I know i'm 2 years late, but awesome choice! If my latest purchase, (funnily enough it's a 7x3x2 as well) didn't have the good old steel stand, that does need a fair amount of tlc, that was my next option! Good to know there are firms here in Oz that will help out!
Great stand, quality costs but worth it in the long run. Lots of stands over here have acrylic or coated coloured panels like the modern kitchen ones. The normally have a bracket that locates into the bottom support beam and then just held on with magnets, simple to remove and can be easily swapped out if you want to change colour scheme.
Great video and well explained. I had to go the poor man route and built mine out of wood with some hue led lights. Kept the filtration/plumbed everything into my closet giving the tank/stand empty and glowing underneathe
NIce! I am currently working with AluFab the same company that produced Tidal Gardens stands right now and in the work of building my dream stand for my 220 gallon tank and I am really excited. ATM my build cost is roughly the same as yours but subject to change as I am working on including vertical bars to be able to hang lights off of it as well as magnetic doors and panels. Good work is not cheap I agree whole heartedly. Their team also runs the data to make sure my tank will be a bespoke work of art that last a lifetime or as long as I don't go even bigger(cough..400gal) 😉.I have had my share of DYI projects cost just as much or lil more than a professional work in the past that could a have been done right the first time around. The back and forth buying the wrong item and returning items wasting or short of product costing money and time just winging it lol. Also the not warping overtime and non rust issue is a must in my book. I also have had a wood stand on my 220 for the last 9 years now and i see the wood deforming here and there as well. Seeing your project give me confidence for my project !! Kudos Sam
Hot damn, no wonder she got the new floor! One thing I noticed, in the States they seem to be using the rectangular 80/20 so that the two end noggins are sitting over the vertical posts and bearing all the weight.
Sam, a great choice IMO. 80/20 looks so Aesthetic, sleek and yet strong at the same time. My light rack is 80/20 and holds six 4ft T5’s 👍 I’m glad I made the choice to go this route. You’re stand looks great. Congrats and looking forward to seeing your new build come together.
That stand looks great but everything will be exposed. No doors or sides? I'm looking for a new strong stand for my 72" long, saltwater aquarium. Ideas please.

Congrats for taking the plunge with the extruded aluminium stand. I remember you asking opinions about the material on Facebook a while ago. I very nearly went this way for my 6 foot tank but after building a new house it just wasn't to be this time around. Really interested in seeing how you end up tackling the cladding though. It was something I didn't quite get around to figuring out either.

My wife works for a company that uses extruded aluminium and although my desk and a few other things are -bodged- made using it, I'd never considered it for using as an aquarium stand. I've been considering a marine tank at some point so at least I'll have access to those materials. That's a turn up for the books! lol

I was wondering if getting a tap and die set would make it any cheaper, with the premise that you might later down the line use it to build more stands?
going to build my stand this coming month any thing you'd like to share after 3 years ? stainless steel nut bolts working fine ? and should I paint the aluminum for extra protection from oxidation or not to worry about that ??
The process you described is exactly the same with framingtech.com where I got my stand. They drew it up, did weight analysis, then changed members then I changed leg placement and height, they re analised the whole thing and once the number met the safety factor they quoted me for it and 2 weeks later from my approval it was in my driveway. I built it 84" 212 cm long, 32" 81cm wide and 46"116cm tall for extra sump clearance. The whole thing is built from 45x45 and 45x90 profiles. I understand shipping from US would have cost some penny but my stand was fraction of what you paid. I urge those in the US to get a quote from FramingTech and not get scared by the numbers here.
100% agree! FramingTech look amazing and if I was anywhere remotely near America, it is where I would have gone. They use high quality profiles and fittings and have excellent customer service. Just doesn't make sense to ship it from the other side of the globe to Australia (especially with freight charges at the moment!)

Yeah that is an excellent point. To be honest, I didn't really even consider it and that isn't a good reason not to! I had my heart set on extruded ally and really just had to get over the bill. I know that plans often change or "re-align" with reef tanks as new equipment comes in and out and having the ability to modify things to accomodate that is a godsend. Plus, the fact that I can assemble and disassemble this to move between my place and the local fish store where we will be doing a fair bit of work on it is very handy!
Any updates? I’m working with Framing Tech on a stand now. I will be trying to do a more traditional look for when I deck it out (to match my old house and antique furniture in the room). I’d love to see what you have done or will be doing on the outside.
Can the bottow row hold the weight of a large sump? Or would it be best to be flat on the floor for that to be supported? If you put a tank on the bottom it would be held up by the hardware only, and not the strength of any structure below it?

