An 1100 nautical mile offshore sail straight to Svalbard in the Arctic Circle

  • Three years in the making and all of our preparation led to this moment...pushing off for Svalbard! 1100 nautical miles held more than a few surprises as the weather window we had hoped for evaporated. Join us on the beginning of this epic journey!
    We have been working very hard on our next Greenland episode, but it's not ready yet. So we interrupt our regularly scheduled broadcast to bring you this more recent recording.
    _______________________________________________
    A viewer, Christian, pointed out that in the beginning of this video we used an outdated pre-WWII map.
    We thank them for pointing this out and humbly apologise to our viewers. It was certainly not our intention to include a map with borders that recall such a different time in history.
    Especially when talking about more remote places such as the Faroe Islands and Svalbard, we try to include maps to give people a better sense of our location. We created this real time update while in Svalbard and, with limited time and internet access, we downloaded one of the first copyright free maps we came across without really taking note of any locations outside of where we were sailing. That was a mistake on our part.
    We strive to hold ourselves to the highest standard and, though mistakes do happen, we try our best to be as accurate as possible...and to own up to mistakes when they do happen.
    Thank you to Christian and all our viewers who bring such errors to our attention. It will serve to remind us in the future to be aware of the bigger picture as well as the minute details.
    With kind regards,
    Monique & Drake

      I love your adventures and meticulous preparations, and steady seamanship while you sail. Well done. I am curious if you have seen any of the videos by Roger Taylor who traversed these same waters 1 month after your voyage, travelling non stop in his small 24' junk rig, engine-less boat, Ming Ming 2? He left northern Scotland around the beginning of July 2018 and sailed to 81deg, 15.095 N and 46deg, 25.156 E ; rounding Svalbard and traveling till the charts ran out, before returning home with a trip that lasted 56 days and covered app. 4000 NM !! I admire all of you who do these trips and live vicariously through your adventures. Thank you so much.

    Rough sail by the looks of it, I'm a big fan of heaving to, great foul weather tactic and although you were drifting South at a knot, the vessel and crew get a much needed rest and are safe. Hove to is such a simple and effective strategy that too many blue water sailors don't use enough, as someone who sails off the South African coast which is treacherous to say the least, where winds can go from 15 (average) to 50 knots in a matter of hours, reefing techniques and heaving to are mandatory off-shore prerequisites, wishing you fair winds

      @drakeParagon  5 років тому

      Hey S/V Adma, I think I'm going to pretty much stop using the patch since the side effects just seems to be getting worse over time, including a pretty bad upset stomach which is something I'm trying to avoid.
      However, the pills are AMAZING. Like super-crazy-how-have-I-not-had-these-in-my-life amazing! Our sail from Svalbard to Norway was 6 days of not great weather. Pretty rolly and just generally uncomfortable BUT I didn't get sick. Not only did I not get sick, but I didn't even feel sick. I actually offered to stand a longer watch for a crew member who was getting sea sick which NEVER happens...I'm usually the one feeling miserable.
      I suppose the one bad thing is the pills are only available in Faroe or on the ferry from Denmark to Faroe and Iceland. Guess I'll have to stock up when we're there this summer! ⚓-Monique

      @@drakeParagon would be nice to know the active ingredients! I did some pills but they were horrible. They worked but I went into zombie state. Not caring if we live or die... not really enjoyable. Took me 10 year but I am no longer the first to be ill and can do my job (engine room) regardless of being ill. I know it is bad, but it feels so good to see someone else be sick and be fine yourself :-)

    • @drakeParagon
      @drakeParagon  5 років тому +1

      @@Nerd3927 , oh wow, that is horrible to be sick in the engine room of all places! Drake does fairly we at sea and, for the most part, doesn't really get sick. However, put him in the engine room in rolly seas with all the diesel and heat and he can get sick pretty quickly.
      So, the two ingredients are Diphenhydramine and caffeine. (in Faroese, 50mg diphenhydraminhydroclorid & 50mg koffein) which is, from I understand, just something similar to Benedryl with a caffeine kick.
      I've tried all the other stuff that people recommend, including Stugeron which people seem to think is failsafe, but they never worked for me. (and don't get me started on ginger! Ugh!)
      I'm not sure what these pills, called Koffinautin, are doing differently but it sure works for me. Now I just wish they would export or ship them...⚓-Monique

