Veerasamy takes in washing for his living. He lives in a small village in southern India where all the inhabitants are Dalits - outcasts or 'Untouchables' as they're known in India. But even among the dalits, there are divisions, and Veerasamy belongs to the lowest scale of the hierarchy. The only payment he receives for back-breaking work, washing and steaming and drying the laundry of the village's 19 families, is the left-overs from their meals to feed his small family.

Who the hell has the right too label another human an "untouchable" ?
WOW .......RELIGION ........ ONE OF THE STRONGEST WEAPONS OF OPPRESSION
The man on the video spoke with great wisdom. If he was treated equally he would be a great leader.
This is a very wretched situation, very sad indeed, there are many beautiful things about Indian culture but this is one of the saddest things of human kind...
In Finland we have an alternate system to divide people into classes in Finland. We call it Money.
There is mobility in your country's system, but there is no mobility in Hindus caste system.
Horrendous, cannot believe this is allowed to happen :(
I like the kid...looks bright. He doesn't deserve being poor...
This is too heart-wrenching. and to complain about my work evryday. sighh
The only reason I am watching this is because I have a quiz on it for class....Who would watch this for fun....Geeee
very depressing to watch. just comes to show, if you have it rough, there's always someone out there who's got it worse.
I really hate how the stupid priest was completely indifferent to his fellow human beings suffering. The caste system is a method of maintaining control that should be dissolved. I would love to help the plight of the dalits.
I'm not Hindu but every religion in India still believes in the caste system, Christians, Muslims and Sikhs also do caste discrimination. It's just so ingrained there.
Surely this video should inspire responses about India and the treatment of the DALITS!
Hinduism is not the problem. It is ancient cultural prejudice. Jai Mata Di!
minor correction... Bishop Tutu is not a Catholic. He is an Anglican (aka.. episcopalian). but ultimately his appeal is human, it comes from the heart.
I hope that priest comes back as a washer man in his next life
shit gatherer would be better!
that priest is pissing me off. it's easy to be happy about the caste system when you're on top of the privileged and you don't give a crap about how the unprivileged are treated.
it still puzzles me that people can treat other humans in that manner !!! Shameful !!!
Couldn't agree more!
NObody ever has the right to look down on people. If you want to help, help them the right way, not helping them in a way making them as your slaves. Poor people.

Im not a Hindu but I still don't thinkpeople should blame the religion Hinduism. I think that this problem came from rich upper class people distorting the religion to better serve themselves. This same situation has happend in many other places not just India.
omg this is so sad. it even made me cry so many innocent people suffer. they are humans they shouldnt suffer like they do .
Shame on those ppl who use religion to make ppl live like slaves...
we are all human!!!! stop this discrimination!!!!
All babies, Dalits or not, are born free and are sacred. The Dalits people are victims of a crazy, inhumane system.
Nobody was or is born untouchable, absolutely nobody wherever. Whoever invented that stupid caste system was suffering from a form of seriously dangerous schizophrenia. All human beings have the same human rights. Veerasamy is a better human being than some so called educated ego tripper who calls him, or whoever else, an untouchable. I warmly greet and embrace all Dalits!
Shame for humanity
enducation is the only thing can save the Dalits, let they know that they are no the same human being like others and have self respection , then , united together to end the discrimination~
Hope the Indian people can make big progress in their old social system .
Most of the Dalits are oppressed ....especially nowadays because of lack of "employabale" education and lack of land ownership......Instead of reservation in Universities (or along with it), the govt should give them
"enterpreneurship courrses" and easy bank loans/monitory aid.......
there is hope for them...loads of Indians are working to stop this kind of discrimination.
And one last note, Hinduism doesn't support a caste system anymore. Just like most countries don't support slavery. It is the choice of the people living in the country to act that way not the religion itself. If somebody told you that you were now to become a slave you wouldn't do it. Well it's not like that in India. The poverty of the poor people restrict them from seeking opportunities. The religion of Hinduism gives people hope that maybe in their next life they will lead a better life.
thats good man!!! Great to hear!!! Lets get rid of this stupid caste system!!!!!!!!
LONG LIVE EQUALITY!!!!!!!!!!
they need a revolution!!!!
Very good eye opening video.
Caste system has to do nothing with religion. It's with society. For perfection.
