great video. as always! your videos don´t just show the flashy fun parts of clay working, but all the essentials and important things, that other channels don´t tend to go into. love it!soooo useful.
Love this video. Thank you so much. I live in an apartment and I don't even have a balcony. I stopped using my wheel as often because of the clay water
Thanks for the great video on clay water mgmt! As a newbie potter, I’ve been puzzled about this topic for my new home studio. I thought a siphon might help and your recommendation of the mega syringe is the perfect solution (no pun intended). Love your channel and teaching style!
Marie, love your videos - they are EXACTLY what I need as a beginner...Question: How do you make / get the bisque bowl...did you make this? Anything special?
Thank you. Welcome to the wonderful world of crafting pottery. I just put the slab of clay over a big bowl. Make sure you place plastic on the bowl or mold to get the clay off the bowl. Because when it starts to dry the clay will start to shrink and stick to the bowl. It doesn't have to be perfect because I just use them to dry out the clay. Any more questions, feel free to ask.
Hello I also have a question how do you wash your dirty pottery laundry? I don't have a trap and I've been washing them out with a garden hose. And hanging them on my clothes line.
Any advice on how to wash your wheel throwing or handbuilding cloths . I used to use 8 buckets of water to wash them before I put them in the washing machine. It was time consuming, so I started to just throwing them out . I live in an apartment building and I don't even have a balcony, but I don't want to give up on ceramic 😃
I do the same thing with my wheel water as I do with my floor water; just take the extra water off the top and let the clay dry out. I let my clothes soak, so I don't have to use so many buckets. Then just let the clay settle also. If possible you could get a drain trap and wash your clothes in that sink. I hope this helped. I would not want you to have to give up Ceramics.
Thank you. I put a touch of vinegar in the water and reuse it or I throw outside. I don't pour it down the drain because I don't have a sink trap and even though the water is clear it still may contain clay particles. Now of course it would take many years to clog the pipes but I just stay on the safe side. 😊
Fantastic video. I lookt in youtube for a long time for a video like this,Their are none. Glad one finaly exist. Is very importent. Greate vid. Catcha l8r.
This was such a useful informative video thank you! I was wondering what the process would be for glaze water and how to dispose of that safely. I'm just in the process of setting up my own home studio and I'm trying to plan for everything :) thank you 😊
Hi Liana, That is wonderful. I have a post on that. Here is the link for you. potterycrafters.com/properly-disposing-of-and-recycling-pottery-glazes/ Enjoy your new studio. 😊
Hi. Once you have remove the water with your seringe, can you put that water in the drain or is it still not recommanded for the pipes? By the way, for my part, I use a flexible tube and remove thé water part by gravity. Another trick! Thank you
You're welcome emilyyyn That is a very good question. You can strain it later if you like. Whichever way works best for you. This way, I can get any debris out of the clay right away. I can take the clay out for slip or let it dry out without having to strain it later. 😊
Just a question, Could I just use a double pillowcase, strain the water and hang the case like you did in your recycle video? What is the benefit of allowing the clay to dry first?
Hi Merry. Yes you can but because the clay particles are so tiny you still can't let that water go down your drain. The great benefit to letting the clay dry first is that the water absorbs faster and more evenly into bone dry clay. You can test it out your self to see the difference. 😊
That is a good question. I just throw that water outside because I don't recycle that clay. If you can't throw it outside, then Yes, take the water out and let the dirty clay water dry out and throw it away. 😊
Great question. Yes you can. It may smell a bit moldy but that's ok because all clay contains mold. If it bothers you just add a little vinegar to the water. Some potters will use bleach but I prefer vinegar.
hii can i message you privately, I want to show you what i am dealing with and would love your help. it's the water i have too much of, it's the clay that's wet and I am still unsure what to do to revive it to normal clay
I really don't think you should pour your clay water on the ground if your area isn't where you got the clay from - it can have a negative impact on the ecosystem
That is a great point! That is why you should know your clay and be aware of your environment. I live on the side of a mountain and think of all the new houses being built up here and the damage we are doing to our environment and echo system. That's another reason why I save all my clay. 😊
You’re the best teacher ever. Thank you so much. ❤
Thank you! I am glad I can help you on your pottery crafting journey 👍
Thank you for sharing! This was just what I needed for my tiny apartment studio 😊
That is Excellent Melina!! Glad It was helpful. 😊

Thanks for a great video,I'll be doing my clay and water disposal that way.
You're welcome Heidi. Glad it was helpful! Something we don't want to mess with but important 😊
Hello I also have a question how do you wash your dirty pottery laundry? I don't have a trap and I've been washing them out with a garden hose. And hanging them on my clothes line.
Yes, Heidi. Very smart! That is exactly what I do with my pottery apron. I wash my rags in a bucket. Never in the washer. 👍😊
Great video! I'll be incorporating some of these methods in my small home studio, thank you so much!!
Thank you! That is GREAT to hear.

Are sink traps expensive? Like are we taking hundreds or thousands 🤔
No, they are only around a $100 here is the link for you to check it out. geni.us/Ju9KG7 👍😊
Great video!! What do you do with the syringed water? Can it go down the drain?
Thank you. I put a touch of vinegar in the water and reuse it or I throw outside. I don't pour it down the drain because I don't have a sink trap and even though the water is clear it still may contain clay particles. I use a condiment bottle for slip it squeezes out easy
That's a good idea. Thanks for sharing 😊
Thank you for the tips!
Happy to help!

Only if the water is crystal clear. Yes you can! That is a good idea. Thank you so much for sharing. 😊
@@PotteryCrafters thanks to you!
Hi! Thanks for this video. I was wondering why you strain the clay water before waiting for the clay/water to separate? Is this a necessary step?
You're welcome emilyyyn That is a very good question. You can strain it later if you like. Whichever way works best for you. This way, I can get any debris out of the clay right away. I can take the clay out for slip or let it dry out without having to strain it later. 😊

do u syringe out the extra water from the mop water bucket too? before leaving it to dry?
That is a good question. I just throw that water outside because I don't recycle that clay. If you can't throw it outside, then Yes, take the water out and let the dirty clay water dry out and throw it away. 😊
Can´t you use a child´s waterpistool instead of a great seringe?
That's a good idea. Thanks!
What about glaze water?
Good question. I treat it the same as clay because it does contain a bit of clay and over time may effect your pipes. 😊
Can you just reuse that water that you suck out of the bucket as wetting water again while you're throwing?
Great question. Yes you can. It may smell a bit moldy but that's ok because all clay contains mold. If it bothers you just add a little vinegar to the water. Some potters will use bleach but I prefer vinegar.
