I would love to see a video on how to know you have the right draw length. I’m like you - I need to know the ‘why’ behind the ‘what.’ I struggle to know if I’m trying too hard to pull and hold at 28”, or if I should chill and settle at 27 1/2” or so. What does my anatomy dictate draw length should be, and how do you know it or feel it? Also, as a trad archer myself, I’ve been eagerly awaiting this content!
What about elbow position for higher anchors? Folks shooting in traditional and longbow class often shoot with high anchors to get the arrow closer to their eye for aiming without string walking. The forearm line to the grip is still in line but they get critiqued for high elbow because the point of the elbow is higher than what you'd see an Olympic shooter have.
Awesome stuff, Jake! Been shooting for 45 years and never knew the optimal elbow, arm, and grip alignment. And thanks for shooting for our country back in the day. 99+% of the archers out there simply do not have that kind of dedication, perseverance, and ability to endure pain.😮💨
Oh my God, this is my problem! I realized lately that I just don't feel where the correct position is, I can't analyze it... thank you so much for the video! Even my coach didn't help much with that :/
I had just assumed elbow height, high or low, was simply variations in an Archer's physical dimensions. So thanks, I now know I need to work on this, to bring my elbow down. ♡
I was JUST having a problem figuring it out if i was doing it right or not for the last days and your video being released today is just a miracle! thank you for your work!!
I shoot two fingers, is that split fingers I'm new to archery and have a vintage York Archery Cadet 62". I'm ok I guess I've only been shooting a few months but I am wanting to get serious about it. I have only recently (last two weeks) started watching and trying to learn what I must know to become what I want to become in this sport. Thanks. Why is one of the best questions ever asked.
Hi Jake could you please do something on learning to shoot both eyes open when I try my arrows go far to left of target even thought I'm right eye dominant. Keep up the great work.
wow, i was searching for videos where you shoot with your wife so check your elbow height, because i notices mine was suspiciously high :) thanks a lot!
Thank you so much for this video Jake! I'm still a beginner and I've been observing other archers' elbow height during a competition and wondered why they all differ and no one seems to be able to explain why. I'm also a why and how type of learner so I can never fully grasp it when someone tells me to do this or that "just because" and I'm so happy to find someone who can explain the correlation of things, it makes so much more sense to me when I understand the why and how it actually works. Cheers! I appreciate all your work!
Great video as always, this helped me immensely! I just wanted to share something I experienced as a new Archer (Barebow). I was constantly struggling in a sort of weak position as (I realized, watching Jake's videos) was not fully using back tension, not matter how much i pushed or pulled, i felt "locked" and had my draw side upper trap engaged too much. Even if I had a decent alignment, my shots would be inconsistent from end to end, with a lot of high and low misses. Also, what caused me even more problems was the bow arm. No matter what, it felt weak and It was hard to keep it on target (felt like it was falling down) After using mirrors and a stretch band guess what: my draw elbow was too high 😅 Lowering it just an inch as I draw now completely engages the back muscles, and I can feel the bone on bone contact in my scapulae and my bow arm has now a more stable "base" in the shot process. Now I just wonder, seeing other barebow archers with different elbow heights, if maybe this is related to one's arm lenght or something. For me (a short guy with a short draw lenght) this did the trick.
Thanks Jake! I struggle for a month with my wife crushing me, Ouch! My claw was off, saw it when drawing and focusing on land 1 and 2. Then studied your claw. Need Vid on a constant draw hand position, Claw and wrist, kinda a issue for cyclist we tend to bend the wrist for impacts, and we develop a strong wrist that is flexed the wrong direction.
Primitive shooter here who didn't think much of technique issues until recently, just grip it and rip it style. I noticed that with a high elbow I can pull a heavier bow more easily, but it orients my wrist so that my index finger hangs over the arrow. The effect is more pronounced if I cant the bow, as I usually do. When I lower my elbow the wrist and fingers get into a much cleaner position. I can try to straighten my wrist in a high elbow position but it is very tense and uncomfortable. My arrows also used to have very deep self-nocks protruding behind the bowstring which probably made everything even worse. Just a few tiny fixes since then and my groups have improved dramatically.
So.... I'm started shooting recurve, compounds, and recurve hunting I a left hand compound bow but I feel more comfortable shooting left hand then right why. And I'm a right handed person
I have the issue of plucking the string and couldn't figure out why I had such a hard time to 'softly release' the string. Until a fellow took a picture of me with my elbow quite raised up and said I could release softly as die to my form I wouldn't be able to punch my shoulders together, hence me plucking the string. I'll be practising the coming weeks with an improved form😊

