Fight, flight, freeze, or… fawn. “Fawn” is trying to placate or appease the other person to deescalate the situation or reduce the chance of getting hurt. It’s finally getting more attention as a trauma response and seems applicable to many SA cases.
Tbh, even if you haven’t heard of “fawn” before, you probably already have an idea of what that might look like. We recognize, “okay, I’ll do X, please don’t hurt me,” well enough as a response to a threat that it’s practically a trope in pop culture. It’s just that in real life, we don’t always say the, “please don’t hurt me,” part out loud.

As a side note, the MBTI test is also largely bunk science. It was created by two mystery novelists who had no significant formal education in medicine of any kind. If you want a real personality test that psychologists generally recognize as legitimate, you want The Big 5. MBTI is the new-age, scienced-up version of astrology; it can be a fun little thing to participate in once in a while, but putting too much stock in it is unhealthy and irrational.

One of the first things you learn in Scientology is the Training Routines. The one called Bullbaiting puts you in a chair facing another person. You must keep a straight face for 2 hours straight, not even a twitch, or you are Flunked and you have to start all over. The other person is allowed to say the most horrendous, vile things, scream at you, even touch you, even though touching is supposed to be off limits, and you can't move at all. This goes on for hours, days, and weeks on end until you have no reaction to the trauma being thrown at you. This is just the beginning of the abuse. The true depravity and abuse runs deep.

I've read books and done very deep dives into Scientology, and there's a lot there that really needs to be known to the public. One note I want to make is when someone is labeled a SP, they are deemed evil to Scientology... But most importantly to any family (including children, which are typically handed over to the cult to be raised "communally" by specific caretakers anyways) and friends still in the cult. The SP label ruins entire lives and any ties to humanity a person might have before. Anything can mark you a SP if Scientology deems you a threat. They will also call workplaces, housing, neighbors, ANYONE that you try to associate with to continue to bring you down to make sure you never speak up against them. There are entire units who control private detectives dedicated only to this, 24/7. That is what scares people. Scientology has a LOT of money due to their tax exemption as a "church" by the IRS (which is rooted in scandal and blackmail typical of this cult), and they continue to make their members pay for newer and newer buildings to put their money into assets to continue their "church" lie that they're giving back to the community. Most, if not all, of those massive, luxurious buildings are nearly empty. Scientology doesn't want you do know that they have so few members. But the few that they have are very powerful. FUCK David Miscavige.
If you want more info, Mike Rinder's "A Billion Years: My Escape from a Life in the Highest Ranks of Scientology" just came out this last September and it's a very powerful book detailing the surreal and horrifying life of Mike Rinder who was on one of those units that was in charge of ruining people's lives. Scientology's original founder has a rule that they still follow: Never defend, always attack. And they attack hard.
Also check out "Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath" Mike does with good friend and post-scientology actor Leah Remini, or just read about The Hole & Lisa McPherson. The entire story is so gripping and there are so many brave people that deserve to have their story honored and the bullying and criminal acts of the organization need to end!! 🖕🖕🖕 Thank you so much for making this video, even out of fear of this cult! The world needs to show they they can't be bullied into silence while people suffer because of David Miscavige and the evil people he protects.

For anyone interested that doesn't know much about Scientology, there is a special episode of Leah Remini's Aftermath show where they talk about how widespread and common assault cases are in the church and one of Masterson's former girlfriends speaks during it (it may have been more than one, it's been a while since I watched it). They go over the other ways the church suppresses those types of things from being reported. Masterson's case is pretty interesting and the victims' testimonies even more compelling when you see all the ways they really nip things like that in the bud before someone ever says anything inflammatory. For someone to have multiple, known, accusations is not common at all.

