Am I really the first to have found this treasure? Claudio, you are missed, no one to replace you, the calm you exuded is not to be found anymore. Thanks a million for this posting...
No, there is an entire abbado recording of the rehearsal of Verdi’s Requiem at la Scala with among, others, Montserrat Caballé. I have yet to find an actual recording of the actual performance.
I just ADORE when they sing at 6.39 the first "Kyrie Eleison" with one breath. Most of the singers sing "Kyrien" - breath - "Eleison". These do not. It's a pleasure listening to them.
Most of the conductors wanted from me to sing it separately (with little pause between those words, not breath) because it is two sepate words. It s not Kyrieleison, it is kyrie_eleison
You can see the quality of the man and the musician especially from 1.17.06 where they play the Sanctus for the first time. He seldom beat time in an insistent way, but here he does because it is a terrible mess. I can imagine Toscanini flying into a rage! This movement is always tricky and I imagine the acoustic of the church does not help. Abbado stops and has a second go. It is not much better. At the end, you feel for him when he says: "Mamma mia!" But he keeps calm and simply tells them they will have to rehearse it again. Sadly, we don't get to see him work to put it right.
Oh dear, this truly is a treasure. I love this. I also love how much of his speaking I can understand, since he's giving musical directions, which I know.
Who was the soprano during the rehearsal? Did Caballe step in for her or was she too busy to come to the rehearsal so they found someone to fill her during the time?
Cecilia Gasdia.
Nowdays the catholic church has banned the original medieval text from liturgia. The original medieval text describes drastically the paines of hell and its fire paines if you enter there after dieing. GUISEPPE VERDI as a dramatic composer recognized the infernal power of the medieval text. He dramatizised the words with his power of dramatizising music. The music strikes you in irresistible spell, again and again.
Only the Germans would have a voice-over during the opening measures! And it continues!! The speaker thinks what he has to say is more interesting than the music or what Maestro Abbado has to say about the music. As in SHUT THE HELL UP!!
Sorry, it's a documentation about Verdi's Mass not a rehearsal. Therefore very interesting and important speaker says. Maybe helpful if you translate text at info box?
If you want to listen without a vice over listen/watch concert version of the Requiem there are enough of them on YT. Any voice over commentaries are more justified than your rather silly comment about Germans
Meraviglioso Abbado.Quanto mi manchi! così pure Monserrat e Lucia!
Genial grabación.Montserrat,por las nubes. Inmensa.
Claudio Abbado-the Best !!!!!!!!!!!

We are in big sorrow,Mr. Abado. We miss you too much.
And we miss Montserat Caballe. The Diva absoluta.

Abbado war hier 52 Jahre alt.

Looks like Ramey was using a miniature orchestral score 😊
What year is this?

Il suo nome è CladiO!
I think it's funny how the director kept going back to that billboard for no apparent reason.
❤️🇱🇨!!!

And it's only the German translation of the latin requiem text. This is quite helpful to understand much better Verdi's music