Aluminum stands new to me - trying to learn it all for a future build :) So all the weight of the sump is dependent on the screw/bolt from the cross beams on the bottom? wow. @@atravels1055 you'd be best off asking your local aluminium extrusion facility for them to design something for you (like I did in this video). The weight of the sump is actually supported by bolts through the extrusion, not all of the fasteners are the cheap bolt on ones, the type I used you actually cut a thread into the end of the extrusion and drill through the connecting piece
I love extruded aluminum, but i hate this idea. The reason being the mode of failure for these members and fasteners. So, the metals can still corrode, specially in a marine environment. Major members are not redundant, and when it fails, it's going to be a total loss. Pressure Treated lumber would have been 10% of the price, and far more reliable.
Having had treated lumber stands in the past, I can say for sure they are not more reliable. A fraction of the price yes, not sure about 10% though…. It’s also important to design the stand so that the weight is not supported by the fasteners, but by the upright beams - like this is. But hey, is all good, we’re all different! Got any info on your reef tank?
@@ParkersReef All other things being equal, if you have a leak that is going to call into question of failure for BOTH 80/20, and PT Lumber you have to look at the mode of failure. If PT Fails, What's it look like? Well, lumber gets soft and compresses and slowly things end up sagging... It's isn't an sudden failure. With the 80/20 and a key member's fixtures are corroding and it fails, you end up with a catastrophic failure and a total loss your frags are rolling around on your floor. That's not going to happen with PT. SURE, the 80/20 looks cool, and you can claim your cooler then the other guys, but seems like a foolish risk to me. That's without even getting into the electrolysis risks. Seems stupid... "Look I made a flag pole of Solid Gold!!!" I love 80/20 for projects, but there's like 2 things I wouldn't use it for, one of them being an Aquarium.

Just the moisture alone causes it to fail after a few years. That is the reason I shut down my last tank, the stand was not looking too safe. But as said above, respectively just one opinion (Y)
have you thought about levelling caster wheenls? like tidal gardens? ive been looking into a designing something similar and im trying to find the right door fittings that is neat and tidy to cover up the extruded alumunium.
I did look into it, but realistically I’m not going to be moving the tank. I have adjustable feet which do lift the tank off the floor which would make it possible to get a jack under if absolutely needed
Hi Sam, did you ever consider a steel stand so you could eliminate or minimize the center support? I am designing my stand for a 60x36x28 tank and really think I want no center support.
Nice stand Sam, you've inspired my new build! It looks like you didn't use any threat locking agent (eg. mild loctite purple or blue) with the standard fasteners. Is this something you considered? Or did you think the fasteners would be fine on their own over time?
Love the new stand, as strong as my boxed steel and 1/20th the weight. Looks awesome Sam. What material will.you have on top to support the tank and below to support the sump?
Still working through the details. Likely be a a pro lite panel interior and a marine ply exterior, although could be acrylic yet... Thank you very much for becoming a member too - means a lot 🙌🏻
Membership has its benefits! I used 25mm marine ply under tank and sump and protected it with 5 coats of marine enamel lacqure. We are 3years 8 months in and it still looks brand new. An occasional wipe with a wet towel gets the salt off and keeps it shining. I also went with Tasmanian oak vaneered doors and gave them 5 coats as well and they look just as good. But I'm a bit of a wood nut, it wont fit everyones taste. Ps I also used the same adjustable feet, you wont be disappointed in them.
Really nice stand Sam! Which connectors did you end up using? Also, consider thick, coloured acrylic to wrap the stand (easily machined, mounted and waterproof!) that's what I plan on going with for a modern look.
@@ParkersReef As far as my thinking on the acrylic panels goes. I plan to drill holes in the back of the panels without drilling right through and use those holes to mount brackets to hold a dowel rod or pvc pipe which can be guided into slanted hooks mounted on the stand frame, so the panels can lift on and off.
Hello there. I really want a hobby aquarium. My aquarium will consist of two tanks. I am thinking of putting a 55 ”x 20” x20 ”aquarium on the first and second floors. I will put a resting tank at the top. I was thinking of wood and iron profiles as a coffee table. But while I was doing research on the internet, I saw the post. And why I wanted it with t slot (sigma profile). But I have no idea about that. Dad, help me with a design, please. What kind of a coffee table should I design?
I think your best option would be to reach out to a local engineering place that works with extrusions. They’ll be able to design something to your specs that can support the weight of the tank 👍🏻