@Jake Kaminski I've just taken a good look at video footage. What happens is when I transfer to hold my wrist kinks causing my elbow to go high. I need to strengthen my wrists, forearms in order to maintain a high wrist position.
Thanks again Jake. I am really curious for your journey into traditional archery. I recenrly read about the visual aid of imaging yozr draw forearm as a chain and the fingers as a hook. What do you think about that? Greetings
So my elbow is too high. And now? No matter how hard I tried, I just can't get it any lower. Is this a physical limitation, or is there some kind of trick to it? Anyway, good to know how to judge elbow hight. 👍 Some people say "level with the arrow", but this is not the line of force.
Hey Jake I wanted to know where did you train when you started Archery...cause I might move in the future and want to know where I can go to keep practicing the sport.

It would be more repeteable to keep the T form consistent and not change the bow arm height in relation to draw arm. I tilt from my waist so the arms are always level. But this is just my opinion.
@@paulavirmasaloThat makes sense. I was taught that your torso should not bend left or right, which causes you to lean into or away from the bow, creating inconsistencies. But in simple geometry, the T has to lean (in your example) OR the vertical part of the T stays straight and the top (arms) pitches up. Maybe it's a bit of both?
You are rigth that the body should not lean basically anywhere. It should remain straight always in relation to the T form. Imagine you draw your bow on level ground and then - if needed - adjust the aiming from the waist only. It means you will remain in the correct T shape from waist up. I know there are archers with higher draw weights and recurve limbs that have less of an issue with the tilting. I really have to consider the details and form as I shoot a longbow with only #35 on my fingers.
My coach recently did some video analysis doing that line from the elbow to the hand to show it's too high, which is why I was struggling to get though the clicker. hey Jake! This was the advice that i was looking for yesterday for extra shot to shot consistency. I was too broke to afford a coach so i watched your form series and a bit of the tuning series thoroughly. I went to my first tournament yesterday and got gold on the qualifying rounds and silver on the olympic round. Thank you soo much for sharing your advice and experiences!! Ill look forward to more of your vids ^^
What is the why for the funky oversized fletchings? If the answer is I want more drag and weight in the back of the arrow to stabilize it, I will cringe.
Bill F I watch your site a lot. I was wondering if the tips you give apply to compound shooting? I'm always looking for tips from the best, but i only shoot a compound, and at 84 years old, i don't plan on changing. Appreciate you adn the channel
Yes, many of the things I cover directly apply to compound. Sometimes there are tweaks as mentioned in this video to use the D loop or connection point on the string as the reference. If you’re shooting fingers, this applies directly.
What a gorgeous bow

@jakekaminski_At_Nicegram if the real Jake Kaminksi would now, that you are spamming on his name...
he will be upset!
@jakekaminski_At_Nicegram Dont you have any better job, than spamming people on yt? I mean, you are sure from the phillipines or something... why cant you just grow avocados and sell them to someone...wouldnt be such a shamefull nonsense you are doing here, right?
Thanks!
Thank you!
@@JakeKaminskiArchery well, thank YOU Jake. I wish I could put 1000 bucks on this. I’m completely self taught and learned everything watching a videos. I consider myself a decent shooter now, all thank to you. Cheers.
Hi Jake - What are you using for your nocking points?
These are a bit of serving tied in knots around the string. ua-cam.com/video/dluQJyTGR2c/v-deo.html
@@JakeKaminskiArchery Wow, on your Trad bow it looks like two different colored little balls.
They are just two different colored threads.
Valeu!
Thanks for the super thanks!!
Hey Jake, long bow and shooting gloves? What’s next a back quiver?
What is the why for the funky oversized fletchings? If the answer is I want more drag and weight in the back of the arrow to stabilize it, I will cringe.
Cause I burned them myself custom out of huge feathers and felt like going with something different for no real reason.
@@JakeKaminskiArchery Thanks, i really appreciate your response and will keep watching
Great video on elbow height. It's been a weekly conversation at our archery club.
