    Veerasamy takes in washing for his living. He lives in a small village in southern India where all the inhabitants are Dalits - outcasts or 'Untouchables' as they're known in India. But even among the dalits, there are divisions, and Veerasamy belongs to the lowest scale of the hierarchy. The only payment he receives for back-breaking work, washing and steaming and drying the laundry of the village's 19 families, is the left-overs from their meals to feed his small family.

    All babies, Dalits or not, are born free and are sacred. The Dalits people are victims of a crazy, inhumane system.
    Nobody was or is born untouchable, absolutely nobody wherever. Whoever invented that stupid caste system was suffering from a form of seriously dangerous schizophrenia. All human beings have the same human rights. Veerasamy is a better human being than some so called educated ego tripper who calls him, or whoever else, an untouchable. I warmly greet and embrace all Dalits!

    And one last note, Hinduism doesn't support a caste system anymore. Just like most countries don't support slavery. It is the choice of the people living in the country to act that way not the religion itself. If somebody told you that you were now to become a slave you wouldn't do it. Well it's not like that in India. The poverty of the poor people restrict them from seeking opportunities. The religion of Hinduism gives people hope that maybe in their next life they will lead a better life.

    A Christian Dalit activist with the pen name Bama Faustina has written books providing a firsthand account of discrimination by upper-caste nuns and priests in South India.
    Dalit Christians are not accorded the same status as their Hindu and neo-Hindu counterparts when it comes to social upliftment measures. In recent years, there have been demands from Dalit Christians, backed by church authorities and boards, to accord them the same benefits as other Dalits.

    caste system is related to the Indian society, and not Hinduism (as is evident by presence of caste among Indian Christians and Muslims).Across India, many Christian communities still follow the caste system. Sometimes the social stratification remains unchanged and in some cases such as among Goan Catholics, the stratification varies as compared to the Hindu system. Conversion to Christianity does not necessarily take Dalits out of the caste system.

    All this stuff is way too sad. This is why when people say that we should respect all religions, I disagree. If a religion does not respect human rights, how can you possibly respect that religion? The caste system of India is part of Hinduism and it is a very sad thing that has been going on in India for too long. It needs to change. Because of all this, there is a Quit Hinduism movement in India for the Dalits. Many of the dalits have converted to Christianity or Buddhism as a result of this.

    I don't understand the caste system. People are ranked by their parent's name or is it their job. I don't feel like if India wants to move ahead and I mean in education that women are not objects to be kidnapped, raped and murdered. Jyoti Singh. died following the attack . The attacker said she should have let it happen. should have just let it happen the rapist say, then why if they got what they wanted did the use a metal pipe to puncture her internal organs leading to her death. The worth of men or their perceived worth is laughable, women do the work and often children, but when food is made the man gets to eat first. With men like that why do you need one. The people need to make girls more important than men. Too many men and not enough teaching the right way to treat women and girls should never be subject to that assault.

  • @ShawnGhala
    @ShawnGhala 12 років тому

    this is because the caste system is such that different castes do different types of jobs. the Brahmins (top) are the priestly caste, the Kshatriyas (second) are the warrior caste, the vaisyas (third) are the merchants and traders, and the shudras (fourth), at the bottom, do menial labor, or dirty filthy work. I know it sucks! I agree with your comments completely! However, I saw on you tube a dalit (or shudra) billionaire, so things are changing!

    How long shall the strength be with the wicked that hate and victimize the meek? I know its hard to believe but the enevitable one is coming to teach us through wisdom and love. Eyes that are trained in the sight of selfish desire, destructive knowledge and hate will not recognize it's righteousness and make war against it. Only eyes trained in the sight of sympathy and empathy will see the enevitable as a chance at life the way the Creator of the atom meant for us.
