PlayStation 5 Slim Hardware Review - A worthy upgrade?

- Hardware revisions are nothing new in the consumer electronics space, Sony have repeated history again with their first proper redesign and now officially dubbed the Slim. Launched earlier this week here in the UK and a few weeks earlier in the US. I put the Original Launch model to the test with this new, slender, modular and more efficient console to test if you have anything to gain from an upgrade?

The Slim looks horizontally so much better. Also the size difference is really significant. Ordered the OG 1200 and the slim. Slim stayed.

I was able to trade in my launch model for $100 at Gamestop for the slim and got spiderman 2 with it. I thought it'd be a good idea, since my old one makes weird wind up fan noises when booting a game and I get a new warranty with the slim.
and your slim will too when it has accumulated more dust and dander. All that means is it was having to work harder because it was getting hot. Any pc will do that too if its getting hot (mostly gpu fans but any potentially)

Just started Resident Evil 4 VR2 and it’s a lot more fun than I expected. I didn’t care for the others RE on the old VR
You should also try Village if you haven't, it's the closest game to RE4 (heavily inspired by it) and it's soo good in VR.
@@AbrahamZX1 I’ll keep that in mind. I’m looking forward to playing GT7 in VR2 my wife got the family a racing wheel for Christmas. We are going to use that to help get our kids ready for driving 😂😂

It’s kind of irrelevant but there have been 3 versions of the PlayStation 5. The original 1100 series, 1200 series and 2000 series (Slim). The 1200 series released in 2022 got the die shrink that’s still found in the new Slim model.
Again fairly irrelevant to your review but kind of stood out to me when you were referencing 1100 and 1200 as the “original” model when talking about the die shrink.
Oh? Where would I check which version I've got?
Thank you NXGamer for the video! Even though Sony didn't deliver units to Europe before launch for review purposes, you made an excellent and very professional video, unlike certain UA-cam channels that didn't have the same respect for the viewer.
Without the fancy and pointless curves, the PS5 would use the space more efficiently, and it would look less out of place in many cases, too. Most of the time a console takes as much space as a box it would fit in.

I have my launch fat ps5 and I've been regretting not getting another one and now these are unavailable ;/
I mean mine is perfectly fine but it might be the last fully physical out of the box console ever.
That's exactly when/why I decided to strike/ask for one while the prices were a steal. Got one ordered for me at £399 as a bundle Christmas present & then I got a little single unit backup at £360.
Hopefully we can get a good PlayStation portable review. I would really like to bring it to work but I would have to be on a vpn to get onto my WiFi here. Other than that I play single player games like God of War, Final Fantasy games like that. So I’m unsure if it will be good for those games but I think I would use it to more for the side missions that don’t involve fast paced combat.
I like my OG. Let's see if a Pro comes out, i might reconsider than.

I assume the slim still retains the 32Gpbs HDMI port? I thought maybe there was a change for RGB (not 4:2:2) at 120Hz like XsX.
I cant play games anymore but this is really cool was hoping for some miracle tho to stop textures changing shapes 3 feet in front of u

I am noticing a difference in colour hue between the OG and the Slim, there is noticably more blue/green in the image of the Slim.
Is there something off with the capture or is the colour output simply different?
Have they unlocked 8K mode or 4K 4:4:4 mode? Or are these still not accessible?

I thought this too, but it's the HDR turned on/off for the tests as he mentions this later on. So you're not missing out on anything.

I bought the PS5 Slim Disc Version, very loud and it still suffers from coil whine, returned it immediately.
Gah. I have the worst coil whine with my launch model and it gives me headaches.
Mine is loud when installing a physical ps4 game for like 5 seconds and then goes completely quite

@@Not.Your.Daddy.SorryyIt's not normal. I have built PCs since the 2000s, if you have coil whine it's RMA worthy. They literally accept returns on that basis because it is not normal.

He just tested HDR on/off for these tests, so no worries.
It's uglier by a long shot than the jolly white giant. It's notable that the OG size 1200 models also use the 6mn process as the Slim. I'm glad you covered the offline/online questions around the disc drive on the slim. The Sony messaging around this was confusing.
DE looks nice, disc Ed looks awful. 😢
you forgot to add more heat (slim) Its not technically a worthy upgrade considering it won't last as long

It’s using less power, while running as quiet and exhausting more heat. This suggests the cooling system is just as effective, maybe marginally better (more heat exhausted at same efficiency means cooler inside). Durability won’t be worse unless there’s some specific issue or a hot spot on the motherboard.
Sony have a good history of making their consoles more reliable with revisions.
@@steveco1800 but you're forgetting one key difference.
Its also PRODUCING more heat while its running. That means everything inside is HOTTER. Which means throttling occurs.
There's literally not enough airflow inside of a ps5 slim so it actually has a HIGHER rate of failure.
Heat and dust are killers of ANY electronic device. Combine that with the FACT that standing vertically is a trend. Sony KNOWS their brand has been strong so they deny it is causing issues.
But its FACTUAL that it IS. Combine that with liquid metal cooling. That's on paper better but in reality a weakness. Why?
What does ANY liquid always do? Run towards the lowest point of gravity. Sooner or later it escapes the cooling and that's how ps5 (any version) overheats.
Benchmarks and teardowns have already shown that fact LONG ago.
Thermal paste is normally not a liquid (a lot closer to a paste that somewhat hardens up over time so it doesn't have that issue.
Its why some people are "fixing" ps5s (slims included) by replacing liquid metal cooling with regular thermal paste (about $10+ at microcenter, can probably get cheaper online)
Technically the cooling in a ps5 slim is WORSE (its hotter everywhere not just one point, the cooling wasn't really changed, just the room in which it can dissipate heat before exiting the console)
Because of that the original is actually MORE efficient (in terms of staying cool)
Sony does have the reputation of making their consoles more reliable with generations (so does most anyone)
But they've been fumbling the ball around ever since the ps3 era and that' just a fact

What are 12 years old?
@@mitsuhh PS5 can't play *30 years* of PC exclusives and *50 years* of 1,000's of emulated titles across dozens of platforms. PC also has more and often better PlayStstion 1-3 backwards compatibility than PS5.
PC also has access to modern Xbox and Epic exclusives (not that there's many of either). Also, a cheap PS4 can run Bloodborne and Ghost of Tsushima lol and the Demon Souls remake has great performance but the art direction was often worse, unfortunately.
Edit: also Ghost of Tsushima and Bloodborne can be played on a cheap, second hand PS4.
I wish there was a PS5 version that looked like a PS2 Slim on shape and size. 🥲
How would you get a Blu-ray drive down to that size?

For the disc drive version it would be a bit larger for sure, but is possible to reduce the optical drive by a lot in thickness.
Not with how much power they consume. The slimmer it is the louder the fans. Gaming laptops are very slim but at the cost to fan noise