That cast system is disgusting. We should open gun shops there. :-)
In Kerala, lower-caste people are allowed to enter the temples. This video was taken in Tamilnadu
Our British ancestors did try and civilize the nightmare which is called India/Pakistan/Bagladesh.
so sad I hope the caste system and inequity are vanished nowadays
Sikh Buddhist alliance can make a huge impact on India Indians dont need religions based on imperialism...Buddhists and sikhs wants peace and social harmony and can riise India and its people above all this differences..Sikhs and Buddhists will educate every indian to respect his people as he respect his familiy and belive in unity..
wow this priest is somethin else u know.
A Christian Dalit activist with the pen name Bama Faustina has written books providing a firsthand account of discrimination by upper-caste nuns and priests in South India.
Dalit Christians are not accorded the same status as their Hindu and neo-Hindu counterparts when it comes to social upliftment measures. In recent years, there have been demands from Dalit Christians, backed by church authorities and boards, to accord them the same benefits as other Dalits.
They need to dismantle that temple stone by stone and then break the stone into little little pieces so that not even the memory of that temple remains to haunt anyone.
Stupid and cruel mentality. We are all human beings, we bleed, we feel happy, sad, hurt. All humans experienced the same.
Gandhi fought for all people.s dignity - against apartheit - a great example for all
This documentary is both enlightining and worrisome. The images and stories shown tells us that despite the fact that India is among the fastest growing economies of the developing world, the social systems within the country resemble that of primtive pre feudal societies.
i feel bad for these ppls...they should find better job
isto é escravidaõ!vamos acabar com isto.Povo ergue sua cabeças e luta pelos seus direito no mundo!
There are now untouchables that are members of parliament, so things are evolving.
The Buddha worked to rid India of the caste system, too bad India turned its back on Buddhism.
This makes me wish I had billions of dollars so I could make all these Dalit families millionaires and they could finally rest and live comfortably.
they still have bride burning and witch burning in India.
caste system is related to the Indian society, and not Hinduism (as is evident by presence of caste among Indian Christians and Muslims).Across India, many Christian communities still follow the caste system. Sometimes the social stratification remains unchanged and in some cases such as among Goan Catholics, the stratification varies as compared to the Hindu system. Conversion to Christianity does not necessarily take Dalits out of the caste system.
so? they can change there status in life
what is the name of the song that plays in this?
JUST BE AN HUMAN!! That's It
i exactly know how u people feel.
im from india and belong to dalit caste.
my grandfather was a labour, my father received proper education and is workin in a government firm.
The indian government is tryin its best to eradicate the caste discrimination but its really hard coz it exist from 400 BC during the king's rule.
But the this reducing slowly, it is caused by these private contractors, they force these people by payin them in advance now they owe them.
I can't believe this!!!
So true.. and the Hindus go about saying that the Muslims are less of them; well Indians have world wonder because of the Muslims...
This is 100% true thanks for the presenting this video ..still this media has to cover a lot.... in India Dalits are branded as Untouchables and they are in very darkest side of the society still this Issue is increasingly very high and nobody least bothered about this heinous system when these people (Dalits) get freedom...?
how the heck did you get like this?
@bornjust2003 its the caste system, if hinduism ignore that, and the whole widow thing, there would be no oppression, its not religion or God to blame but man
are you trying to falsify that there arent untouchables in India?
This is sad.
hhow can ppl treats ppl like that. thats wicketness and its a gud thing that gud deeds dnt cant take us ti heaven. everyone is equal no matter where or who they all.
@artsygreens
It is a racket not a religion.
Now a days it is not there. This video is misleading.
very good video. this show some of what actually happen in India. but there a lot more that are not seen here. i am american who's born & rise in thailand. I went to my high school in India. now i living and working in USA. i seen far more than a video camara can capture. this barely scratch the surface of the untouchable class. Life is tough where ever you go, but life in india is a lot harder than most people think. maybe in a 150-200 year time, this class will go away, not any time soon
were is the USA to save them from all of this? these ppl are alot worse treated than wat saddam did. may god help these ppl
In Kerala, a great sage,Sree Narayana Guru rose from lower caste into the mainstream society and he built himself temples for lower-caste Hindus. He made a social revolution in that state.
Church owns more land in india next only to government of india..it was given to missionaries by the britishers before leaving the occupied land.
