  • The Washington Post's Michelle Ye Hee Lee explains how some donors can contribute large sums of money to influence political campaigns without revealing their identities. We generally avoid using the term "dark money," but here we break down its origins and nuances. Hundreds of millions of dollars in so-called "dark money" have been spent on 2020 elections on both sides of the aisle, and those funds are almost impossible to track. But is this practice legal? Yes, thanks, to a Supreme Court decision and the tax code. In 2010, the decision in the "Citizens United vs. FEC" case enabled labor unions and corporations to float money into the U.S. political system. Registering under themselves under the 501(c)(4) tax code meant groups became able to mask where they got their money. Candidates are not allowed to coordinate directly with those groups, but they often benefit from their efforts. Another option for keeping donations quiet: registering as a "Limited Liability Corporation" or LLC. These entities can have cryptic names that conceal their identities. In 2012, a web of 17 non-profits and LLCs raised more than $400 million to go after then-President Barack Obama and congressional Democrats, all from secret sources. And there's plenty of undisclosed money on the left, too. In 2020, dark money groups are already active at all election levels. To learn more: wapo.st/2QOdcqK

Reject the 2010 Citizens United decision and accomplish campaign finance reform - while we still can.

We need to break the status quo of money in politics, need campaign finance reform, need to overturn citizens united which has led to super PAC spending. These are the Democratic platforms: Hillary ran on it, Biden ran on it. We need a blue Senate to actually execute campaign finance reform. For the first time, I feel like it's within reach.

Take down the establishment. Bernie 2020 is the last hope our country has to make positive effects in the world before it is too late.

@kingdom7 Yeah, sure, Russia is doing well, in that it’s economy is smaller than that of Italy’s and South Korea’s, despite having three times the population and in the case of The Republic of Korea a massive head start on modernization. I mean, sure Russia is a gas station pretending to be a nation, run by a strong man at the head of an oligarchy that harshly punishes any dissent, but they are really good at spreading disinformation. So you’re free to Depardieu it up if you like, and then you can learn what a Russian corporation does to the system.

Time is of essence, all individuals know who they are but nonetheless, thousands of them are fearful of facing the truth/reality is what makes a lot of individuals who are living in denial suicidal and more than enough of them rather than to say, okay, I had a great part of this calamity and I will have to confess and accept it in order to make changes, on the other hand, many are so deep into a world of conspiracy to the point that should they have a conscience, they become liabilities to the rest of the conspirators, a threat and their own personal wealth and the people in their lives are at risk.
    It's a really big messup

The dark money described in this video is not the true dark money. True dark money is barely trackable if at all, and even with the reporting if requested would not track the true dark money. There is no way politicians would call for these disclosures if they didn't have a back door to money. The calls for legislation are a red herring. There is also the non-monetary contributions, or, contributions in kind, such as bloated union office staff spending untold millions of hours campaigning while on the union clock. The calculation is not their hourly pay, but what would it cost a campaign to hire their experience and train new people. 5x union salary is approximately right. Also, when a group of media collude to suppress a story that would reap profits for them because it would hurt their candidate - that is a contribution and it can be incalculable in it's extremely high value.
