- Butterfly: The Liberation of Mariah Carey - In 1997, Mariah Carey released her sixth studio album Butterfly. It is largely remembered today for its very tangible implications in her personal life and musical legacy. It was her first album following her divorce from her then-husband and manager, Tommy Mottola, which gave her the artistic and personal freedom to create music on her own terms. The album also sparked the pop music trend of partnering with hip-hop artists and demonstrated not just her recognized vocal prowess but also her ability as a songwriter in contemporary pop. So why was the Butterfly era a transformative period in Mariah Carey’s life and professional career, and why is this record considered a remarkable album in the history of pop and R&B?
Realizing that her song “Outside” talked about her experience being biracial living in this world is now one of my favorites off the album.
She did rap on her debut album tho song called "Prisoner"
Thoughts:
1. It’s worth mentioning that two songs in the album were inspired by her real-life romantic escapades with Derek Jeter, which she describes extensively in her recently published memoir.
2. She also explains in her memoir how she used whisper singing since childhood as solace from the bleakness of her family and personal life.
3. The way I interpret it, Butterfly is a sort-of concept album centered on freedom. She expresses happiness in her newfound liberties (Honey, Fourth of July, and Whenever You Call). However, she still longed to be free in other aspects of her life, such as an oppressive relationship (Butterfly), unrealized romances (My All and The Roof), past and present traumas (Close My Eyes), and personal insecurities (Outside).
She is metamorphosing. But Butterfly serves as a genesis, rather than the completion, of the process, which continues arguably to this day.
4. Butterfly showcases Mariah’s pen game at its best, and speaking of songwriting, I think that would make an interesting topic for one of your following videos. Why is it harder for women to be recognized as songwriters than their male counterparts? Taylor Swift would make a perfect subject for this!
Definetly a topic to be discussed!
I sometimes find that female artists has a hard time to be recognised as a songwriter. Mariah Carey, Taylor Swift would be a good subject for the topic. 🔥
Britney Spears could also be a subject for this topic as not many people knew she wrote a lot of her materials.
I guess it depends on the type of genre too. For rock female artists such as Kate Bush and Fiona Apple and rock groups with female songwriter, the public identified them as songwriters. But for other genre like pop or R&B, the public seem to recognised the female artists as just a singer/entertainer.
@@kirstytan7855 Not the majority of her catalog tho, especially her earlier work like BOMT and everything that came out from 2007 to the conservatorship (2008-2016) with albums like Circus, Femme Fatale, Britney Jean in particular and Glory
Could you do a video about the impact Fantasy Remix ft ODB had on music history

Please do 2pac’s 1995 classic album me against the world because it’s own, removed from the hype, me against the world is just a very quality record that finds an artist coming into his own through the influence of his peers, both local and musical.
Very artistic ❤️
