Hogwarts Legacy is a 2023 action role-playing game developed by Avalanche Software and published by Warner Bros. Games under its Portkey Games label. The game, part of the Wizarding World franchise, takes place in the late 1800s, a century prior to the events chronicled in the Harry Potter novels. The player controls a student enrolled in the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry who learns to wield an array of magical abilities and objects. With the assistance of fellow students and professors, the protagonist embarks on a journey to unearth an ancient secret concealed within the wizarding world.
Following their acquisition by Warner Bros. in 2017, Hogwarts Legacy marks the first release from Avalanche unrelated to Disney Interactive Studios and its products. The game's development commenced in 2018, while pre-release gameplay footage was leaked onto the internet in the same year. The storyline was crafted to unfold in a period untouched by established Wizarding World characters, offering players the opportunity to immerse themselves in their own distinct universe. Avalanche Software emphasised that while their rendition of Hogwarts is their own interpretation, it had been carefully designed to maintain a sense of familiarity and recognition.
When first officially announced in 2020, the game garnered significant anticipation. Following some delays, it was released on 10 February 2023 for PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S and on 5 May 2023 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. It is scheduled for release on Nintendo Switch in November 2023. The early-access period of Hogwarts Legacy resulted in record-breaking viewership on streaming platform Twitch, making it the most-watched single-player game of all time on the platform.
Within two weeks after its launch, the game sold more than 12 million copies and generated $850 million in global sales revenue. As of 5 May 2023, revenue crossed $1 billion and 15 million copies were sold globally. Hogwarts Legacy received generally favourable reviews from critics, with praise for its combat, world design, characters, and faithfulness to the source material, but criticism for its technical problems and lack of innovation as an open-world game.

This game was a really cool wizard game, but an awful student game. I still think they should divide this into two different series: one that's like Fable where you play as a badass wizard and another that's like Bully/Persona with a singular focus on the school and its immediate surroundings.

I imagine (or hope) that given time the modding scene will reach Skyrim levels and people will emphasise the school element and add new systems and so on to be more of a student. I've already seen someone gave all the NPC's proper schedules which gives the castle more life, and that was a great mod for Skyrim too. The more "immersive" mods that come out for Hogwarts, the better.

I honestly prefer the LEGO Harry Potter approach, which is more like the older HP games, where you alternate missions and actual lessons. Hogwarts Legacy made it a little weird with the sorta-open-world and how you were taught spells so sneakily instead of the way they show it in the movies.

Honestly, a sequel could get by just by fleshing out the school life (and ramping up the secrets to find). More classes, more student interactions, house point system, and Quidditch.
Additionally, having a Year 6 or Year 7 student is really convenient for having the Tri Wizard Tournament - which also provides the opportunity to just have a different school entirely for the game.

That would be epic. Somewhat would depend on how much of a world you get. You'd need full Ministry of Magic and Diagon Alley at minimum (maybe St. Mungo's too), and would probably benefit from building out an open world London to some degree. But you'd probably need some English countryside locations or a couple of wizarding communities like Godric's Hollow as well. I also think down the line, they could do something like this but with Beauxbatons or Ilvermorny to get the chance to create a full build of another wizarding school and tell a story in that world that would have some familiarity to the overall wizarding world but in a castle that we have less firm expectations on. That could be really fun as well.

Now that this game made so much money and they realize it’s not that hard to just give us what we want and we will pay. The sequel will hopefully be great. this^^ It felt god dammed awful to have the entire talent system unlock for me at a level where i had like 15+ point to apply straight off the bat. Thats not RPG, thats not "building a character throughout the story" thats just dumping the entire talent system on your lap halfway through a game. Also, lets stop it with this "faux rpg" thing where "you can equip gear, therefore its rpg right?" no, its just a time sync to get you to open the menu every 30 seconds becuase this "random generic item" has 2 more "random generic points" that make it 2% stronger. I got a legendary item and was excited......aaaaand its gone 10 minutes later because its obsolete. Whats wrong with finding a rare powerful item and it..ohh...i dunno....actually being rare and powerfull. I dont remember harry throwing his cloak into a rubbish bin 10 minutes later because he got one wich was 1% more invisible-er. I wanna have items that i've had with me throughout the game, that adds attachment to these things. Modern "faux" rpg's are all about encapsulating absolutely no aspects of role playing as a character. This is my special legendary thing, i aquired through difficult means. Give it some significance, or just get rid of the system and make it all about cosmetics only and stop calling it an RPG. Just be truthfull and call it an Adventure game, there's nothing wrong it that. But there is someone wrong with ruining the name of "RPG games"

The open world in legacy felt like if Rocksteady had attempted Arkham Knight as their first game or fromsoft trying Elden ring as their debut. It was so empty, tacked on and unnecessary.

