    If your native soil is hardpan, clay is easy to dig up, but the soil holds too little water for good plant growth, and organic material just tends to float away on the wind. Mixing clay waste with sand and either peat moss or sawdust will make a suitable growing medium for plants on its own. In the drier parts sand is also generally easy to come by, and the mixture of clay and sand will hold the organics together and allow roots to take hold, beginning the process of soil rejuvenation.
    P.S.: Aquarium trick, get a length of plastic hose and use it as a siphon to drain water from the top of a bucket without disturbing the bottom layer by tipping the bucket. Fill the hose with tap water and cover the end with a finger to start it, unless you like the flavor of delicious clay water of course.

      If you are throwing into the landfill, why not throw outside. Clay is earth, but the 2 bags you wrap it in are toxic. Makes no sense. Just dump it outside. Make bricks or something from it to line the driveway or garden. Loose the plastic bags.😮

    Use a flocculant separator called SlurrySep. You can dewater and filter water in only a few minutes. Acid in the blend will kill mold.

    ahh! thank you for sharing! i've been graduated out of my ceramics degree since 2 years ago and despite wanting to start an at-home pottery studio, the water waste (and dust too i guess) always puts me off--especially since i was so used to having a professional well-equipped studio in school. this video just gave me confidence and reassurement to finally start!

    This is SOOOOO IMPORTANT!! I wish so badly I had known this. I didn’t know this for a long time and thankfully found out before any problems occurred. I now have a clay sink trap but I still prewash everything.
    Always let the clay water settle overnight. If you pour really slowly the clay won’t agitate and you get less clay in your sink.

      What kind of clay sink trap do you have? Is it like the gleco trap system or something else?

    An unglazed/terracotta vessel might be a good method of drying slip... Was thinking this may be a nice sort of way to "make your own tools" and avoid having to spend a lot of money/use plastic tools. I have seen people use the porous nature of unglazed ceramics for everything from purifying water/filtration, to isolating iron heavy sand/silt from water.

    There is very useful advice in the video, but I don't recommend burying the clay outdoors, as many plants don't thrive well in that kind of soil and it doesn't provide oxygen well for the roots of the plant. But small amounts may be harmless and there are also plants, who do thrive in soil with clay well.

    Thank you so much for this! I just had one question about how to clean the clothes used while working with clay. Lately I’ve been rinsing them first to release the clay and then throwing in the washing machine… because I’m guessing throwing straight into the washing machine can also become clogged with clay material. BTW I’m only doing pottery from my home in a small unit! Thank you again - I have 2 buckets sitting with mould in that I wasn’t too sure where or how to dispose of it! :)

    Hey Mia, I was wondering what your thoughts would be on using coffee filters for the clay water? I just started experimenting with clay at home and have about two glasses of dirty water after cleaning up my tools and table (for extra pieces of clay and thick slip I usually put them directly into another container to reuse). At the end of a making session I usually poor the water out in a coffee filter. The clay bits stay in the filter that I throw in the garbage and the filtered water I poor down the sewer. I don't really have a place to keep containers like you do. Would you say this is an okay way to dispose of it at home? By the way thank you very much for all the advice and information you share, it is so helpful. Glad I found you ^-^

      I think that works! I haven't tried it myself, but I used to filter clay water through fabric, so I think it would work similarly. :)

    I just have a big bucket that I wash all my clay stuff in. I let everything settle and once there is enough sediment I pour off the water and put the slib on a plaster slab to recycled

    Hello, I am setting up a home/club studio and am considering buying the Botz sedimentation tank, like yours. Does the paint on the painted metal surface ever flake off? There is a plastic Rhode sed tank I am also considering. The Botz seems sturdier but I just want to check if the paint flecks off before I decide. Thanks heaps for your feedback, if you're able :)

    • @Angeliqueceramique
      @Angeliqueceramique 3 роки тому +5

      When your done and got the most washed of your hands in the dirty water and you you scrub the clay under your nails,then yeah you can do that. Bud not whole lots of clay because it can build up in the pipes