    Hello Drake and Monique! I've been following your journey from the beginning, and, being a sailboat fanatic and a media worker myself, I cannot value highly enough your work as sailors and journalists. F.e. the interviews you did in Greenland - so much love and empathy and at the same time, insisting on the delicate subjects, depopulation, whaling, colonialism - great work! One remark - being from Germany, I noticed at a single glance that you used a map of Europe where Germany is shown in it's borders of 1937 - Nazi times, that is - and Poland in it's pre - WWII shape, too... Just a remark of a "bear of very little brain"... best regards, Christian

      Hi J O, The Schengen Agreement prevents Americans from being in the Schengen area for more than 3 months at a time. After the 3 months you have to leave and then be out of the Schengen area for at least 3 months before you can return to any Schengen country. We wanted to use our 3 months Schengen time sailing down the coast of Norway back to the UK after Svalbard. I think if we had used up part of our Schengen time sailing up the coast of Norway, then we might have run into problems with Schengen time limits on the return trip. I wish I could have waited for a better weather window for the sail up, but I had to get there in time to meet our crew that was flying into Longyearbyen.

    the map on the beginning is kind a old isnt it ? why that map ?

    • @drakeParagon
      @drakeParagon  3 роки тому

      Hi Metyr,,
      Yes, we really wish that we hadn't used that particular map. It was our mistake, and in the description of the video you'll find that we wrote the following as soon as this error was brought to our attention:
      "A viewer, Christian, pointed out that in the beginning of this video we used an outdated pre-WWII map.
      With kind regards,
      Monique & Drake"

    I hate to say it but it looks like your boat needs a good scrubbing and maybe the teak polished and the decks cleaned. What am I missing? Maybe there’s a reason it’s in the state of repair

    • @drakeParagon
      @drakeParagon  2 роки тому

      It seems a little comical to me that you would make a comment like this on a video in which we sailed 1100 nautical miles directly to Svalbard in the arctic circle, just 600 nautical miles from the north pole. I think our boat looks great. I choose not to varnish the teak because I don't think it's necessary. The deck is cleaned regularly. More importantly, our boat is seaworthy, comfortable, and outfitted for the types of voyaging we are doing.

      I wouldn't want to do an offshore passage like this one without the ability to get constantly updating weather reports. The Predict Wind/Iridium Go! solution is the best thing I've found for this.

    I maybe wrong, but part of your not 'close-hauling' too well, could be do to the fact that your jib maybe shot, both the foot and the leech are flapping at 34:00???

    • @drakeParagon
      @drakeParagon  5 років тому

      Hi Ray, you're absolutely right. Later we ripped the jib to smithereens while sailing from Norway back to Scotland in strong winds (and in the middle of enormous field of oil rigs in the middle of the night.) We made a real time vlog and blog on Patreon about it called "Shredded in the North Sea". Here's a snippet from the blog..."The sheets whipped and cracked against the enclosure as Drake ran up to furl the sail. Alas, it was too late to save the jib. In its weakened state it took just a minute to shred the sail." www.patreon.com/posts/shredded-in-sea-22491426

    When I watch your videos I have this feeling I need to wear mittens ear muffs scarf and a woolly hat ......oh and I have to put the heating on ....when are you going to turn south ( and keep going )....

    • @drakeParagon
      @drakeParagon  5 років тому

      Ha! Maybe we should include a warning at the beginning of the videos.
      CAUTION: Watching this video will induce cravings for hot chocolate, a warm fire, comfy blankets, and a hot whisky. Wooly hat and mittens not included; continue at your own risk.
      Heh! (✿◠‿◠) As for going south, I think we're still a couple of years away from that...though not too far. We would like to go to Svalbard one more time, maybe spend a winter in Norway, and check out some other areas, but after that I think our thoughts will definitely be turning south. An Atlantic crossing is definitely in our future especially if we're going to eventually go through the Northwest passage! (I know, more cold.)
      A bit of warmth would be nice for a change. I'm not a huge fan of hot weather, but lately Drake has been looking longingly at his shorts that have been packed away for years. (✿◠‿◠) ⚓-Monique

      Mo has filmed countless hundreds of hours of footage, and much of that has been in very demanding sailing conditions and other stressful situations. We've sailed together for many tens of thousands of miles to some of the most remote places on the planet. We each have our strengths and weakness. We're both doing the best that we can. We know we can depend on each other. And Mo deserves as much credit for all that we have accomplished as I do.