when watching this video and seeing you will spend well over $4000 on just a stand i thought well parkers lost the plot,,,, but then i glanced over at one of my 30L nanos and see $3000 worth of stock and realise I am the one who has lost the plot.
Nice but totally overbuilt. A single 90x90mm extrusion can span 8ft without needing any support. I know because i built two 16ft systems using this stuff.
@@ParkersReef Depends on how you look at it. Those supports limit access under the stand and you could have used the money you saved on something else.
The money you will forget in time but if you, in years have problems with a cheaper option, you will slap you in the face "why choosing the cheap one?".

The material has a clear anodise on it if that was what you mean? Or do you mean the cabinetry?
I'd recomend acrylic panelling, its waterproof. Clean and looks modern.

Working a treat! Use quality stainless fittings and cost them in a material that sailing yachts use to stop oxidation and you’ll be sweet

I did look into it, but realistically I’m not going to be moving the tank. I have adjustable feet which do lift the tank off the floor which would make it possible to get a jack under if absolutely needed
Hi Sam, did you ever consider a steel stand so you could eliminate or minimize the center support? I am designing my stand for a 60x36x28 tank and really think I want no center support.
Considered it yes, but ultimately decided against it. The centre upright is no big deal, plus is removable if i ever need to temporarily

It looks like you didn't use any threat locking agent (eg. mild loctite purple or blue) with the standard fasteners. Is this something you considered? Or did you think the fasteners would be fine on their own over time?
apparently not necessary with these fasteners, but of course you could use some if you wished

Wood is better than iron, but aluminium is better than both in my opinion

Still working through the details. Likely be a a pro lite panel interior and a marine ply exterior, although could be acrylic yet...

I used 25mm marine ply under tank and sump and protected it with 5 coats of marine enamel lacqure. We are 3years 8 months in and it still looks brand new. An occasional wipe with a wet towel gets the salt off and keeps it shining. I also went with Tasmanian oak vaneered doors and gave them 5 coats as well and they look just as good. But I'm a bit of a wood nut, it wont fit everyones taste.
Ps I also used the same adjustable feet, you wont be disappointed in them.
Really nice stand Sam! Which connectors did you end up using? Also, consider thick, coloured acrylic to wrap the stand (easily machined, mounted and waterproof!) that's what I plan on going with for a modern look.

I used a combo of stainless standard connectors and universal connectors.
@@ParkersReef As far as my thinking on the acrylic panels goes. I plan to drill holes in the back of the panels without drilling right through and use those holes to mount brackets to hold a dowel rod or pvc pipe which can be guided into slanted hooks mounted on the stand frame, so the panels can lift on and off.

Real ITEM profiles are expensive but top of the line. You could put a TANK/Panzer on top and it would hold ;P

Hello there. I really want a hobby aquarium. My aquarium will consist of two tanks. I am thinking of putting a 55 ”x 20” x20 ”aquarium on the first and second floors. I will put a resting tank at the top. I was thinking of wood and iron profiles as a coffee table. But while I was doing research on the internet, I saw the post. And why I wanted it with t slot (sigma profile). But I have no idea about that. Dad, help me with a design, please. What kind of a coffee table should I design?
I think your best option would be to reach out to a local engineering place that works with extrusions. They’ll be able to design something to your specs that can support the weight of the tank 👍🏻

I went for 6mm cast acrylic sheet and 19mm H grade polystyrene

Nice but totally overbuilt. A single 90x90mm extrusion can span 8ft without needing any support. I know because i built two 16ft systems using this stuff.

@@ParkersReef Depends on how you look at it. Those supports limit access under the stand and you could have used the money you saved on something else.
The money you will forget in time but if you, in years have problems with a cheaper option, you will slap you in the face "why choosing the cheap one?".
