  • Are you making training choices based on your desire to be a better, stronger, more resilient athlete? Or are you deciding when, how, and if you should train based on whether or not it might help you meet an aesthetic goal? I am addressing this issue for out HA/OTS community, including how this might lead to overtraining syndrome, examples we might see in our everyday lives, and why making bad choices is hard to avoid in our culture. Come with me "off road" for a short walk in the hills of Portofino while we get into all of it!

    This is exactly what I needed to hear today. My therapist and I were discussing this topic yesterday and yet still today having no interest or desire I got out of bed and trained and now I’m starting to realize that was probably the biggest mistake thank you for sharing any other tips would be greatly appreciated

      Getting to the point where you can recognize that your habits are contrary to your goals is a BIG indicator that you are ready to make some major changes. My biggest tip for people at this beginning stage is to pay attention to that inner voice. We have been taught that these thoughts should be ignored and overcome...like they are some kind of impediment! On the contrary...we have to cultivate that intuition and learn to stop and listen :)

    Loved listening to this. I am training for my first Ultra and have really been listening to you more (going back to old vids as well) just to ensure I am doing the right thing and doing it for the right reasons! I need to hear you often just to ensure I have my senses knocked into me all the time and listen to my body when I need rest. At some point the program states long running days consecutively...but I will do what I can! I have already decided that I will be walking parts of the 50km "race". I'm not doing it for time or win, just to enjoy the crowd after this pandemic!

      @@jillcolangelopsych Listened to that twice already! Loved it and listen when I'm getting ready in the morning after my strength session to counter the "push harder" message that is all around me and in my head! Thank you for being here!

    Totally agree. 💯I Would also say that for me, training for athletics feels much better and is mentally fulfilling. I’d definitely not feel good leaving the gym if I spend the last hour or so looking in the mirror and only caring about my ascetics and wanting to change it. I’m happy that my training makes me feel strong, happy and capable. I appreciate what our bodies can do, any body can do, no matter what size or body fat😅

    What if your identity is tied to that aesthetic goal and you don’t have anything else? Like it’s your only purpose and no matter how sad this is, it’s the truth?

      There is no possible way that any single variable can define a person, no matter how strongly you identify with that variable. Are you a friend, sister, daughter, partner, granddaughter? Do you have preferences, hobbies, likes, dreams? Do you pray, meditate, draw, write, like music, sing, dance? Are you a human in this world who is capable of love, empathy, care? It is impossible for you to say NO to every one of these things and therefore, there is more to you than you think. I believe it! Now it is YOU who has to believe...

    Hi question! I was an intensive highschool rower for all of last year (5 days a week 2 hours a day), and lost my period about 5 months in. I still have not gotten it back for 10 months now and don’t know what to do. None of my other rowing friends ever lost their period so I’m confused. Any advice? Thank you!!

      You can email me jillacolangelo@gmail.com and I can give you more info...it's quite hard to fit the possibilities into a message here! But, everyone is individual and no two bodies will react the same way to the same combination of diet and exercise.

    Hey I am currently trying to get my period back (I’m having some signs!!) and I was wondering why I haven’t gotten my hunger cues back? I restored my weight but because I’m 14 I’m still growing and now trying to catch up so I have to keep gaining to catch up. Why haven’t I gotten them and how to I get them back? Does it have to do with not getting a period?

    This couldn't have come at a better time. After 5 years of overtraining and underfuelling for triathlon i am determined to get better and train to actually perform well, not just for my rules and for looks. I have a period and a fairly healthy weight but still feel so weak and ill, what does this mean?

    • @jillcolangelopsych
      @jillcolangelopsych  3 роки тому

      The fact that you are watching this tells me that you know that you are likely still training too much or eating too little (or some combination of those!). Getting a period back is an excellent indicator of the body physically recovering, but the mind takes quite a bit longer. Feeling weak and ill is a definite sign that improvements can and should be made. Don't ignore what your body is trying to tell you! If you have questions, go ahead and email me: acaseofthejills@gmail.com :)
