PLEASE NOTE: The names in this video were picked because many of them are traditional, especially in Gaeltacht areas, for the past century or so, though not all of these names are in common usage today. In some cases, the pronunciation reflects the common pronunciation of the name in Ireland, though it may not be correct historically. If your Gaelic name was left out, that may be because it has only become popular very recently or simply because I forgot to include it. For many names, multiple correct pronunciations are possible.

This video is awesome!

The video helped me a lot!
Our 1st child; Kevin

Greetings from Germany

My son is Brendan and my name is Siobhan as well. My daughter is Mollie. I don't spell it w a Y , I know! Lol also I don't know how to put the Fada with the smartphone on my name or my son's. Any help with that?
@@siobhanwhite7636 I don't know if this works generally but it did work on an old iPhone of mine and also works on my current Samsung Galaxy. Instead of tapping a letter, hold your finger on the desired letter. A small window comes up with multiple copies of that letter and a different accent for each copy. Slide your finger up to the fada and release.
My first language is Spanish and I read the name Caoimhín wrong, I am glad to find your video and learn so many others, thanks!

A new character from one of my favorite game series has the name Cionaodh, and it seems every website I go to has an entirely different pronunciation. I would love to know how to tackle this one accurately.

Siobhan mentions in one of her videos that she is from Tipp.
It must be hard to keep a straight face in front of the camera and do these, but thank you so much! Seeing the way to move the lips for some of them helps a lot for someone who has a hard time with the way it's spoken
Since you can speak Gaelic so well, you should play in movies when they need actresses who can speak Gaelic.
Greetings,
André, sorry, Aindrias
The language is called Irish or Gaeilge. It would usually be a Dublin accent in movies, but occasionally there are other accents.
You're AMAZING
Please could you tell me the Irish pronunciation of Daineal the Gaelic for Daniel? Also you didn't say the Gaelic version of Adam

My name is properly spelled Darren and an Irish lady at a bank pronounced my name the original Gaelic way but I cant remember how she did it. I think it was close to how Darragh is pronounced. It was a long time ago and I don’t remember exactly though.
I saw a video sometime ago of an Irish girl with the name "Caitriona" or "Catriona" and she said she's annoyed when people call her like "ka-tri-na" instead of "ka-tree-na." How would such a name be pronounced then? Or what is the familiar pronunciation of that name to you? Thanks!
Kevin = Caoimhin = Kwee-veen = OK, Thank-you, God Bless.
I always thought Fionn was pronounced like its more simplified counterpart, Finn. Unless this is one of those cases where both are acceptable?
Better than the drawled out “Fee-awhn” I hear regularly.
Bit late but Fionn is pronounced as fee-awhn unlike Finn. The name is the Irish Word for blonde or fair háir.
I’m looking for If Eudard is a Irish Gaelic name and how to pronounce it, I’m reading a book and it is driving me crazy. Hopefully someone will see this even though it is an old post!
Bitesize Irish thank you so much for replying I will look up Scottish boy names 🙏🏾❤️
Hello, Siobhan! Could you tell me what langeroo, or/and lan-ge-roo mean? "Monto" is me favorite song and I would love to know what is the meaning of the word. Chorus ends: " Langeroo / Lan-ge-roo to you!" and when I Google "Langaroo" I get some results and one of them gives me lyrics of "Monto" and at the end of the last chorus it says: "Liathróidi to you (Goodnight to you)" - is this the correct translation?
Thank you.
Siobhan! Go raibh maith agat for your comment. Go raibh maith agat for giving me inspiration. When I saw you and several other lads promoting Gaelic language through UA-cam, I thought I should do the same. I come from Georgia and I think I could promote me language as you do your own. I think that is the best thing a citizen could do - promote their native language. So Go raibh maith agat for that inspiration you gave me.
Gartha! Cheers! (that's what I mean anyway :D )
I am sorry, but I can't "heart" your comment. I'm very dumb at internet things (and not only internet thing) :D
Oh! that's great, I mean i'm glad it's not my fault :D
@BitesizeIrish Hi Siobhán! I’m reading a book about a Highlander named, “Circenn”, who’s nickname is “sin”. So I know how to pronounce the second half of it. I just would like to know if the first “C” sounds like an “S” or a “K”. Will you help me, please? 😁
oh! your name's Siobhan?? that's one of my favourite irish names along with Saoirse
newspapers in southern ireland never spell these irish lingo words properly!
for instance, sean is pronounced shan and means old. but if you put a willie over the a, it becomes shawn which means john. there is an excuse for the ulster newspapers misspelling these words, of course, but not the south.
these southern papers are flushing the languge down the loo.
Might have to revert to spelling it Sioḃan at this rate. ;)
@@BitesizeIrish if they are not going to bother writing the accents. They just have to write it phonetically 😔😔. But there's no excuse for not writing it. It is a shame what they're doing
Saoirse is my name :)
I cannot find a reliable pronunciation of Mathgamain ( ˈmaθɣaṽinʲ ) or how to correctly spell it in traditional written form. Any advice? It is the origin of my last name.

