Because UA-cam arbitrarily picks and chooses who they enforce their rules upon based on how much of a following they have. The only things they care about are if their bottom line or their public image is affected, so that's why they always play nice with large youtubers who have the agency to fight back, while simultaneously completely ignoring anyone who isn't popular and leaving them to rot with recourse.

In all of my life I will never understand the taking down of content that is essentially free advertising for the copyrighted thing. Was it back in the early 2000s that Warner took down hundreds of Star Trek fan sites because they felt everyone should only go through them? Same with Nintendo. It's like if I ran a small café and someone in the area was putting little posters up saying "Go to this place, I've been and it's it's great! Look, here's what they have!" and then I went around tearing them all down while fuming.
And, I'm sorry to say, this is why I now use an adblocker on UA-cam because 9 times out of 10 I'll be shown an advert for a content creator that I like and want to support and they won't see penny one of that money.

I remember a time in history where musicians would have killed for a mere mention on a platform like yours, much less highlighted. I can’t think of a video of yours that was negative, except about blockers.
You’ve introduced me to some amazing music that I would have been unlikely to be exposed to otherwise. For any band to be identified as a blocker by you pretty much makes me DONE with them. And some of them are bands I’ve loved for decades, but to hell with them, they can slide into obscurity and I’ll replace them with the great music by people that appreciate the exposure you bring to them.

I think the most frustrating thing with dealing with anything online is the nameless, faceless, soul-less algorithms is the fact that very often, one doesn't know what the reason for being demonetized, videos, posts taken down, is that there is no human element to be able to reason with. You can't talk to anyone to find any information, you can't reason with anyone to explain your intent, nothing.

Rick, having missed seeing it myself: is there something in your original Oasis video that contains video footage that is either the property of Sony Pictures or BBC Studios? Merlin Entertainments do not appear to have any direct connection to any music publishers, and it appears Noel Gallagher at least is still contracted to Sony/ATV (Sony Music) Publishing, so as far as the various music rights are concerned, you should not have had a problem (as evidenced by your other Oasis videos not being blocked). Liam Gallagher's music publishing deal is with Warner/Chappell, so not likely to be relevant, but also see my following paragraphs below...
Merlin have IP relationships with the aforementioned Sony Pictures and BBC Studios, as well as Marvel, LucasFilm, DreamWorks, Lego, and Entertainment One, while also being primarily involved historically with theme parks. Most pertinently, they are the company behind Madame Tussauds, the celebrity waxworks museums. Liam Gallagher, at one point in the early 2000s, had in a public poll on the matter the third-most-hated-character waxwork (behind Hitler and Slobodan Milosevic, and ahead of Saddam Hussein, wtf!?).
Is it thus plausible that you've unintentionally posted a picture of Liam, in your original video, that is in fact his Madame Tussauds waxwork, leading Merlin to have an IP content claim? It might sound like a far-fetched theory, but as you repeatedly note on this fine channel, most of the copyright nonsense that goes on here on UA-cam, stuff that would be far-fetched in a world composed only of rational actors, is instead ubiquitous and difficult to navigate around.

Rick did a video about blockers a while back saying how new publissity on an old song can revitalise its sales and make the owner money, so it is self defeating.

I will never understand a law system/tradition where artists don't own their work and have the last say on everything no matter if they sold the rights of use/publish. I would even go as far as to call such a law system barbaric.

Hey Rick it seems to be that every UA-cam video that contains a part of slide away gets taken down for copyright for some unknown reason which is a shame as it’s such a great song that I’d personally love to hear your insight on

    • Steven Rix
      Steven Rix 5 днів тому

Was that the reason? Pathetic, as you must be entitled to play a short snippet of a song under fair use, even a classic like Slide Away. That said, the original video is now unblocked so I could watch it. To be honest, there were quite long segments of each song being played so I am not surprised it ran into trouble. That said, Oasis is an “old” band that should be grateful for the PR from being featured like this, which could get it a few more Spotify streams for absolutely zero effort - if someone actually thinks about it…

  • Dave79
    Dave79 10 днів тому +3

I can almost guarantee its not from the Oasis camp. Noel Gallagher has most control, and he has said on record "You can go out and pirate my songs, bootleg them, I do not give a fuck. The more people listening to Oasis the better, paying or not."

Rick, I haven't seen your video but, going waaaayyy back, when I first heard an Oasis song it just seemed so derivative of the Beatles sound and aura that I found it difficult to believe that they were not simply coining income on the back of the Lennon sound.
I have, so far, not heard any output that would seriously contradict that view, though 5 pr more decades have passed.
I have no idea what you may have said in the original video but, perhaps, the original material is so lacking in originality that no video could be justified.

