- Tragedy strikes for Carson during dinner service, as he is put under a lot of pressure to maintain the high standards of the house.
Clip From: Series 2 Episode 2: It is April 1917 and, with most of the men away at the front, Carson is finding it tough maintaining standards in the house. Robert's new valet Henry Lang has just returned from the war, but O'Brien is the only one to notice that he is not well. The suicide of a young officer prompts Isobel to suggest that they convert Downton into a convalescent hospital. Also, Mary hears that Matthew is returning.

The costume drama series, Downton Abbey, written and created by Oscar-winning writer Julian Fellowes, stars Academy Award-winner Maggie Smith as a Dowager Countess of an Edwardian English country house in 1912. The series portrays the lives of the Crawley family and the servants who work for them, in a time before the last vestige of a century’s old tradition were stripped away by World War and the modern age. The all-star cast also includes Hugh Bonneville and Elizabeth McGovern.

The way I see it, Edith’s behavior in this scene was meant to contrast with her caring for William three episodes later. These moments were meant to show her growth from caring mostly about unimportant stuff to caring for what really matters.
I think Edith’s exclamation was more because she was portrayed as a coddled middle child of an Earl. Her character quickly became integral to the caring of the injured officers as the house was turned into a convalescent home. The series may have received clap-back for the insensitive comment the character made and the writers worked quickly to change it.
This guy was about the only person O'Brien ever showed empathy for, where she didn't have an ulterior motive.
When O'Brien spoke about her brother, her favorite brother dealing with Shell Shock (PTSD) and succumbing to the ravages of war it was tender, heartbreaking and displayed a softer side to the O'Brien than we previously thought impossible. It brought home the overall storyline of WW1.
that, and the guilt she felt after the awful thing she did to Cora, were the only times when we saw something redeeming in O'Brien... usually she was so awful. Even worse than Thomas
Agree this was the only person she ever showed any sympathy. But O’Brien was the worst, way worse than Thomas. At least Thomas got his Comeuppance. O’Brien never faced any repercussion for the bad things she did. She got away with everything. I blame Cora for this. They all knew that O’Brien wasn’t nice and yet kept her around. Cora should’ve gotten rid of her when she tried to paint the cooking staff in a bad light for feeding injured veterans.
@@lxtatar7773yes, and let’s not forget it was Thomas who told her Cora was putting an advertisement for a lady’s maid. She always cares, and was loyal to Cora until she felt betrayed.
@@georgieleoboy Thomas did awful things too but he got his comeuppance (he was on the brink of losing his job, deeply unhappy, lonely, feeling unaccepted because of his sexuality, and in the end attempting to end his life). Also he did have a few good moments on the show, like when he saved Edith, got into a fight for Jimmy, or being friendly with the kids. He became kinder when he felt a bit happier. We never saw this development with O'Brien
Matthew: Still in one piece, touch wood
Robert: I never stop touching it.
What has Robert been up to?
Squandering his wife’s money
fool
…that’s just an older version of the phrase “knock on wood”
It’s ironic that this video serves an ad for Paramount+ when the show isn’t even on the platform
Edith: what about my dress.
Gurl somebody is dying right there. 😂
My father would give me Downton Abbey on DVD every year on Valentine's Day. He got to season three before he passed away. 😢
That’s such a beautiful gift
May he rest in peace ❤
I’m so sorry that you lost your father but what wonderful memories every time you watch those DVDs
😢
This life can be so very sad. May he rest in the peace of God forever, and may his kindness always bless you in every regard.
"what about my dress?" 🙄
I like Edith (in general) but sometimes she was just..... darling, it's a moment of crisis, no one cares about your dress!!
And they hardly care about her.
@@thomas4019I mean to be worth caring for, one must have a personality to care for. Before the war she was a spoilt insipid lil jealous second daughter and hardly worth a second look as compared to Mary who was the eldest, sharp wit and a dark beauty.
She developed more after the war. Then when she got dumped then lost a fiance. Then got a job
@@KoiYakultGreenTea Agree. I would just add her little sister was also way more of a looker than she.