There isnt. Both Conchubhar and Conchúr are just Connor. But if you were to pronounce them then the latter would be connor and the former would be pronounced Kruh-hoor.... honestly though a lot of these names are pronounced differently depending on where you're from. This lass sounds like shes from the middle of no where

Devin is an Irish first name.
It's an alternative form of the surname 'Devine', which in turn is an anglicisation of 'Ua Daimhín' meaning 'descendant of the ox'
@DaithideNogla AYYYYEEEE!
Hi
How do you pronounce the Irish name Craig in Irish? Should it be: "Kreig"?
@@BitesizeIrish Go raibh maith agat.
Is í an fhírinne go bhfuil claonadh agam freisin an t-ainm Craig a fhuaimniú mar a dúirt tú, eadhon "kregg", gan an "i".
Craig is my second name, which I rarely remembered in 50 years of my life and which few people know.
On the 21st, I have a deadline at the mbhaile Turta court in România Éireann for correction of material errors. For example, in my documents, instead of nAntóin, the first name says "Today" incorrectly, and they completely forgot about Craig. Inspired by nature, by rock. Also, the name Marcu appears correctly, but my second name, namely Williams, which is in English, again the "elected ones" forgot, because they write documents...
how do you say Samuel?
Finally I can pronounce the name of ma discord friend, Eoin
Beta Wolf not always how that’s pronounced tho
You pronounce it Owen
To me im hearing masculin nane Cólín pronounced like my name Colleen which means irish girl even though no females in Ireland are named Colleen pronounced the same way. Am i mistaken?
@@BitesizeIrish oh ok i got you, its hard for me to hear it on tv, if you were teaching me in person i would be able to distinguish the difference.
@@BitesizeIrish i would have to have you personally teach me the difference face to face to differ the pronunciation, I need to be there in order to learn. I kinda understand though, thank you. I love the gaelic language " i enjoy learning multiple languages" though, It's definitely not pronounced phonetically.
I came here for LFC goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.
Please can you teach me how to say Fiachra?
I'm half a year late but if you still don't know how to pronounce it...
Fee- cra
Fee-uc-ra
Is there a Gaelic name that is pronounced 'Lee-ik'?? I heard a mother yelling at her son years ago and she called him that and I fell in love with the name and would love to use it but I can't find anywhere that tells me how to spell it :(
I almost want to write it as Leic and just pretend it's a real name, but if there is a proper spelling I'm desperate for it. If that isn't a name, are there any similar names? I really do love 'Lee-ik' much more than the common Liam, but I want my future son to have a 'real' name
José&KaitPlusFate Lorcan?
What about ruadh
Eanna/Anrai
How do you pronounce Abbán?

Is Irish related to any other languages? At times it sounds like a Middle East language.
Scottish Gaelic is its sister language. The two are almost identical. They're both part of the Celtic group along with languages like Welsh. All are Indo-European along with most European languages like Latin, Germanic, Slavic, Greek, etc. If Irish sounds very different from English, its because English is derived from German mixed with French
No
Toyota1949 Scottish Gaelic split off from Irish when Irish settlers landed on the western isles of Scotland, so Scottish Gaelic and Irish are very similar.
Gaeilge is one of the oldest languages in the world; as old as latin or hebrew. The ancient Ogham language (written) is similar to hebrew. You should definitely look into it.
What accent do you have? xD
Odhrán O'Shea She has a Scottish accent and, for some reason, calls the language Irish Gaelic instead of Irish, which is what it's called throughout Ireland.
@preasail you're talking nonsense
Odhrán Ó Sé irish
preasail That's not a Scottish accent. And she refers to it as Irish Gaelic because this is the internet where people from most countries spend their time, and there is a difference between Irish Gaelic and Scottish Gaelic.
An bhfuil fear agat?
oof for the longest time I thought Fionn was pronounced "Fin"
Finn is the anglicised form of Fionn, that's probably what you're thinking of.
M like Fionna
Caoimhin = Kevin
Caoimhe = Kev-ee?
I’d say Keeva in English
shee-wawn? i learnt it as shivawn.
It's Shoo-awn in her dialect. In Ulster it's often just Shoon. Shuh-VAWN is very much the Munster pronunciation but much more popular since it's easy for English speakers to pronounce.
aodh lmao
BRIAN IS. BRI...AN
