    Always hated this storyline, it never really went anywhere and felt like a cheap drama.
    More annoying was his audacity to question Cora's loyalty to him when he literally cheated on her. Ugh.

      I never believed in this story line ,it was too out of character for the Earl, as he had previously been portrayed as an honourable man.

      I actually think the show would’ve been better overall, especially more realistic about the war’s aftermath, if Matthew had indeed remained in need of the wheelchair. His ability to reproduce might still have returned, but not his ability to walk. This would’ve given spoiled brat Mary a much-needed wake-up call and forced her to accept that such an injury, such an “imperfection,” actually did not make her love Matthew any less. It would’ve triggered some amazing character development on her part.

      I never stop rewatching it!! 😂 Truly! It’s ruined all other tv shows for me. But I did have to breakdown and watch Julian Fellows’ other series about America during basically the same era, “The Guilded Age”. It was nothing like DA … maybe from his own loyalty towards the UK. It was ok, but nothing like DA. Maybe I like England better than America too (even though I’m from the USA). He made England appear so much classier, not to mention their accents. 😅
      And then … Matthew was there! 🥰. lol

      If you notice, before this scene you could tell they were at a point in their marriage where he was rather being “ignored” by Cora and at the same time repulsed by her insensitivity towards first, Mr Bates being accused of murder and second, wanting to kick Matthew out to go home because he’s in the way of Lady Mary’s marriage. Believe me, I’m not excusing Robert for this but he was at a very vulnerable state in his life and it was obvious he was immediately attracted to her and she gave him the interest he needed from his wife.

    Well, Jane got her lad into the grammar school & a nice little set-up for financial assistance in the future if memory serves me correctly - I like how it was left ambiguously as to whether that was her plan all along! 😏
    As for Robert, choosing to snog the maid whilst his wife was at death's door instead of keeping vigil at her bedside speaks to his moral character, or lack thereof. Cora was loyal despite the attentions of Mr Bricker, & was definitely by HIS side when he told her he'd bankrupted them & when he sprayed his ulcer across the dinner table! 🤭 He literally never deserved her!

    • @SummerRain368
      @SummerRain368 4 місяці тому +1

      Ok I’ve just mentioned this in a previous comment on someone’s post, but right before the flu took over, Robert was being ignored by Cora and she even said when just getting better from the flu, “we’re alright aren’t we Robert?” Between her criticizing Bates for keeping him on when he was being charged with murder and Matthew’s wedding getting in the way of Mary’s. (Remember him yelling at Cora for being so stupid? I thought that was rough!)They were in a difficult place in their marriage at that point and the maid was giving him the attention he was looking for from his unavailable wife. (Definitely not excusing him but at least they didn’t end up in bed together. I’d not be sticking up for him had that been the case!)

    While I of course disapprove of Robert cheating his wife, I do understand his point of view of things. He was a man whose love was very ill, he was worried. While this occurred the world he believed in was crumbling and he was a little lost in how to deal with everything at once. This all combined caused him to have the affair, but he learned his lesson and after this his love for Cora simply grew a lot stronger.

    She should have walked out of such a close space. This is the first time I really blame her and see what she’s up to! I could see her “wanting him” to make a move in this isolated scene.

    • @Madamoizillion
      @Madamoizillion День тому

      ??? Robert walked into the space with HER as she was doing her JOB. With the power imbalance between the two of them, your statement seems kind of awful to say such a thing and smacks of misogyny. I'm not saying Robert sexually assaulted her, but "It wouldn't have happened unless she wanted it" is such a common victim blaming technique when in reality something was forced upon the victim without their consent. Ew to your statement and I desperately hope you don't apply the same logic to real life people.

      I really didn’t like Jane either! I don’t know why … maybe she played her part too well.
      What I didn’t like about how Ethel was written was she had such high hopes for a better life (reading the movie magazines etc) and ended up in the pits for awhile! I just LOVED the little boy actors who played her son. As a baby he looked like a cutie old-fashioned Porcelain doll and as the 2 yr-old just SOOO adorable! and she did end up bettering herself even learning to cook.
