  • Bone conduction headphones might just have a place in motorcycling as an alternative to Bluetooth Communicators or earbuds that block out the noise of the traffic.

    I rode for about 30 years with music or comms or the like and I was under the impression that I wouldn't be able to hear traffic etc. I was mistaken. I have found that it is possible to listen to music and still hear what's happening provided you set the levels sensibly. Note. I also wear ear plugs and can still hear both the music and the traffic without a problem.
    I started about 12 years ago just with Bluetooth for the GPS and found that there wasn't a problem, so I started listening to music on long trips, again, there wasn't a problem. So now I listen to the radio on the bike. I think that, with everything in life, if you use common sense, _most_ things can be done safely and correctly.
    Now that I've seen your video, I'll look into them and decide if they'll do the job for me.

    I use these (Open Run Pro) daily for business calls and music. I like them. I've not used them while riding yet, and I probably won't. Not for music anyway. But they come in handy if I get a call on the bike. I can pull over to a safe spot and take the call. The caller can hear my Harley or the wind noise, so it is essential to stop and switch the bike off. If I wear my Shoei full-face helmet, I remove these and use my Sena. But all in all, they are great. They don't hurt my ears like in the ear head phones do, and I sometimes forget they are on my head.

    I ride with music sometimes, but I have Cardo Packtalk unit. You have to install small speakers in helmet, but you can also hear outside noise as well. Another benefit is that you can also make and receive phone calls while riding. Headphones or earbuds inside a helmet is a no go for me.

  • @DuncanJimmy
    @DuncanJimmy 2 роки тому +7

    The Aftershokz are superb so long as the batteries don't give out, which mine did after a year therefore became useless. While they worked though, it was wonderful having a sound system that didn't require anything to be shoved into/ onto my ears and was waterproof. Mine were IP68, which meant I could shower, bathe, swim, kayak, run/ walk in rain and ride my motorcycle in all types of weather without fear of damaging them. One thing I can't stress enough though, the sound of the wind in your helmet WILL damage your ears without protection. If you like hearing aids, then by all means. If not, then use ear plugs.

      @@judge831 I know plenty of motorcycle riders who have tinnitus and/ or hearing loss from not wearing ear protection while riding. Even if it's quiet for you, the wind creates a pressure differential that flexes your eardrums constantly. Trust me, NOT worth the risk.

    I have a pair of these that i, like you, got for riding my road bike (bicycle). I also use them while shopping, working around the house and even pair them to my old laptop (which is plugged into the tv via hdmi - don't have a smart tv) so i can watch movies at night without waking my missus or my daughter up.
    I'm getting back into riding soon and had been thinking about getting an intercom system. It occurred to me a few weeks back that using these might work, so i grabbed my old helmet and tried it out. It would be interesting to see what the audio is like when making a phone call (whether they can hear you or just hear the microphone rubbing against the padding). I'll probably use these to start with and then might upgrade to a proper system. I won't be riding with anyone so don't need the intercom aspect, just for bluetooth audio.

  • @jasonbishop5408

    I use Shure in ear monitors with a custom built wiring harness that plugs into the back of my Cardo instead of the provided in helmet speakers. They seal the ear canal to block out wind/ambient noise which allows me to run the volume low enough to enjoy the music but still hear what's going on around me. To get around the issues with putting your helmet on over any kind of ear phone get a moisture wicking helmet liner/beanie. Not only will it help keep you cool but your helmet will slide on nice and easy right over your headphones. Helps when removing as well. All that being said, if you want to hear the nurse who's spoon feeding you bananas when you're in your 90's you should always be using something that seals your ear canal.

      i had some se425, unfortunately mine were lost or stolen. Trying to explain to people that the sound quality at low volumes it far superior than any bluetooth headset is impossible. Being wired can be a pain but only an audiophile will appreciate them. Kudo's to you for respecting your hearing in the future

    I know an extra trick while putting these on! Pretty funny seeing you stick your fingers all in your helmet like I do all the time haha. I use these headphone all the time while I ride, it’s so nice for some quiet tunes and hear everything still. As you’re pulling your helmet down over your head using your fingers, take your thumbs to push up on sides of the headphones. I love my shoks, I love them so much I own two of them and have had five total. But I have some problems with them, with and without a helmet on.
    #1 The pressure points explode when your helmet is on for more then 1 hour.
    #2 the charger cable is proprietary, but there are companies that sell extra cables
    #3 if you drop them off your head sometimes the speaker inside can become loss and rattle
    Other than that they are amazing headphones and make life way easier

    As I have both an intercom and the aftershokz I wont try them under a helmet. I really need buttons to control the audio and incoming calls as I try to leave my phone in the pocket as much as possible and not on my phonemount. But for daily "normal" use the aftershokz are perfect. the soundquality is good enough and they are so convinient that I happily sacrifice a bit of soundquality.

    As long as the music is not at max you can still easily hear your surroundings. Earbuds that passively block out some (not all) of the road noises are safer for your hearing in the long run. Really hard to hear traffic noises when your deaf, protect your ears on your rides.

    • @SirNarax
      @SirNarax Рік тому

      Safety depends a lot on the music you are listening to. Humans are actually completely incapable of multi-tasking. Like at all, nobody can perform true multi-tasking. Nobody. What we do is serial tasking which is rapidly switching between tasks and decreases the attention we can give to all of them and makes us more prone to errors. Listening to music may not seem like a 'task' but it occupies the brain the same as one. Especially music with lyrics and very especially rap.

    Great review but…..a possibly game changing omission is the ability to deal with telephone business when riding. Even the cheapo (not Shokz) bone phones have microphones which work fine under a helmet. It’s a little sketchy but the multi function button (answers ringing phone) is located so a shove on the side of your helmet pushes it. Bonus non-Riding related plus…Bluetooth them to your television for the next Moto GP. Incredible.

    Sounds very interesting. However. For the sake of references" could you make some comparison to other known (or popular) helmet head sets? I use different sets of Sena's and I am often desapointed by the low frequencies they produce.

    Does it have a mic? If so, how does it perform in the helmet on the go?

    The sound itself is different than of the normal headphones

    I can't ride without my music but I use the correct stuff because I have a proper helmet come system

    It's strange maybe but I could not listen to music on my bike, in fact I don't even like to wear ear plugs. To me, hearing traffic, the engine, and even the wind is a vital part of riding. My main riding friend, on the other hand, always wears ear pods and listens to music constantly, which is highly annoying when we pull up and I say something to him about the route or something or we passed for a minute or more while he fannies about with wires and buttons and says, "what did you say?".
    What I do think is a possible breakthrough are these units that make the helmet shell transfer music and or intercom to the rider. Does away with awkward earphones in one stroke.

    Wish this would work for me but I find it allmost impossible to get them on correcty (had a pair already for running), and if they're not on right the hurt like hell! Also, taking them off is painful too. Might not help that I wear glasses.

    How is the volume? I have tried two different comms sets, and both work fine for music, but for podcasts and audiobooks I have the volume all the way up, but it's just loud enough to be annoying. It's like listening to an ASMR, except not being able to understand distinct words defeats the purpose

    The vibration should resonate in the helmet giving it a bit more sound.

      It resonates the side against the Tragus. It's not similar to a speaker that has open end. More like hearing the music from 2 cars with the windows up but you're outside between them. It's there but not blasted in your ear.

      The padding would absorb it plus they don't vibrate all that much.

    Interesting....I wonder how this would work for people with a lot of hair. I work from my bike, so my question would be how effect the microphone would be with these under a helmet/at speed (yes, it is helpful for ME to be able to take/make calls while riding).
