  • It has been a half a year or more since I had the old "A" John Deere going. This is a cold start of me starting it by hand

    Hand start is definately the way to go, never have to worry about a dead battery. Beautiful tractor

    This is like the one we had when I was a young girl. I decided that I could drive it, so while my daddy was gone one day, I got it started and promptly drove it over an embankment and into the creek. I could have gotten it out, maybe, but it was in some sand and I was scared. my mother was furious, but my daddy was very proud of me. Needless to say, I didn't do it again! (For a while anyway!) Thank you for showing this! I sure do miss my John Deere! Lisa Souders Coe

    Wow good for you to keep your parents A John Deere! Very nice tractor! We had one growing up on the farm. It had a front bounced buzz saw! Ours had a full rims.

    What a beautiful John Deere. My neighbors had one of those, but theirs had a hand crank. The grandfather was a auto mechanic he could fix anything. He showed us how to start it with the hand crank and warned us how to hold the crank handle in your hand. You never wrap your thumb around the handle in case it kicked back. They didn't start it much with the crank unless the battery was dead. It had a starter added to it. I can't believe how easy it started spinning the flywheel.

      Yeah If you have a nice hot spark with good fuel and compression they start pretty fast. Your right hand starting is a little on the dangerous side. Must be careful.

    That is a smooth running two cylinder. Take pride in your deere that is a nice tractor and it's not built for speed so don't be so timid about it and show it off a bit. Live a little! Nothing runs like a deere!

    Great tractor. I grew up on a farm in PA and that same model, 1939 A, was our family farm tractor for years. Same round spoked rear wheels, same styled hood, but no rear lift. Thanks for sharing this, it brings back lots of 50-year-old memories for me. If you ever want to sell it, hit me up!

      Glad it brought back memories for you! That's not the first time I've heard that. I got this tractor when I was around 8 years old. Now 30 years later I don't think I'll ever get rid of her😂

      @@Jason1Pa Thank you for caring so much for this old treasure. How many kids today can say they have ever seen one of these unstopable monsters. They are like steam locomotives - rare and beautiful old machines to be worked and treasured.

    Dad started farming in 1946 with a 1936 a. In 1951 he bought a 1950 g. He used a 2 row cultivater.front mount. The angled plate above your front tires is the.bottom mount. The 2 bolts on top are the other mount.

    • @Jason1Pa
      @Jason1Pa  2 роки тому

      Yes I know the plate is for cultivators. Even though I don't have them I just left the plate on. Now that it's been on there so long it would look weird to me if I took it off so I just leave it be. Acts as a nice seat to lean on too. 😆

    I think it's a very nice tractor to! I like the spinning the fly wheel to start it much, much better than cranking it! My imagination and the thought of the crank hitting my wrist or legs made me afraid of cranking, No one notices or cares that you think the hood needs more work, it looks great and runs great!

    When I was a kid we farmed with a 1938 A that my grandfather bought brand new in 1939. We used it up til the mid 80's and dad took it down to the very last screw and completely rebuilt it. Our shop looked like a John Deere grave yard because dad bought like six old A's for parts.

    That was quite a start - Two flips and it was trying to light off. Amazing machines - a credit to JD engineering and the sturdy reliability of the engines these machines had. My neighbor had one, solid rim wheels, though. I had started it at age 10 while he was away and scared the wits out of me - what to do now? Stop it! which I did. Take care of your beautiful machine. Yes, do a restoration of the metal. This is a useful piece of equipment, even today. How about your kids riding on it, learning to be a man when they have their first start - and many more there-after. Thanks for the wonderful show. Take care of the precious machine. It needs a good Grandson to take care of it in it's old age.

    Thank you so much for the sub, yes she is a really nice original we are not going to restore her. She has ran like that from day one, with a few new gaskets, a cleaned and set up carb and a few other things. I love your hand start A that thing is awesome.

      @Jason1Pa  9 років тому

      Thanks a bunch man!! Its fun to mess around with. I wouldnt paint your 60 either. What I see a lot of people do with all original tractors like yours is to spray it down with WD-40 and wipe it down. Not only does it protect it from moisture,but it kind of gives it a nice shine as well. Kind of like face lift.. LOL Where are you from??

      I am from England about 4 hours away from London and 1 hour away from Liverpool if you know where that is.I live in a village called Mawdesley. Me and my dad are thinking of bying a coat for it to protect it and keep the patina, but we dont want a shine to it, but great tip because i do have a old lawn mower that could do with a spray. Also i am posting a vid probs tomorrow of me and my dad driving a saw bench with the 60.

      Wow that is great to see the old John Deere 60 over in England!! I'm from the United States. Live in the state of Pennsylvania. Closest large city would be to me would be Pittsburgh

      @relviikzoor9921 9 років тому

      I know there's not a lot as you can imagine in England all Massey Ferguson and Fords, so when we turn up to a steam fair with one it turns some heads. We are thinking of getting a unstlyed model A on skeletons because me and my dad think they look really old and awesome. Also check out a site if you haven't already called happy old iron its were we found or 60 from its awesome.

      That website is GREAT!! I looked at a lot of it. I would love to be there!! I would like a unstyled John Deere on steel wheels as well.. I don't see a lot of them anymore here. Maybe they are to difficult to transport to shows. Also a lot of antique tractors and cars seem to be leaving our country and going to new homes all around the world

  • @Jason1Pa
    @Jason1Pa  11 років тому

    I try to run mine as much as possable too. With our winters however that can be difficult. thats why i put the oil down the cylinders,hook batteries up to maintainers,and block the back end up a little if the tires have liquid in them. I don't like to put all that weight on them and have flat spots in he Spring. It also could damage the tire after a while

    You are too hard on yourself. The tractor looks and sounds great. I'd just give it general service and clean it up and have fun with it. It doesn't have to go fast to run like a Deere. :) I'd love to have one like this. All I have are the scale model "toy" ones. This would be more fun.

    I have been told the 39s did not have the letter "A" on the grills. Yet when I sanded mine down to the original paint the A was there. It had been repainted, so it had two layers of the letter A. So I am not sure who to believe. You have a nice tractor there.

      it was on seat frame just like the unstyled A

    • @jasonmurawski5877
      @jasonmurawski5877 2 роки тому

      The A sticker was only added on the later styled tractors. These early styled and unstyled had a decal going up the seat post that said “model A”
