He reproached his friend for such heinous act but his friend said he was the one the woman really loves and that the husband should concede. Enraged, the husband challenged his best friend to a pistol duel in the living room and the friend accepted. Somehow, by the time they entered the living room they had calmed down and decided that it was not necessary to destroy their long term friendship over this. So they discussed and reached an agreement that they would each fire a shot into the ceiling and lay down on the floor. When the woman come to them, the first person she went to check would be the one she loves, and the other one should concede. When the woman heard the gun shots she rushed to the living room, stood at the entrance and saw both men laying there motionless. She then rushed back to the bedroom, stood in front of the closet and said,"Honey, you can come out now. They are both dead!"

Confederate Civil War soldier Sam Watkins wrote in his book "Company Aytch" of a duel he witnessed during the war. He described the scene as the Confederate and Federal armies were camped on opposite banks of a fairly short river. Conversations between the two sides were common and normally friendly, but a Union soldier began to mock the president of the Confederacy decision of removing a beloved General of command and replacing him with a man of much less popularity. Soon a heated argument broke out between the Union soldier and a man who was with Sam at the time, the Confederates calling him a liar without honor. Eventually, a duel was agreed upon, if both sides agreed to let the situation be played out between only the 2 men without any other interference. The 2 men had stepped out into the open, each armed with their rifles (which were pretty much the exact same) and waited for the command to begin. Once the order of "FIRE!" was shouted, both men began to fire away. Both men were able to load and shoot 7 times before the Federal soldier shot the Confederate in the chest and hitting the man heart, killing him instantly. irl, most people who got shot back then didn't die quickly. Bullets were very low velocity and people who got shot usually lingered around suffering before they finally died an agonizing death from sepsis or internal hemorrhage.
Exactly, in some cases, both of them died later. Even an already dying guy could shoot his opponent back, and make him expire the next day.... It was believed that if you still had the right to shoot, you were supposed to take your opponent with you. Many duelists even made up their minds to resolutely respond with fire without hesitation, to not be confused in the event of suffering their own agony after being hit....
@@DennisNeijmeijer Sure, custom dictated that you should return fire as long as you still had the right to shoot and were still able to aim at the opponent... At short distances, even those who were already dying sometimes hit their opponents in the last seconds.
There was a duel in Paris in about 1955 with swords . I remember reading it in a French newspaper . No one was killed, but one had his arm sliced open .
Duels happen all the time, I knew a man who fought 2 duels in the 1970s, killing his opponent both times. The district attorney charged him with 1st degree murder both times, and the jury found him not guilty because his opponent had a gun and was shooting at him. I've always wondered if the d.a. was so consumed with hate that he didn't realize he couldn't get a conviction or really approved of the result that he deliberately over charged so the defendant would walk.had the charge been dueling there would have been no chance of being acquitted.
Before WWII in Europe, duels were tolerated especially among military officers.... Military courts were very lenient in these matters. In the majority of duels, however, nobody was killed. Only sometimes one of the guys was killed or mortally wounded....And, in rare cases, both guys: having already been fatally hit, it was difficult to hit the opponent in response (although being still able to aim the target, you could try to reciprocate, without any embarrassment)
> Catches wife talking with another man > challenges to a duel, (he refuses) > proceed to beat him until he accepts. > Fatally shoots him > “I’m off to france” refuses to elaborate > Leaves
I'm amazed at the lack of repercussions that would accompany these duels. Didn't Andrew Jackson infamously shoot and kill Charles Dickinson in a duel in 1806, and then win the presidency in 1829?
@@Bluebelle51 It's possible to be both. From what little I know of Andrew Jackson's politics, many of his views and policies aged poorly and were controversial and vilified even in their time. But I think everyone from that era acknowledges he was an absolute force of nature and had an insane level of character, personality, will, and drive, to the point where he as a figure absolutely dominated US political discussion for a generation (hence the phrase "Jacksonian"). He was a man of exceptional capacity and achievement, even if he used that capacity to poor ends.
"A code of honor, by which all were called upon, nay, compelled to measure their actions, unless the individual was prepared to sacrifice all that made his life worth having"
You're mistaking duels for attempted murders and murders. If the aggrieved party in the modern scenario was told he could enter a small room with his antagonist, both armed with pistols, neither party leaving until both had a fair turn at the other, I doubt he'd be as keen.
@@synchc you would be surprised. The ghettos very much operates like old England here... except that since violence is harshly punished, it's faster, random, and takes the form of urban guerilla warfare. But honor.... yeah, street honor is a real thing. I came from that environment. If you don't fight back, people see you as weak... a target to be taken advantage of. I think the elegant smallsword would be the best weapon for defending your life in a duel (or, at least, for selling it costly if you were fatally stabbed).
You would have to be a man of true conviction to stand your ground in a duel especially knowing likelihood of a slow, agonizing death. That said I believe living as an honest man would be the better measure.

We make the best rings. Duel me.
irl, most people who got shot back then didn't die quickly. Bullets were very low velocity and people who got shot usually lingered around suffering before they finally died an agonizing death from sepsis or internal hemorrhage.
As was tradition
Was your comment made to refute what happened in the story? Because that's exactly what happened to the guy.
Nice jury nullification! Not even leaving the jury box just going 'nope, not happening'
Duels happen all the time, I knew a man who fought 2 duels in the 1970s, killing his opponent both times. The district attorney charged him with 1st degree murder both times, and the jury found him not guilty because his opponent had a gun and was shooting at him. I've always wondered if the d.a. was so consumed with hate that he didn't realize he couldn't get a conviction or really approved of the result that he deliberately over charged so the defendant would walk.had the charge been dueling there would have been no chance of being acquitted.
best man cooled opponent’s balls
Before WWII in Europe, duels were tolerated especially among military officers.... Military courts were very lenient in these matters. In the majority of duels, however, nobody was killed. Only sometimes one of the guys was killed or mortally wounded....And, in rare cases, both guys: having already been fatally hit, it was difficult to hit the opponent in response (although being still able to aim the target, you could try to reciprocate, without any embarrassment)
I can already tell this one is going to be a banger.
> Catches wife talking with another man
> challenges to a duel, (he refuses)
> proceed to beat him until he accepts.
> Fatally shoots him
> “I’m off to france” refuses to elaborate

Duels still exist today in America. Their usually done in run down neighborhoods with glock switches and Dracos.
You're mistaking duels for attempted murders and murders. If the aggrieved party in the modern scenario was told he could enter a small room with his antagonist, both armed with pistols, neither party leaving until both had a fair turn at the other, I doubt he'd be as keen.
@@synchc You write well.
You then have two choices: fight back, violently, or stay in the house the rest of your life.