Like there's only one position on the team worth playing and that's Seeker. You could score a hundred times as one of the other players, but as soon as the other team gets the snitch, you lose.
This is what comes from where the sport was devised without a lot of real thought by the author. Makes for a good story where the hero, Harry, is the seeker. But to actually play it, like a proper game? It's a waste of time if you're not the seeker.

SO many cool places that HL didn't visit. How cool would it be to walk around Diagon Alley or the Ministry of Magic? Those two places right there alone give the devs tons of stuff to work with. What if the story is your character has graduated at Hogwarts and now works as whatever role you choose at the beginning of the game (options like being an auror, allowing you to be an evil Death Eater type if you want, or even being someone who focuses on magical beasts and plants, etc.). Throw in a good portion of the game taking place at Hogwarts, add Diagon and the Ministry, maybe even add parts of London. Plenty of really good RPG options available for the sequel. I mean, how awesome would it be to be able to choose your wizarding job and play through the story in that role? That would be a really fresh way to go while still maintaining the elements from the first game that we all loved. I'm already really excited for that sequel. Nintendo did it with Hyrule in Tears of the Kingdom. Same setting, different set of problems, but feels even better the second time around. They could set it right after the final battle, have us rebuild the school, and thus explore other areas (even schools) to source resources, allies, etc.

Thanks man, I'm going to play this game over again seasonally. Play it up to the end of the fall/Halloween chapter then take a break and play the next winter chapter at Christmas, then the final spring chapter in spring. I still think it lacks a lot of things it should have had, but like you said it is a very quaint, immersive, relaxing, nostalgic, and classy game that does deserve more than being permanently forgotten after 1 first playthrough. Thank you for convincing me to give it another go just for seasonal atmosphere.

I feel it's almost inevitable that the sequel will have quidditch, that seemed to be the loudest complaint when it came to content. I'm hoping that they add in lesson plans for every class based out of the library for more "extracurriculars", and maybe imagine a few more magically sealed chambers like there were in Sorcerer's Stone that have been disused/hidden/disguised/enchanted.

Honestly the biggest problem for me was loot. Random loot all over the place, pretty ugly gear and It's just like 3 points here, 3 points there difference.
I need better rewards and better puzzles.
Caves were really disappointing, every cave is just, enter, go 2 minutes forward, get a random item, go out.
They could have done some pretty amazing stuff with all the spells, make various compelling puzzles instead of just, use leviosa on this box to move it here and that's it.

You know how they could make a sequel be just as interesting while remaining in the Hogwarts main map?
Triwizard Tournament. More students from abroad, more facilities being brought as "mobile" houses like the Beauxbattons carriage and the Russian wizards ship, and most importantly, three different massive trials that could have crazy story beats within.
Would also be cool to see a Triwizard Tournament in the old days, when they happened to be even more dangerous than what we've already seen.

I loved this game. It was nowhere near perfect but it did some key things so well, obviously the castle. I mean MY GOD, fantasy come true. Just unbelievable. And a sequel sounds absolutely wonderful to me. I have no idea how they could create the wonder of exploring hogwarts castle again but for me they don't have to. Yes, the star of this game, atleast for me was the castle and the exporation of it. So that itch has kindoff been satisfied for me. What i would want out of the sequel is for them to focus not on creating a new wonderful castle but on more missions focused on other major locations. Loved the little mission in azkaban, it was awesome and I want more of it. Furthermore, i would love if the classes themselves became more of a focus. Really getting to live that student life. Like choosing maybe your own focus, like herbology, or beasts, or ofcourse defense against the dark arts. So that you can specialise and really be the student you wanna be and make the classes more detailed and interesting instead of a short game or basically just learning a new spell and thats it. Whatever they have planned, I am here for it.

