If there is enough interest I will film a tear-down and follow up video. Sorry I didn't compare running speeds! (No idea why the bag said T-Series... please don't think I am secretly working for them) Sub 2 PDP..
What makes me happy is that they actually listened to the complaints people had about the first one and improved it. Gen 3 will probably be better :D. I pre-ordered mine. It's what the first one should have been.
Pretty pumped for this. I've been sticking pretty hard to true hardware and no emulation boxes, just flash carts. But this little guys is piquing my interest.
I know you made this comment a long time ago, but what website do you use for your roms? You don't have to link it but if you are able to just tell me where you get them from. I just want a safe and secure website for my PSP so I can possibly make a video on it too. (:
Ordered one. I'm pretty sure it's running linux so it'll be real interesting poking around the firmware and seeing if we could add some functionality/emulators/etc.
While the aspect ratio is close in the mode you show off at 11:55, it's still far from pixel perfect. Here's a tip on how you can easily notice if the scaling is not pixel perfect: Take a look at lines, like f.ex in text. If they have random double width/height lines (or they are blurry), it's usually a good indicator. The reason I keep complaining about this on your videos is because it's an important factor to many people, and you keep saying it's perfect while it's in fact not. This is kinda misleading!
Yeah, he's going on about how perfect the game boy games look. Hard disagree. The pixel stretching is extreme and horrifying. Really wish the thing had an option to go 1:1 with a black border at the top and bottom.
8bitbubsy I feel the same way. This dude’s “reviewing” the product? Where’s the criticism? SMB3 was so obviously running way too fast, and he didn’t even seem to notice. A commenter pointed out that that is probably due to the rom used. That’s good to know, as it eases my concerns that the thing can’t play games at 1:1 speed, but he didn’t even notice. Hey guy, your commenters are educating us better than you are! Are you really fit to review this game system when you can’t even TELL that a game is running at like 1.5x speed? Or when you notice that SMB is choppy but you do no further investigation as to why that may be happening? What I saw was one game running too fast, one game running too slow, and Pokémon Crystal showing signs of imperfect pixel scaling, contradicting the advertised claims. And all you’ve got to say is that you’re blown away and you’re giving it a great recommendation. Uh... what?
He didn't say it was pixel perfect or a integer multiple of it. He just said the AR was perfect. With such a low resolution display, scaling the GB resolution will always result in blurred lines since it's not an integer multiple. My guess is the resolution of the screen is 320:240 (12:9 = 1.3333). The way to get the GB resolution of 160:144 (10:9 = 1.1111) is to either cut off some pixels on the sides (267 : 240 ~ 1.1125) and then scale 144 to 240 and 160 to 267, both of which are not integer multiples, so you introduce the issues you discribe while still having nearly perfedct aspect ration (good enough for the human eye in any case). Or you just chop off the pixels on all sides reducing the 320:240 screen to 160:144 with large black borders everywhere and an effective picture size of 1.3" diagonal if my math isn't off. That's not a pretty sight. So while some of the criticism is valid, you yourself make a few errors and inaccuracies. And a bit of common sense would tell you what he meant.
@@woofenstein7900 now I just have to guestimate when it'll be here, they sent me the confirmation email and tracking number and the tracker hasn't updated since last week .-. still says it's prepped and it's being sent from Shenzhen
it really is, why the two turbo buttons? they could've easily made the turbo buttons act like l and r and added snes and gba functionality. for $40 which is the sale price it seems like a rip off. clockwork pi has a much better system that just went on sale (much more expensive but it can play ps1), and odroid go is cheaper and seems better
@@SENATORPAIN1 I guess it's the way he worded. I think for $40 its fine with what it could do. I see that if it's hackable then lack of L and R triggers is tragic.
The ._* files you're talking about on MacOS are used for Spotlight indexing, they contain information about each files and directory attributes in Finder such as Icon size and view options.
I wish they had kept the a and b buttons in the original placement and flipped the turbo buttons over. That and flipping the printed letters. Hopefuly the next one will be a little bigger too. Looks like an awesome upgrade! Surprised that a clone knockoff would actually improve a product.
I love how this device looks. I avoided the last bit boy because I don't like NES games, but I love gameboy games. I'm absolutly gonna pick this up. If it didnt have the black buttons, it'll look like a "Gameboy Classic" if Nintendo made one
13:16 It's not lag that you're noticing. What you're noticing is how the pixel scaling isn't correct from the Game Boy's resolution to whatever that screen's native resolution is. The issue is that you're finally noticing that there's a bit of an issue with the resolution it renders games on both the LCD and on the TV. The shingling effect you're seeing is making vertical collections of pixels go big and small when you scroll sideways, so it looks like there's lag. Really, though, it's that the emulation on this device isn't doing anything to help that effect by not offering any kind of visual filtering to alleviate that.
Actually, scrap that. Their website won't take an order and just keeps saying "High risk transaction" and when you try to complete again it just gives like an error saying "Do not duplicate payment" ... this is all after I had texts from my bank to verify this was me. Must be on some kind of dodgy list!
Just bought one, played it for a few hours, was great, but it stopped booting, anything i could do to fix. love the videos , been watching about a month, keep it up
Very interested in seeing the internals, I am wondering if they are not using a ESP32 as the main processer similar to the odroid go, the nes games sound about 1-3% too fast , but it's hard to tell as there isn't any direct capture from the device, would be nice to compare it , you can easily capture the unit using a Easycap USB composite capture device.
Here's a strange thing. On the box of the new one- the picture shows the black buttons on the right to be in the 'top' and 'left' positions of the four, whereas on the device itself the black ones are top and right... that, I'm sure you'll agree, is a fundamentally different grouping. 2:48 Vs 5:15 It's OK because they've settled on the correct configuration- but still...
I’m pleasantly surprised with this new bittboy!! But if it can’t play GBA games I might just opt for the Odroid. Sucks because I like having the 4 button layout but we can’t have it all lol
I think you really missed the mark here on how well this matches older hardware. As other have pointed out, the screen resolution does not actually go 1:1. There seems to be a large frame rate issue (that you eluded to, but went back and forth on). In addition to all of this, you pointed out that the colored buttons were in the wrong place, but said nothing of the A and B buttons actually being placed very differently from the original Gameboy/GBC/SNES.
There is a beta custom firmware release for the new bittboy v1 and v2. Google it. It's also supported by the makers of bittboy. The sound speed on Super Mario 3 was definitely faster/higher pitched than usual. I couldn't tell if it was the whole game or just the sound, but it is definitely worth mentioning. If it was perfect scaling (pixel doubling) that wouldn't be a big deal but stretching pixels to fit the resolution like that doesn't look good. Others have mentioned this in the comments and I definitely think it's important to point out as it's definitely noticeable (and perhaps a deal breaker for many) That being said, the IPS panel looks incredibly sharp and vivid, and for $40 I definitely think you can't really complain much. Quick question. Do you know if the battery used is the same as the gameboy advance batteries? My brother in laws battery lasted one charge and the company is not willing to repair or exchange for him which is really not cool. Thought maybe i could pickup a spare for him but wasnt sure what would fit.
It looks like the buttons are not placed correctly. The B button is supposed to be on the bottom while the A button is supposed to be on the left. If you can't play it like that, that would definitely be a deal breaker for me.
