Also there are some real hidden gems in those subtitles. I should probably be worried about the fact that "phooooOoOoOooooo" makes me laugh lmao
Thank you so much for sharing this. My week has been horrible. My dog of 14 years passed away and I have been in a very dark place. Thank you for spreading happiness.
As someone who studies/reads classical Japanese literature for fun (if you ever get bored of learning regular Japanese, try looking up Classical Japanese, it's a wild ride) I've always been a fan of Linfamy's work. However, if you ever want to hear about a whole collection of Japanese folktales from the late Heian/early Kamakura period, or you just want to know where you can find old Japanese stories in general, hit me up. I love talking about this stuff.
@@keisimmons I've got some videos on my channel here where I retell these stories in my own words. They're from a collection called the Konjaku Monogatari Shu 今昔物語集. I only started a few months ago so I'm neither as good as our boy Linfamy here, nor do I have as extensive a catalog but, gotta start somewhere.
I had a very good friend that played the shakuhachi. His flute was made of a dark, knarled piece of wood that was a bit bulbous on the bottom end. He was very proud of it. It might've been a gift. 🤔 Either way, when he played it around new people, I would calmly say to them, "Did you know that flute is made from a fossilized bull p#%!$?" Straight up serious face. 😐 Seven outta ten people believed me, but George could never hold a straight face while blowing on the tip after I said that. 😏😂
Ahh yes, sounds like an instrument the Fujiwara would play, as they married their daughters into the imperial family and controlled the royal courts for 200 years...
I recently played a game called Ronin the Last Samurai, and one of the enemy is actually wielding a flute-like weapon (I'm confused if that's a hitoyogiri or a shakuhachi)
Thank you for all your informative content. Please consider making a video about Japanese vocal pitch in song and how it affects how the Japanese Idols sing today. I don't understand it, but from my western perspective, most Japanese Idols singing voice does not harmonize with my ears. If you can explain this, that would be great.
The pitch changes and the character within the tunes are different. but yeah, because they all start on the same pitch, its hard to tell the difference somtimes. When you play works in the different scales its much more noticiable.
@@Linfamy I see, I feared as much. Oh yes, thank you for that, if you find a way to do so, you didn't need to trouble yourself on my account. But I appreciate it.
I firstly learned the name of the modes from the Japanese gagaku, but it sounds like having poor connection with the gagaku's mode. Are there just five notes in one mode of the hitoyogiri?
No, there is 5 distinct modes. In this example, each mode starts on the tsutsune, all holes closed and notes are shifted around to fit the new mode. The pieces highlight the differences much better than just playing the scales.
I'm really having difficulty in hearing the difference in the modes. Probably due to a lack of hearing the instrument enough. Sounds beautifull though.

@@commentnahipadhaikar2339 sure I don’t disagree with any of those ideas but that doesn’t mean those two flutes are connected. The history more likely is connected to Korea, china and possibly India/turkey.
from the title, I thought the instrument was extinct because you needed to murder a monkey to make it, which would make it unethical these days. but since even the story shows it was made from bamboo from the start the title is very misleading XD

Yay new video!🎉
Idk why but monkey anything sounds funny when said out loud eg. monkey nuts, money bone, monkey brain...
so relaxing
Is this why the whistle in sekiro controls monkeys
possibly. I don't know if they got the inspirtation from this story or not. I wouldn't think so as its not a well known tale.
Well, Linfamy, at least you had a few moments of freedom, before he tied you up. XD
I got new apple headphones just last night and I can really hear the overtones and nuance going on there. Might be lost on phone speakers some