All this stuff is way too sad. This is why when people say that we should respect all religions, I disagree. If a religion does not respect human rights, how can you possibly respect that religion? The caste system of India is part of Hinduism and it is a very sad thing that has been going on in India for too long. It needs to change. Because of all this, there is a Quit Hinduism movement in India for the Dalits. Many of the dalits have converted to Christianity or Buddhism as a result of this.
ik shehri babu mera dil le gaya chori chori.. 14:28 what a beautiful Punjabi song
Do you know the title of the song? I love it also
@coolpickings sorry i cant quite find it... could u describe what it looks like, or when in the vid to find it??
Shame on India's Cast system, how could they treat their own like slaves
I don't understand - this people not rights to grow vegetables?
Brahmin's are new age Dalits.
And if people belive that Brahmins did something wrong in earlier times why are they doing the same thing now? The way it was not in their ancestors hands to be borned as Dalit or not, it is not in hands of any Brahmin kid to be born to his/her parents.
Casteism and untouchability are outright diabolic...
If not for religion and politics, the poor would see clearly enough to rise up against this type of bullshit.
@Imrankniazi I will never complain again about my job. This is a eye opener. I have always loved indian culture, and these people live to learn to value life while people like me rarely work and complain about dumb things like a scratch on a car.
oh, I see. maybe, I'll take your word for it. you seem to be an expert on this sort of thing.
I'm Hindu and was taught to rescpect both Brahmins and dalits but...that young priest at the mandir is a JERK
I have job which also deals with people coming to Canada and believe me next time somebody comes with Indian passport .I 'll be treating you the way you guys treat those poor people. I promise you guys even I got fired.
and this is why i am not a Hindu!
Down with the caste system!
Christianity Sikhism and Islam are accepting religions and don't discriminate based on heredity!
i know my religion very well..god never said to people GO CLASSIFY AND CALL PEOPLE DALITS...the definition of dalit should be the ones who do sins...i think the people who are call dalits are brahmins and people who are called brahims are called dalits.....so please people dont blame hindusism....its the peoples fault that they dont use the brains that god gave them....and people who are dalits are indeed blessed as to their faith in god is indeed stronger than the higher cast.god bless them
Any nation that properly controlled the population of its people will do well.
how many gods do hindists worship? 3? 6? 10? 15?
i think they lost track of it,
Are there any Buddhists in Southern India or just North India?
That would suck, being the lowest among the lowest.
yeah or sikhism becuz both sikhism and buddhism beleaves universal truth peace and equality
@emfri it is @04:26 right underneath the swazsticker, thanks for your help
If it comes to going to a doctor, which politician will go to a doctor who has taken admission with 60%?
You are leaving poor people to mercy of such people - who do not have quality.
Thats why our bridges fall apart during construction.. thats why so many people suffer...
Long live our culture of behaving irrationally!
I really proud of u my dear brother...
Caste system is bad but Dalit is next level
I don't understand the caste system. People are ranked by their parent's name or is it their job. I don't feel like if India wants to move ahead and I mean in education that women are not objects to be kidnapped, raped and murdered. Jyoti Singh. died following the attack . The attacker said she should have let it happen. should have just let it happen the rapist say, then why if they got what they wanted did the use a metal pipe to puncture her internal organs leading to her death. The worth of men or their perceived worth is laughable, women do the work and often children, but when food is made the man gets to eat first. With men like that why do you need one. The people need to make girls more important than men. Too many men and not enough teaching the right way to treat women and girls should never be subject to that assault.
this is because the caste system is such that different castes do different types of jobs. the Brahmins (top) are the priestly caste, the Kshatriyas (second) are the warrior caste, the vaisyas (third) are the merchants and traders, and the shudras (fourth), at the bottom, do menial labor, or dirty filthy work. I know it sucks! I agree with your comments completely! However, I saw on you tube a dalit (or shudra) billionaire, so things are changing!
I am with you my brothers... i love all of you... look for Jehovah..
Hi Julan!
Thank you!
How long shall the strength be with the wicked that hate and victimize the meek? I know its hard to believe but the enevitable one is coming to teach us through wisdom and love. Eyes that are trained in the sight of selfish desire, destructive knowledge and hate will not recognize it's righteousness and make war against it. Only eyes trained in the sight of sympathy and empathy will see the enevitable as a chance at life the way the Creator of the atom meant for us.
the caste system is different from the law. By law, in India, it is illegal to discriminate based on caste. However, the caste system is ingrained into India society and has been for too many years.
I can say the same thing about America. They can fund a massive army but won't lower taxes so people can survive. I live in America and I know this. So why don't you try to fix your own problems before you butt into other's.