Rick im loyal to you as a youtuber and as someone who teaches me so much about music, from the first video ive ever seen made by you years ago. I only can dream and wish that other youtubers who make educational content cared as much you do about the state of music and the future of music and our young musicians today who hope to be successful like u are. I wish i had known you and had you as an inspiration when i was younger and discovering my musical tastes, my voice, and talents ...i think you would've been an excellent influence on me and taught me to have a more open mind and definitely given me more confidence. I learned piano, took voice lessons, and had my turn singing in a variety of bands but a lot of times didnt have the confidence to speak my own opinion or i would let others push me around when i was doing 99% of the work or giving 100% of my time and my effort and my committment and my heart and soul only to be betrayed by people who were only in it for the money and abandonded projects i was very loyal to. I know even if i couldnt have talked to you your advice wouldve meant so much and taught me about professionalism and patience. I love u and your passion and your so-called"rants" to me, just are human ; you put a lot of work into your videos and having them get blocked would make me angry too- theres really no good reason for it and someday the higher-ups or whoever is making these wrong decisions will regret it. You'll always have a fan and supporter in me and im sure im just one of many but maybe my words will mean something to you at the end of the day and you'll read this comment and it'll stick with you and you'll remember my words. I eventually found my place in life as a writer but my passion for music lives on in everything i do and wouldve still been a career path for me if i had the chance. I have songs ive written on cd that just sit on a shelf and i hope to make something of them. Maybe u can do a video about how to get music youve written out to a producer i had the chance years ago to go to a studio and have a guy make a mixtape for me but my parents didnt want to pay the money and thought it was a scam so i lost my chance. 🥲anyway, youre the best...dont let blockers make u feel any different. Its people like me who know what loving music is really about and you give your whole heart❤ and the world is so much better bc of you and your caring soul. Xoxox.

Hey Rick, starting music in college and I had an accidental course on major scales. Didn’t do very good 😂, I know the circle of 5ths and use that to identify what notes are flat in a flat major scale but I can’t seem to figure out how sharps work. Wondering if you can make a video explaining accidentals and how to know which notes the accidentals go on very quickly without needing to try and visualize anything in my head because that takes too long.

About school music programs: even back in 1977 the music program I was a part of raised funds. Ticket sales from evening concerts, performing at conventions and selling albums was what it took to perform and win at the Reno Jazz Festival and perform at Disneyland. I would guess that our budget was $50k to $60k and that was 45 years ago.

What I find really funny is I could stand on any street corner (where permitted) and play dozens of classic, copyright protected songs, day in day out, for whatever amount of money a good busker could earn, literally for years, and never once be bothered (by the copyright holders).

    • Chris Plummer
Chris Plummer 10 днів тому +1

Because it's easier for the record companies to sit in their offices and scan the internet for copyright infringement. Then it is to go around the country from city to city to stop buskers. technically if an ascap or bmi guy wanted to he could go around and look for people

Totally true. You could also play and teach these songs for years and make some decent money, never bothered by the gatekeepers. It all comes down to money. It would cost too much to go after a busker or teacher in attorney fees. On the internet, the gatekeepers get the money before you see it. Pretty sweet setup for them.

These artists or record companies really need to get with the times. You open up young people to music that they may go and check out and ultimately invest money into, or at least help steaming views. Jimi Hendrix suffers greatly because of this (like you mentioned in another video once).

Not surprising honestly. I had a t-shirt design up on a website, that said “mirage,” in a font similar to the font of the Oasis logo (not the same font). Ended up getting a takedown notice on it. They apparently also have a claim to a font similar to theirs as well as another word. It’s a bit ridiculous.

Rick, SUGGESTION: As a part of your music education catalog of YT videos, I think an hour or two discussion with a copyright/1st Amendment attorney that can educate us all on the ins and out of copyright law and illuminate how streaming and YT and other things work. Bet you're working musicians and UA-camr Beatoids would appreciate it. Especially since there are so many who would also know how to protect their work.
Many, many years ago my kid was in middle school and their jazz band played Thieves in the Temple... Prince's peeps took it down from YT and wouldn't let it go back up. lol. It didn't effect my livelihood, but come on.😆

I've never liked Oasis - every time I turn my attention to them I've always had the feeling they're truly narcissistic attention seekers (a-holes). Although their song writing may be technically top notch, the singing sounds too whiny for me and their presentation (the look in their face, their clothes, mannerisms, etc) just turns me away...I can't understand how people can like them.
