Americans are tantamount to Neanderthal though
Most Americans actually do know that Sean is Irish. Especially if their name is Sean. Americans tend to have names that match their family heritage/ancestry.

"MH" is a V sound. And it makes somewhat sense when you start to play with your own sounds. In th eUSA you also have names like "Leigh" or "Lee", same thing.
It's not always a V sound, depends on the vowels either side of it (usually)... Can be a W sound too
It's not always a V sound is the H is a séimhú
How is "Lee" the same as "mh" making a V sound? Lee is "ee" making an E sound, "mh" is 2 consonants making a different consonant sound.
@@mars7612 I think she’s just pointing out examples of letters that can be pronounced differently. An American who sees the name Leigh written down would probably know to pronounce it Lee, they would know its not pronounced like neigh 🐴 with an L. In this case “gh” is pronounced “ee”, other examples are “mh” being pronounced as “v”
MH is a V.
The BH in Siobhán is a V, making it "Shevaun"
I feel like that's alota work, just use the letter V.

i need to know, did the irish not know how to spell in english? or is it a completely different language that is written in english? because the spelling makes no sense to me, like how is Naimh pronounced Nieve? it makes 0 sense in english
@@Kai88988 Mutations is the main reason, which exists in all modern Celtic languages (like Welsh, Breton, etc.). Irish is a completely different language with its own orthography system. I am not Irish, so here is just what I observe: if a consonant follows with "h" (like the "mh"), mutation happens! (in the case of "m", into "v"/"w")
Lastly, I think the vowels are also not pronounced as they are. For Caoimhe for example, the "aoi" is pronouned "ee" or "uee" for some reason. Maybe it's like English: "aoi" is pronounced as "A-yoy" in ancient times, but speakers changed while the spelling remained. I don't know for sure...
@@Kai88988are you ok in the head? Irish is a language that exists, and is written in the *LATIN ALPHABET* (there is no English alphabet). It had different rules just as say french or Spanish does. My god I lose faith more and more everyday

I know it's hard to believe for some, but to a person who is not Irish or exposed to the Irish culture, it can be a common misconception, I believe, to think Irish is simply a people and an accent. Again, it may seem obvious, but not necessarily for someone who, in their young life, never really had a reason to question otherwise. ❤️

PAULA BELLIARD omg thats so funny because I am Irish! And the language i study in school is called Irish! Yes our main language is English but parts of Ireland (Gaeltacht) speak irish!! The language is not ‘Gaelic’ it is Irish and is widely spoken.lmaooo
PAULA BELLIARD hahahhahahah
I am Italian, so even pronouncing "John" feels like forcing my mouth to produce an almost alien sound (yeah, our phonetics is unbelievably different!). After some years I've got used to how English sounds and to how the spelling often seems to be almost completely unrelated to the pronounciation, to the point that sometimes you just can't guess how to read a word unless someone tells you how it should be pronounced and this is so strange to me, coming from a Language where every single letter of the alphabet is always pronounced in the exact same way (except for a handful of combinations such as "gn", "gl", "ch"). Then I watch this video and now I know English is a walk in the park in comparison to Irish! I guessed every single name wrong. And in a couple of cases I know I would have never guessed the right pronounciation even if I tried 20 or 50 times. Quite fascinating.
“oh no we’ve got one of those weird symbols “,
dude it’s called a fada
Its ironic... I dont think theres a fada in fada haha
oh ok i’ll edit it
but how are we meant to know that? to us these names sound made up. like how is Naimh pronounced as Nieve? it makes 0 sense in english and its plain wrong. unless this is from a completely different language that is written in english

Niamh Murray my daughter's name is Nieve Murray!!!! That's so funny to me to meet another Nieve Murray. I had to do the phonetic spelling in America.
Gracie O'Brien right
"Irish is a different language?" - OH MY GAAWWWDDD!! THIS IGNORANCE!!! IT'S UNBEARABLE!!
和ァ独 Right?! I hated when that one guy at 2:26 said, "There is no other way to pronounce it. If they say it a different way, it's wrong." Um, there are other languages in the world besides English, you know. -_-
Yeah, also when that girl said the fada was a weird symbol I'd like to see them try an Irish class
French really isn't that hard, apparently polish is one of the hardest languages using the latin alphabet. Basque is apparently also difficult.

I feel like the lack of American English variants (and please tell me if I'm wrong) and the "American pride" are factors that lead people to not appreciate language diversity. Cause if they would care, those hundreds of Native American languages wouldn't be close to extinction. And maybe if they had a more positive attitude about Native American culture and so on, every American would learn a bit of a Native American language that used to be spoken in their area before Westerners came to the New World.
Pro side though: many Americans learn at least a bit Spanish. So that's a start.
Molly O Callaghan
Was fada that diacritic?
The way they say my names if how my teacher pronounce it *flash backs*

Seriously guys, Niamh was by far the easiest to pronounce. Or maybe I'm just saying that because I'm Irish. Anyone else here Irish? :D

lochlainn Maguire castlewellan
It's only easy because we're Irish so we know what it is.
Also, it's not keeva as it was pronounced, it's. Queeva
In my opinion, Naimh is by far one of the prettiest names I've ever heard, and I was shocked at how hard it was for them to pronounce it.
“I feel like these could make a comeback”..... these names are so common now
“The e has no use”
English speakers: *queue*
Dude, is originally french word, not the best example tbh
I'm fluent in Irish and I forgot that others found our names hard. It was only when I saw an Australian youtuber stumble a lot over the name Niamh. Also 4 of my cousins moved to the states 3 of whom have Irish names Ailbhe(Alva), Eoin(Owen) and Tadhgh(Tige) the attempts were hilarious :-) and
And FADAS the sign over vowels lengthen the sound of the vowel:
A is said the same as English
Á is said Awh
I is the same as English
Í is said ee
O is the same uh
Ó is said the same as English (Oh)
U is said uh
Ú is said eww
wait wasn't there an author named Eoin Colfer? I remember reading somewhere that it was indeed pronounced "owen" lol
ukuleledeparis Yeah in Irish we spell it Eoin it Eoghan (it along with Seán can be a translations of the name John) xx
Beth Freeman I have a friend called Eoin at first I thought his name was said Ewan
WjAdams yeah a lot of Americans thought my cousins name was Ian. Its an excusable mistake we've some funky combinations of letters :-P xx
Okay
