrighted material extremely carefully, and even then I can theoretically have my original content stolen by someone who then files a copyright claim _against me,_ just like it happened to Paul Davids. And I would be completely powerless to do anything about it.
The outrage remains: if it takes counting Lukather among your admirers for this to work, then the music industry is indeed fucked up beyond recognition.

I recently did a zoom video interview with two musicians who appeared on a classic album by Australian artist Chris Wilson, who passed away a couple of years ago. I got a copyright claim against the interview by Warner Music, even though there was NO MUSIC used in the interview whatsoever. I’m assuming the claim was made because I used the full title of the album and the artist’s name (Chris Wilson-Live at The Continental) in the clip title. I challenged the claim and won but it took 7 days for the decision to be made. I posted the clip on the day of the album release (it was actually a re-release of the album from 27 years ago) and anyone who works with social media knows that the first few days of posting is crucial, especially when it ties in with a release date. As far as I was concerned they robbed me of vital exposure time but to them it’s just another baseless claim. So thank you for fighting your copyright strikes on behalf of independent online publishers around the world.

I'm not trying to monitize them. I don't even make them publicly viewable! I just want to be able to give the link to friends and interested parties (as a kind of video audition or resume), but I get blocked every time. Yet UA-cam is FULL of cover videos by other people, and channels where you can listen to (or download) the original song (or the entire album!), and UA-cam leaves them alone.

It's likely not even the labels at this point doing this. It's rights holders of all stripes that have purchased the portfolios long ago. The artists likely don't see a dime of this, or if they do, it goes right back out the door to pay the person who helped file the claim in the first place. It's lawyers and VPs making the money, not the artists. If it was the artists actually making money off this, nobody would even bat an eye.

He just admitted because the system he helped them create is broken, you should make some famous or rich friends in order to TEACH MUSIC ONLINE.
Not only did not stand up for content creation or free speech or actual copyright law, HE HELPED them to create the mechanisms to censor and ban everyone at will, and it came back to haunt even him in the end.

      @ghost-user559 3 роки тому

@@Vivi_9 I understand that with the current corruption of the law and illegal ai strikes, that what you are saying becomes necessary now.
But think about what you really just said, a music teacher has to SELL MERCH to make a legitimate income off of their life skill set?
That isn’t music lessons, that’s entrepreneurship. That’s an entirely separate set of skills such as online marketing, branding, graphic design, social media outreach, videography and editing (online course). You are essentially saying “you need several other careers with entirely separate skillsets to follow your one lifelong career”. Isn’t that absolutely ludicrous for average people?
According to the law an old man with no abilities besides his honed instrumental ability should be able to simply upload and share his skills, AND make a living with his skill set.
You are saying that a person has to do everything EXCEPT that actual skill of music lessons to actually make money due to the unlawful abuse of automatic systems used to “enforce copyright infringement”.
The issue is the law allows an individual to use a certain number of consecutive measures of music without penalty or permission, and a music teacher can use musical examples (within reason) without infringing upon rights holders as this is fair use. Furthermore a music lessons IS transformative use of copyrighted content and fully capable of being used as a source of income for the TEACHER, not the rights holders of the brief snippets of music used within legal boundaries for examples.
You are saying that someone has to be MORE than a music teacher to actually make an income AS a music teacher. That is not legal or fair. That is literally choosing whether or not another human has value and is allowed to live based on the value that the ai gives them.
The algorithms used to automatically flag copyrighted content are not legal instruments, nor are the social media programmers judges or governments with any legal authority.
To make an automated system that inherently violates fair use and actual copyright allowances and prevents ordinary people with valuable skills from sharing them by AUTOMATICALLY stealing their revenue without any legal process or representation is absolutely unlawful and utterly corrupt.
If someone’s grandfather wants to turn on a webcam and tech you how to play along to an old 45 record, he shouldn’t have to be a social media upsell guru with a Shopify account and product placement to teach future generations his skills and enhance his income while doing so.
The ai that runs these social media networks violate the very laws of the country they operate within. They have no legitimate reason to blanket censor any and all “copyrighted content” because they are not a legal institution.
Most people (with the exception of piracy and abuse) are considered fair use AND transformative, and under the law this platform has therefore stolen billions if not trillions from ordinary citizens, while paying off the labels, publishers, and film studios to ABUSE the law.
Just because no one can afford to stand up for themselves and stop them does not make what they are doing legal or moral. It is purely a digital mafia, syphoning money from average content creators who do not even realize they are fully within their legal rights. They take those peoples money and still post ads on their content (which they already have appropriated for bogus violations) therefore doubling the theft of income.
I agree with you, smart people can do ten other things besides their skill set and invest years honing a multitude of additional skills.
By definition that is not making money actually pursuing their skill set, while it is legally fully within their rights to do so.

But I'm thinking a non-musician will get a completely new perspective on music by listening to Rick's commentary. The musicians should be grateful that their "forgotten" music is being highlighted. Cars music and Simon and Garfunkel are not tunes you hear on the radio today and exposing some of this great music to the next generation who would otherwise never hear it should be looked at with a wider scope rather than striking someone for pointing out what makes a song great. Case and point...my son is 21 years old and one day I was playing Jethro Tull and he was blown away. He asked me who I was listening to and I told him. The next thing I know is he is online ordering cds and vinyl box sets of Jethro Tull. So Jethro Tull just got another sale because someone helped school the next generation of what great music really is. Bottom line is....Rick does a huge service to not only his channel and fan base but to all of the artists he spotlights on his channel and they should all be grateful that there are people out there who still promote their music. Keep up the fight and keep doing what you are doing.

The thing is, UA-cam is (partially falsely) claiming to be just a public platform as opposed to a publisher. What that means is, that if you want to argue Fair Use for any content, you have to go to a court or directly talk to the person that holds the copyrights --- NOT UA-cam. UA-cam is only providing a simple (and junky) interface for disputing copyright strikes. UA-cam is smartly and logically ditching the responsibility for the content of its users (not always the case and let's not pretend they are impartial or unbiased in any way). After all it's a private business operation. I'm not saying it is morally justified or fair, but if you don't agree, create your own platform or join a different one - you get the idea. In that light, I'd say that the fact that you can get 3 copyright strikes and only then you get banned is pretty generous. I know, the world is fucked up, but that's how it is.

The sad thing is, I’m sure there’s a number of UA-camrs under 1M that don’t have the contacts for the labels or artists to care when they’re wrongly given a strike. Seen so many videos from smaller channels talking about how UA-cam have screwed them.

It makes sense, they block everyone who is possibly miss using their music, (paint everyone with the same brush) but once a content creator like you is brought to their attention and they see what you’re doing is beneficial to them, they rectify the problem.
It’s probably impossible for them to watch every video they block.
