How to Say "I Don't Know" When You Don't Know An Answer

- How do you say I don't know when you don't know an answer without looking incompetent? This skill can make or break a presentation or meeting.
Yes, however, you'd better give some good follow up content if you want to maintain credibility.
How to handle questions when you don't know the answer right then:
1. "I don't know but here's what I do know . . ."
2. "I don't know but I'll find out and follow up with you"
3. "I don't know but let me refer you to somebody who does now"
I would like to credit Allen Weiner with this tip, especially the "I don't know but here's what I do know" aspect of it. This particular tip is not in his book but I highly recommend his "So Smart But . . ." book. It is a fun read and a valuable resource for any professional. Here's a link to his book:

That is excellent, l followed this up from an answer you gave a lady asking about her saying l don’t Know, too much.
One thing Bashar says ( l am much into Bashar, excellent channeler) when people say l don’t know, he says ‘yes, you do know. Somewhere in you is the answer, you do know, you are just pretending you don’t know’ but he is talking about personal things people ask him for advice for, not a business meeting or true questions about subjects we don’t know about.
I have a friend who is going through a difficult phase in his life with his wife and as a result, he is so lost in his mind he keeps saying l don’t know, like he has lost faith in all his thinking abilities. I do tell him that he knows the answer… if only he stopped saying l don’t know for a minute, and just paused, and looked for an answer of how he feels about such and such thing…
So you started this channel more for work type people! I see from the titles. I don’t work in such office industry but it must have been helpful for those with meetings and office type interactions. I hope you are doing well and getting plenty of customers who want to improve their speech!
Answer it like this:
''Does it matter? Or it is quite an adequate question that causes multiple purposes that I can't clarify or remember the documentation of what you say, will you please repeatedly elaborate of what you interact me before all of this inconclusiveness again?''

I hate the response “I don’t know”. Many people use this as a coping mechanism. It’s okay to use it situationally, but to respond with I don’t know to any question you get asked makes me want to respond by saying “Well what the hell do you know?”
