The Velvet Rope walked so Renaissance could run. No one can tell me that every artist that came out after this album weren’t inspired by it. To me Pop artists (regardless of race/ethnicity) started to be more edgy and bold in their lyrics because of Ms. Jackson’s courage and bravery. Pop artists weren’t being this in depth and real on their songs. It’s scary to listen to the song “Empty.” The words are more relevant now since we communicate primarily with one another via texts, social media DMs etc. and how we feel empty when we don’t get replies/responses when we really want them. This album to this day astounds me with its brilliance.
@@tariqthomas9090 thank you for your response. I most definitely agree with the Legend Prince. They both made game changing works of musical art. Black women artists rarely get the real credit they deserve so I always make it a point to do so.
The song “Empty” explored the momentary optimism followed by intense emptiness one feels from online dating…in 1997! The internet was still in its infancy but Janet was still decades ahead of her time and pushing boundaries at the height of her career
The vids for the album fits the songs, and yes even you. Because the tour vid makes it seem like the parts where we see her face close to the screen, while the actual tour footage is just like Janet listening to her other side.
Idk why, but I am so happy that you’re covering both Mariah and Janet by celebrating their albums that has been adorned by many including myself. The Velvet Rope has always felt like journal tucked away for so long and now being opened to the masses. It was like Janet was healing the wounds that wasn’t physically on her.
This album is so ahead of it’s Time that’s it’s scary. Song empty is literally the year 2023 and she sang about it in 1997 , the production , the music , the lyrics , the depth , the meaning , the metaphors , Janet Jackson at her best !!
The Velvet Rope is probably the most personally important record in my life. The song You, served a mirror which forced to look myself in the eye, and compelled me to live my truth. I am grateful to Janet for helping me find my strength at that time. I was sad the record did not perform better commercially. Thanks for this in depth look into its making.
another one! "the velvet rope" is my favorite Janet album & her best of work of art! 🔴 1997 was an amazing year in music, along with Butterfly 🦋 by Mariah Carey. 25 years later & they're both timeless albums 💿
I was totally unaware of the nuance in “Got till it’s gone” and I’m South African and missed the themes🤦🏿♂️! What an epic unpacking and dissecting of a musical icon. I THOROUGHLY enjoyed this❤ • 🇿🇦
....she was so powerful with this album and tour...unstoppable...the cutting edge of pop music and video....also she was at her most approachable....loved the album....
I actually bought this album the day it came out, and have with every album of hers since. I was 17, and this album caught me having my own Velvet Rope moment in my personal life. I had to love the me behind The Velvet Rope, which I now do. I just haven't learned to let others love it. But first things first. As Janet says "Spent most your life pretending not to be, the one you are but who you choose to see, You cant blame nobody but YOU..." Her HBO concert was magical.
This album is my 2nd favorite CD from her behind Rhythm Nation 1814(which have my number 1 favorite song of her whole career), this album really helped heal her and her fans. My top 5: 1.Together Again 2.Title Track 3.I Get Lonely 4.My Need 5. What About
Thank you for this!! Velvet Rope has been my favorite album of hers since a child and even more-so as an adult! I appreciate Janet for her vulnerabilities, authenticity, creativity and always pushing bar 🫶🏽
I’m sorry this is so off topic but at 1:15 she is showing the adinkra symbol “Sankofa” (which is also my middle name) which means “knowing your past will help your future” also I really appreciate this video I was really informed of a lot I didn’t know that Janet went through so much it’s very saddening
Her album sales i will never understand...rhythm nation had 7 top 5 hits and only sold 12-15 million WW???!! Where albums with similar amount of hit singles sold 20-30+ million. She’s badly under certified
I appreciate the effort and work, in every area, that you put into your videos. As a young man when this album came out, Velvet Rope was a defining moment for me, and your video perfectly stated almost everything I believe about the album! Much success to you!
Your videos are great! At some point can we have ANOTHER video about you, and in it can you talk about your Caribbean heritage + how your heritage has inspired you+ your perspective of being a black Caribbean man in France? Also, one day can we get a video analysis of MJ Video - 'they don't care about us' . Thank you for the great content.
I’m so mad that I can’t download the whole album on Apple Music. I bet tidal has it Oops, take that back! I found it… almost paid for tidal too. I need my vinyls back
Free xone my all time favorite just takes "control" to another level Comparing that of 1986 and 1997 while it express about you live your life and just be yourself gay , straight, bi lesbian and homo Tonight's the night omg her cover takes you into paradise when shes singing about another girl then boy I was always so quiet about my sexuality until Janet's album just pulls me through.

Agreed. I would definitely credit both Janet and Prince for being edgier pop stars. Janet was especially influential for women in terms of sexuality.

Why do we always bring up other artist, especially Beyoncé
This album can be played with NO SKIPS and is still current as hell

Crazy how ahead of its time it was! You see this play out to this day.

I agree! It’s often overshadowed by Madonna. But Janet can hold her own. The Velvet Rope is just as good as Ray Of Light imho.
1997, what a year.
TBFH!!!
One of the most important albums in history.

Janet Jackson's the GOAT
Together Again and Empty are two of the greatest songs of all time
The Velvet Rope was my coming of age album & Im 41 y/o now STILL PLAYING IT LIKE YESTERDAY 💋 Best album of ALLLLL TIME!!

I get lonely is one of the best vocal performances I've ever heard ...it's like she was one with the beat ...that shii just hit your soul different
Revisit Brandy's Full Moon & Afrodisiac next.
Rihanna was so inspired by the velvet rope during her loud era
And definitely Anti era. Anti and loud scream Janet jackson " velvet rope " vibes
Loud was more into All for you than TVR

The only Janet Jackson album I ever purchased. Best investment ever. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis killed the production. Her best album in my opinion.
My favourite Janet album
This was her best work ever. I never understood why it was not as critically acclaimed or a best seller for her. She was ahead of her time.
Very well written and well researched video. Kudos to the creator!
Her best album after the first two. Hands down
no
The Velvet rope is one of THE best albums released and it’s my favorite Janet album long live the queen of pop 👑❤️
Renaissance ≠ The Velvet Rope. They don’t compare. All For You = Renaissance.
Leave Queen B alone, you guys keep mentioning mostly her but not the artist that is talked about in the video.