How about the fact that Jane Doe 3 moved to New York months after that, and invited Masterson out to meet her New Friends, then went back to his hotel room and had consensual sex again? WOULD ANY SA VICTIM EVER DO THAT? Of course not. How about how one of the other accusers NEVER MENTIONED a gun in any story or report, then suddenly mentions it after a different accuser said he had a gun? Look: He may be found guilty, because he should have had a Female Attorney cross examine these accusers, but Masterson is Not Guilty. hi leeja! i love your videos so im super glad youre growing and speaking on more current topics! i wanted to point out the fact that, while maybe you did not need this info in this video necessarily, the trigger responses are not three, but four: fight and flight (the two commonly known ones), freeze (the one you mentioned here) and fawn, which is when victim respond by trying to please the abuser or bargain with them or pleading. this last trauma response is extremely frequent in victim of repeated and prolonged abuse but it can present in anyone else just the same. i wanted to add this info because for some reason people only mention fight or flight or at most they add freeze, but rarely mention fawn except when its medical professional or other people who speak about mental illnesses, trauma and/or abuse and it is extremely important for people to know that this is one of the trauma responses and it is not uncommon nor less valid then any other. something else that can happen during traumatic events is also something called dissociation, a state the mind goes into to try to escape from what’s happening in the physical world, during which the person can have a vague awareness of what’s happening or it can be completely unaware, depending on many factors such as a propension to dissociation or history of trauma. this is something that people can also completely forget happening (both the dissociation itself and/or the events) and a lot of people are often never able to remember anything of. i hope this comment isn’t taken badly, cause i just think it’s something too important to not mention, regardless of how much i appreciate your content

I’m really loving these videos recently. I’d be interested for you to talk about the case that happened with the woman who lied about her pregnancy and the attacked another pregnant woman and took her baby out of her and was later sentenced to death. I know it’s a very tough case and a hard subject ((I’m pregnant and have two little ones so the gravity of the case is not lost on me) however, I think it would be an excellent opportunity to talk about mental health as well as the death penalty because the defense team took an interesting stance in the case and did a kind of “this isn’t her fault because the system failed her and it’s the system who is to blame”. I think there is a lot of room to talk about exactly what that “system” entails and areas we need reform as well as the death penalty needing reform etc. plus the case itself is interesting and it’s not an isolated incident. This has happened before. Maybe even touch on the subject of why this has happened so many times before and since this case. What is it in our society that is making woman so desperate and feeling like they must produce a child that they are willing to kill and take someone else’s? Similar to your experience, I was SA'd, and it took me months to realise what happened. Luckily, the police officers and detectives who handled my case believed me, but the legal system absolutely failed me. It was a "he said, she said" thing, and they brought up that I'd waited a few months to report the attack, so it couldn't have been "that bad", I didn't "fight back" and that I was the one who'd taken him home in the first place. They said that it would "ruin his life" without any respect for how it ruined mine.

Last time I was assaulted, I had to call my therapist to know if it was assault. She pointed out that every step of the way I repeatedly told him no and said that I wasn’t ready. I even moved his hands and repeated where I told him I didn’t want to be touched, something I’d made clear before we’d started making out. And I still wasn’t sure if I was assaulted or if I’d somehow been asking for it or wanted it somehow. Afterwards, he told me that the only reason I didn’t enjoy it was because I didn’t let myself. And I was going to be alone because I’m cynical.
I also had a friend who was raped several times by her husband and had no idea until I pointed it out.
Even when it’s clear on the outside, it’s not on the inside. I’m sure that if you’d asked him, he would tell you that everything was consensual I just took some convincing because I’m cynical. The Me too movement is about learning what consent is.

Sexual Assault usually isn’t black and white. Charges are extremely hard to get and even harder to win. The offender will claim that it was consensual and the victim will have to testify to a lawyer that’s going to imply that they are promiscuous and wanted it. Rapists know what consent is, they're selective with who and when they rape. They're predators so they pick up insecurity and passivity and they pick up on trauma (child abuse victims are are much more likely to be raped). This is why MeToo has been almost completely ineffective in preventing rape (rape rates have gone up since it).

The best way to explain the "freeze" part in fight, flight, or freeze: when a deer stops in the middle of the road, it is not consensually getting hit by a car. It is standing completely still bc it thinks a predator has their eyes on it. If it stays completely still, the predator might just go away.... or they might hit the deer bc they are actually an oncoming car.

