- Christmas at Downton Abbey is full of traditions that let everyone enjoy the festive cheer. The Crawley family give their thanks back to the staff, despite Sir Richard Carlisle critiques, along with festive games, gift giving, and lavish dinners for all.
Clip From: Series 2 Episode 9: It is now Christmas, 1919, just a little over a year since the end of WWI. The Crawley family intend to make it a lavish affair for themselves and their guests, even though the arrest of John Bates, for the murder of his wife, Vera, causes a lot of tension in the household as everyone awaits the outcome of his trial, especially his new wife, Anna. Problems are brewing for Violet as she is more than a little unsure of her daughter, Rosamund's new beau, who seems almost a little too good to be true and strife continues for Lady Mary and Sir Richard after yet another confrontation between the two.

The costume drama series, Downton Abbey, written and created by Oscar-winning writer Julian Fellowes, stars Academy Award-winner Maggie Smith as a Dowager Countess of an Edwardian English country house in 1912. The series portrays the lives of the Crawley family and the servants who work for them, in a time before the last vestige of a century’s old tradition were stripped away by World War and the modern age. The all-star cast also includes Hugh Bonneville and Elizabeth McGovern.

The scene with the family playing "the game" AKA charades is one of my favorites. it's nice that they see some normalcy after the war that changes nearly every thing for them.
This is my favourite episode from the entire series. I absolutely love it. Downton Abbey is the best ♥️

I think I've seen the episode at least twice, and my daughter gave me a book on the various characters, I guess I'll get my black card revoked. I just love this series.

Absolutely not! I saw a bunch of clips of Maggie Smith's zingers as the dowager instantly set out to watch this show and watched it several times. Have all the DVDs and movies

Such a historical accuracy.... as spiritism knew a big growth after WW1, with sad people trying to communicate with all the dead men at war, husbands, sons, brothers... And then raising curiosity and being fashionable.

I played this game with a boy who had no confidence. He asked if he would pass a test. I opened my eyes and he was inching toward no so I went toward yes. I hope that gave him enough confidence so he studied for his test.