For some next game, i wish we could play a character that has a real story arc and, well, character. I know its a RPG and we're suppose to give our character its traits but since the dialogues or actions have no impact on the story it doesn't really work.
In the Witcher 3 for exemple, things Geraly says has impact and there's no obvious right or wrong answer, just where you want your story to go. And no matter what you respond, his answer will be witty and sassy and i love it every time so I grew fond of the character (that and the storytelling which is amazing).
Our character in Hogwart Legacy doesn't have any of that. You can make them nice or mean but the choice is very obvious and it has no impact except to hear student you've been mean to talking crap about you in the hallways. And our character also feels so out of their own story for me. We don't know anything about them, where they came from, if they even have relatives or had friends before coming to Hogwarts. What do they love ? Fear ? Want in life ? It's very hard to get attached to your own character. And it feels like they just stumbled upon a mystery and then do what they're told to do to resolve it without showing real passion. I know our character's motivation is to discover more about their power but it doesn't feel that strong to me.
Coming back to the Witcher 3, Geralt's whole motivation is to find his daughter who is chased by monsters. We're repeatedly shown and told how much she means to him so we become invested in him finder Siri.
I wasn't as invested in the main story of HL. The side quest with our friends were more interesting imo because they had interesting stories and background. But i think they could've been more impactful if our character had a way to relate to them (like our character has a sibling too so they understand Sebastian obsession or they have a parents who died and they show empathy for Natsai, etc).
Don't get me wrong I loved the game, it just leaves room for improvement and I hope my wish will come true.

In a sequel they have the opportunity to improve on many aspects that would enhance replayability - the main one being a loyalty system so your actions affect how the world and characters react and respond.

While I wouldn’t be opposed to the sequel still being in Hogwarts, we really need to explore the other elusive schools of the Wizarding World. They’re hardly ever mentioned in the films, so this would be a fantastic opportunity to develop a full fledged game with one of the other schools as the setting. It would be something completely new to the HP a universe and greatly expand the franchise and lore.

The game has a in game clock which depending on the time you have to be in class if not you will be chased by the prefects . In hogwarts I feel like I’m in a museum rather than a school . No in game clock like in bully. The world feels empty and lifeless not to mention I can’t even do half of the thing a hogwarts student would do like play wizards chest , gob stones and of course quidditch . Hopefully the the second game would be better . Last of all The story was complete trash .

@@John-996yes but rockstar wasn’t that that big back big then compared to now and bully is literally a PS2 game and it’s more immersive and has better game mechanics than hogwarts . You would think 16 years after bully games would be better no matter who the company is with the technology we have now

@@eeedddd5738 LMFAO oh brother, you evidently know absolutely nothing about game development. Technology doesn’t built great games (not even close!), incredibly talented and experienced developers do. Rockstar in the era of Bully wasn’t massive enough to pour billions of dollars into a single game, but they were still some of the greatest developers on the planet back then. This is Avalanche’s first big AAA game, and for a first attempt, they absolutely crushed it.

This game is trash. Fun for like the first few hours during the start and then the charm wears off and you realize that this is the game lmao. It’s marketed as an action RPG, but it’s so far off from that. No choices, poor combat, npcs will disappear and reappear/ refuse to help you fight, dull and repetitive open world, every puzzle and cavern is the same thing repeated over and over, filled with loot that is useless, main quest is boring and forgettable, side quests are even worse. no quidditch, classes are lame. Bully did it better in 2006, wand and broom customization is lacking and useless. So much meh and bland from a game that takes place in the wizarding world.
The only cool part of the game is Hogwarts, and it’s a fraction of the game. Besides that, it’s neat that the seasons change and nifflers are adorable. definitely the best HP game yet, but that’s not saying much lol. I’d give the game like a 4/10. Definitely misleading in the marketing, and falls short of basically everything except exploring hogwarts.

@@Very_Sleepy50 cool story bro. Me and like 90% of players uninstalled the game in february. Once again, story is mid and forgettable, combat is poor, exploring is literally pointless, why would you explore every nook and cranny? It’s just the same house, cave, and puzzle repeated 100 times with loot that is so useless you might as well not pick it up. I 100% the game, but that’s only because I do that with every game. Couldn’t wait to uninstall it and leave my review on the page. When you look at devs history, it’s not a surprise to see the only games they worked on are games like Hannah Montana ,Meet the Robinsons, Rugrats, and Chicken Little

The obvious way, to me, at least, that they should structure the sequel is with Hogwarts as the central hub of the new, expanded world in the next game. I'd imagine that they'd simply keep a slightly smaller version of the Hogwarts area as the central hub, at which the main character would seek out quest lines, and then that would open up other, very distinct and separate areas to travel to to complete those sections of the story.

The sequel can have the same setting but add more mechanics, interactive npcs, features, extra locations (London, Diagon alley, Chamber of Secrets etc.) just like Spider-Man 2 is doing with Brooklyn and Queens.
Fans enjoy the castle but add features that make it feel that much more immersive with a different story, maybe even a different timeline and people will buy it.

A good fix to the problem of the character setting, and i believe that is by having a TriWizard tournament. Have two schools come over, just like in the movies and books, it adds more and new locations as well as good plot for the story where the player can re-discover the castle once more as well as having new bad guys.