How about the fact that Jane Doe 3 moved to New York months after that, and invited Masterson out to meet her New Friends, then went back to his hotel room and had consensual sex again? The False Accusations INSTANTLY STOPPED when my attorney sent the evidence that everything she was saying was a lie to the President of the Most Prestigious Medical School in the United States, which is located on the East Coast. He sent it there because this woman had completed an internship there, and her sister is a professor and researcher there. The evidence were phone records of hundreds of calls she’d made to my phone over the course of 4 years, loving emails she’d sent me over the course of 4 years, beautiful hand-written letters she’d mailed to me, which included poetry she’d written to me, as well as the existence of a naked photo she’d texted me that I never requested. She texted me that photo when she was 26. @@wildmercuryfilms I’m assuming you are not a psychologist and obviously have a confirmation bias here. I am very sorry that happened to you and rest assured I am not someone who chants believe all women, and I have been this way since before the depp trial. I do fully accept that there are plenty of women who will make false allegations for any variety of reasons knowing that the propensity of our society is to believe them, it will ruin the person they accuse and even when vindicated that person will always carry the stigma of that accusation. There is however no one way that a “real victim” acts. Think of all the people (women and men) who stay in very abusive relationships and all the reasons they do so.
In this case you do also have to include the issue of cult mentality. You mention you know nothing of Scientology - so let me ask you how your experience would change if your trusted religious organization taught you that the false accusation was YOUR fault, that you did something (even in a past life) that meant you deserved to be falsely accused, have your name and reputation dragged through the mud and due to years or even a lifetime of conditioning YOU BELIEVED THEM. How would your reaction change if you knew that if you rocked the boat you would be excommunicated, your family would disconnect from you, you would be sent to the world with nothing - no education, qualifications, work history. Look into Scientology - even those who left don’t act “normal” they don’t react “normally”. Think of it in another way - fundamentalist Mormon polygamists - how would someone assaulted in the FDA react? What would be normal behaviour for them. Culture is so important to how a person will react to various stimuli, what they will accept and what they won’t.
I am not making any statement to the guilt or innocence of masterson. I’m not on the jury and I have not heard the evidence in any non bias way. All I am saying is the actions you describe as being 100% not how an assault victim would act is incorrect. There is a lot of context required to decide if it is or is not. In your case you have all that context because you lived it. In this case we do not have that context to be able to say what behaviour is and is not “Normal”.
I am glad you were able to unwind the allegations lodged against you and feel strongly that false allegations should be prosecuted (not “not guilty” which simply means there is reasonable doubt or that no one can be sure one way or another but actually false beyond a reasonable doubt where evidence proves innocence). We do also need to change the dialogue from believe all women/victims to respect all allegations and investigate to the fullest conclusion. Innocent until proven guilty needs to underpin any fair justice system and as there has been no verdict in this case I can offer opinion but masterson has to remain not guilty until found otherwise by a jury. Obviously given the deadlock there is more than what we have been reported at play but it is blind to unequivocally state how a true victim would or would not act.

Your argument about a woman seeing him again after the SA means nothing. Just look at any abusive relationship with an SA element. It is not uncommon for victims to go back in one way or another. Maybe instead of commenting the same things over and over you should read a bit more of other people's experiences & explanations.
You need to listen to victims/survivors. Plenty of them are trying to explain this to you, myself included. They have a better understanding of the behavior that clearly doesn't make sense to you. And it is incredibly complex and I understand why a lot of it doesn't make sense from the outside. @@wildmercuryfilms I agree. The drugging allegations came much later, too (because otherwise the statute of limitations applies). There was an anti- Scientology TV show in production, and the host of that show has a personal vendetta with Masterson, and when producers started knocking on doors, that's when the allegations started. They were all involved with the television show, and compared stories even though the police told them not to. It's complicated because of Scientology being notoriously ruthless and unethical in the court room. Another thing that nobody gets, is (knowing a whole pack of Scientologists personally), those people are constantly reporting each other to church leaders as a form of procedural harassment when they have petty squabbles. They can cause you a LOT of grief that way with no repercussions. Something to think about. R*pe is hard to prove unless you leave the scene in an ambulance, and the witness statements here are highly suspect. I don't think there's enough here, but that's no guarantee that he won't be convicted. It'll be interesting to see what the jury thinks.

