    great video.
    I cam across an article that stated that what we think and what most people teach of what attack and release times do was infact not quite correct though is close.
    from what i remember the article stated that the attack time is how long it takes the compressor to apply 2/3rds of the compression ratio set, with the release its the opposite of the attack.
    When a compressor is over the threshold its always attacking and releasing.

    Very useful. Thanx for sharing.....But, I have one question.
    In which order do you chain these effect/tools? Would it be 1, de-esser 2. compressor 3. EQ and 4. reverb?

    • @logician9116
      @logician9116 10 років тому +3

      3, 2, 1, 4

      Thanx

    • @logician9116
      @logician9116 10 років тому +1

      No problem. Another chain people often do is 3 (reductive - i.e. taking out unpleasant tones), 2, 1, 3 (additive - typically adding some high end or warmth), 4. I've also seen 3-, 2, 3+, 1, 4; and, 2,3,1,4. Reverb will almost always be last. A popular technique I've observed for reverb and delay is to create a seperate send track so it's not interfering with the original chain. There's much more control over the mix and stereo imaging that way.

    • @logician9116
      @logician9116 10 років тому +2

      Whatever the case, I think the best method is to definitely clean up the signal with EQ *before* compressing it. If you compressed first, you would be boosting all of the frequencies, and it would be harder to remove the unpleasant ones after the fact; you would need more extreme EQ to do so and run the risk of making it sound unnatural.
      My rule of thumb is to create a pleasant signal I like without compression, then use compression merely to create some volume consistency.

    Thanks, appreciated. Would you generally use those effects in the order in which they appear in the video ?

    • @fullsailuniversity
      @fullsailuniversity  8 років тому +3

      There is no definitive answer to that question. There is no right or wrong in the order. For example, do you want the delay signal to have reverb or do you want the reverb signal to be delayed. With Time Based Effects you need to experiment. Dynamic processing depends on if you are trying to fix something of create a sound.
      Hope this helps!

    What VU level do you keep for presentation recording?
    I mean it looks very easy to create this sound, but in reality it is a bit harder to do. Mostly people get a poor signal from the microphone and start to amplify it with a high noise ratio as result. What i seen is that this is the biggest frustration from many starting audio and/or video recorders. I think that it is elementary to make the basic of the recording right, the other effects are more easely to understand in the post production. Without a good basic recording you have simply 10 steps back or even have a screwd up recording.

    • @SniperBen17
      @SniperBen17 11 років тому

      VU Meters can be calibrated to whatever you want them to be at. If you are using a DAW to record however, you should make sure that you are in pre fader metering first of all and then once you are getting signal you want to peak somewhere between -10 and -6. Getting a good clean signal is the key to making sure that your vocal is easy to work with. Hope this helps!! :-)

      Benjamin Porter Yes, that helps people indeed. Thank you for this explenation. It is indeed a art to get a good clean signal, but in many educational video's that is not completly explained.

    Is there a way to figure out the predelay and reverb time so you can sync with bpm?

    • @fullsailuniversity
      @fullsailuniversity  8 років тому

      We will reach out to Recording Course Director Darren Schneider to find out.

    • @fullsailuniversity
      @fullsailuniversity  8 років тому +6

      Yes, you can figure out the 1/4 note delay time of the song that you are working on and start to 1/2 that a few times to get it into a reasonable pre delay time for pre delay.
      This is subjective and song dependent on how long you should go.
      For example if the song was 120BPM
      60,000/120BPM= 500ms that is the 1/4 not delay time for a song done at 120 beats per minute.
      500/2=250
      250/2=125 Third option
      125/2=62.5 Second option
      63.5/2=31.25 This would be the start for pre delay

    4:45 "It's important that the pre-delay and reverb times are synced with the tempo of your song"
    Can someone explain this?

    • @SeanofAllTrades
      @SeanofAllTrades 10 років тому

      It's a concept that you set your reverb decay time to be an interval of your tempo. This should make the reverb less noticeable and blend easily into your track. It gives the impression of there being space without an obvious reverb sound. www.thewhippinpost.co.uk/tools/delay-time-calculator.htm check the link for a calculator you can use.

    I've found one more point … when you record at home.. maybe it is only my mic's problem:
    Find the appropriate distance bettween your lips and you mic. You get closer: more deeps in you recording. You get somewhat far: more boxy sound. I use my fingers to measure the distance, and make some tries.