@@thomas4019 yeah, Sybil is a free spitit and very beautiful, Mary is seen (and sees herself as) as the future of Downton, and Edith is reserved to the role of an ugly duckling. Her personality (and looks) improved a lot after she got a job and developed her own interests
@@lxtatar7773 Her personal apparel in the best of cases.
‘Touch wood’
“I never stopped touching it”
Giggity giggity goo!
😆😆😆 Well, there goes my thinking about good luck...forever.
Imagine Glen Quagmire at Downtown😂
Modern sentiment is so vulgar.
What the heck is giggity giggity goo 😂😂😂
Matthew, perhaps you shouldn't be staring at Mary like she's a steak and you're a starving wolf while your fiancee is at the same table?
😆😆
@@kosikumah7249Mary was always Matthew's great love; I don't think he ever really loved Lavinia, not truly! This was a wonderful love story and you shouldn't be making fun of it if you clearly never watched the show!
@@teresaf4454 I wasn’t the one making fun of it. I watched the show. I was only laughing because of the expression used by @jmarie9997 about the steak and the starving wolf etc. I wasn’t making fun of the situation. I’m a big fan of Downton Abbey.
@@kosikumah7249 thanks for clearing that up.
@@teresaf4454 that’s ok 🙂
Carson: *almost dying" 💀
Edith: what about my dress! 😰
Violet: 🥱
Mathew: staring at Mary😋
😂😍@@taylamackenzie3566
Almost dying? Not at all.
He would've died if it werent for coras promptness e benevolence
@@Celisar1
Lady Sybil😢
She was my favourite character
Poor Mr. Lang. 😢
he had a bad case of PTSD.
It was so sad....as a veteran myself...my heart goes out to anyone who is suffering from PTSD like that. Or Shell Shock, as it was called in those days I think.
What about my dress?
Wtf girl
These are the precious few moments of vulnerability, selflessness and sensitivity that validate O'Brien's character. There was some good in her, buried under mountains of resentment.
Sir Richard would be today's most eligible bachelor...buys a house close to your parents, protects your name, demands you to be faithful, wants a wedding date!
Just found out right now that Downton Abbey is on UA-cam😮😮…yes indeed 😊❤
It’s always Granny until…
It’s Carson, omg what’s happening to em?!! Not Carson, no!!!
Carson is such a SNOB, good acting anyway !
Carson: almost dies
Violet: 🥱
Violet had little regard or feelings toward any servants. In fact, she considered her ladie's maids leaving her due to marriage or pregnancy as their being "selfish" by not considering how that would affect her. So, yeah, Carson potentially fatal collapse would only extract a yawn from her.
@@robboyte1101she was very touched when young William died, and sympathetic to the trials of Bates, so I don't completely agree.
@@lisbetsoda4874 I get your point, and I stand mostly corrected. I'd still liken that to the effect of the War and its immediate aftermath. Plus, those were extraordinary circumstances that she hadn't encountered before, I'm sure. In later times, she reverted back to her original behaviors.
I miss being able to watch this. I loved this show.
It's on Netflix now
@@Aceuvnone I don't have Internet in my home.
I 2nd that😢
Una delle più belle serie televisive, scoperta tardi,ma amata tanto❤❤❤
Io la sto guardando adesso, una serie assolutamente meravigliosa .... davvero ❤ ❤ ❤
SO this is the scene I keep reading about on Reddit threads. Yes, I've seen the series but not nearly as much as my mother who watches her DVDs nonstop. But Edith your bulter having a heart attack! Screw the dress!
Get your mother other DVDs.
@@zyxw2024 I already got her the entire series and movies in a box set because she'd watched them so much she permently damaged the DVDS.
And since she never leaves her apartmetn unlless it to take me or my twin to appointments she pretty always watching them and Call the Midwife.
She didn't have any actual TV so she always watching them because she can't watch anything lese.
it is such a time frame that all memorable characters are still in the show🥲
the Dowager Countess has to be 120. but we do love her.
NO MORE FUCKING ADS!!!
How is it a tragedy? Carson will be fine. Misfortune maybe, or scary moment
Love 💕 this show
😐 💙
The service was actually going well until Carson messed it up by getting sick.