As someone who has not only been held up at gun point but also sexualy assaulted I can confirm the "freeze" response. No matter how you think you will react to a situation and go wild west style and shoot them..... that is all in your head until you live through it. There is nothing you can do to accurately simulate these situations prior 😒 and thus you don't know how you really will handle things until it happens. First experience was being held up at gun point while at work when I was a high school student. I was beyond unprepared despite other situations of violence I had face in the past. The sexual assault happened in college and at first I tried to fight back until I noticed their state of mind (or lack their of) knowing first hand this person had a past of being extremely violent while *blacked out* intoxicated ment my life was at risk if I fought back. This person had been found guilty of attempted murder in the past so in the end I eventually froze to protect my life in hopes less physically harm. Many people ask if I went to the cops..... do I look stupid 🤣? Seriously going to the cops in my area, state okay major of the country will result in only more trauma, zero justice and your reputation will be dragged through the mud. In short all hurt and no gain! Going to the cops is far more traumatizing than staying silent....slowly self healing. I am alarmed that this many women were willing to be dragged through that shit to come forward 😱 and that suggests that there are many more victims could be out there 🤨.

It’s often experienced with a sense of disbelief that something so horrible is happening. Some have even claimed to have out of body experiences during their tragic experience that caused them to freeze.
The host was only ever taught about Flight or Fight because those are the only two strategies that have a probability of survival

Also they are already considering the situation 'assault' or 'something horrible' in this situation. I can understand freezing after saying no or stop or fighting back, but if you're conscious and aware and in the middle of being physically intimate with someone it's weird to just stop communicating..

There's actually four trauma responses: fight, flight, freeze, or fawn - where you try to manage the threat by people-pleasing and catering to their needs.

    • @CaseyP
      @CaseyP Рік тому

The fourth is not widely accepted since it's a social construct (humans) and can be integrated into the freeze reaction aka not appears as a threat

uh, so how is possible to differentiate between fawning and consenting? Or can fawning only be differentiated after the fact?

Sadly there's a lot of poor souls that are not "CLEAR" as to what slavery looks like, so they were put on a ship " called the SEA ORG" to make it clear to them who's really in charge 😢 sad but also 😁 true.

my fave ex-scientologist that covers scientology news is Aaron Smith-Levin in Clearwater. he actually ran for city council but scientology ran a smear campaign against him bc he's an ex-member, and bc they have such a grip on the city of Clearwater. he makes a lot of videos that dispel the myths that scientology creates about itself, like just how many members they actually have. he's also on the board of The Aftermath Foundation that helps members get out of scientology. i highly recommend his channel, Growing Up in Scientology!

So he didn't kidnap any of them, they all went to his house voluntarly for what? They liked him, wanted to go there for him, had sex with him, didn't the next day call police, waited years later, then decided to want money first, then have him locked up? This seems so wrong, he could do so much time for this.

Every video I’ve come across concerning this case spend majority of the time talking about Scientology. Can someone please tell me what actual physical evidence was used to confirm a conviction?

    • @businesswalks8301
      @businesswalks8301 6 місяців тому +1

there is none. you don't get it. it's clearly a concerted effort to undermine the law. it's ALL about money. it's all about disregarding rights. it's all about lawyers having new ways to make money by treating women like children who can retroactively re-neg consent. interesting huh?

I thought this video was going to be about the case. You didn’t cover hardly anything other than Scientology. I want to know what evidence was presented other than he said/ she said. That’s an awful long time to come fwd. wondering how much they’ll be seeking in the civil suit 🤔

Right?! And it took nearly 5 minutes just for her to actually get to the point and it wasn't even about Danny's crimes.

Jane Doe 2 didn't realize Danny's action was rape until her husband told her. The reason is that she was a long time scientologist and scientology teaches that there is no such thing as rape. If a woman is treated that way (raped) it is because she brought it on herself.

My mom has been rewatching That 70s Show for background noise, (yes she knows about Danny Masterson and Wilmer Valderrama) and a lot of their jokes are super disgusting and didn't age well. Especially Fez's character. 🤢 Thank you for covering this. I'll show it to my mom later!
