ABOUT THE OXFORD UNION SOCIETY: The Oxford Union is the world's most prestigious debating society, with an unparalleled reputation for bringing international guests and speakers to Oxford. Since 1823, the Union has been promoting debate and discussion not just in Oxford University, but across the globe.
The Oxford Union is deeply grateful and encouraged by the messages of support in response to our determination to uphold free speech. During our 200 year history, many have tried to shut us down. As the effects of self-imposed censorship on university campuses, social media and the arts show no signs of dissipating, the importance of upholding free speech remains as critical today as it did when we were founded in 1823. Your support is critical in enabling The Oxford Union to continue its mission without interruption and without interference. You can support the Oxford Union here: oxford-union.org/supportus

She could just ask him to describe and describe his body of work . His knowledge and experience is what’s important not hers? An interviewer needs to ask open ended questions not leading ones. Than he can inform, explain and describe his experience. He can be the story teller and we all listen to him! Not her!

Thanks Tom Hanks for all the laughs, tears and all the range of emotions you have made us feel! You sir are a national treasure! I want to thanks him from the bottom of my heart! I don’t have any social media so I can’t post it straight to his account so if someone can copy and paste to his Facebook or whatever other social media he uses I would be very grateful! Thanks again!

It's also the quality has dropped. Go back 30 years and Shawshank Redemption is #95 at the box office. It got overlooked Because there was 50 other good movies released that year (including Forrest Gump and Philadelphia). Nowadays months will go by without one decent movie being released.

My interpretation of refusing to say a line even when you knew it was in the script is people can sometimes change their definition of a character as they progress through the piece, but if you know the line was in the script and you can hold space for both your developing interpretation and the interpretations that caused the lines to be written you not only have a broader interpretation of the character but a broader ability to merge interpretations with understanding, communication and expression. Even if someone was right when they thought they really knew better than the director or the writer due to how their interpretation of the piece is developing if they wanted people to agree they would have to communicate the reasoning which would be best done well before it gets in the way, not in the exact moment it would cause a problem

I disagree with Hanks completely when he mentions the guy who says "They don't make great movies anymore. There are no Godfathers etc." and Hanks disagrees and says that there are. No, there aren't. To me, the greatest decades for film in my life have been the 70's and the 90's. The Oscar winner for best picture during the first four years of the 70's were 'Patton', 'The French Connection', 'The Godfather' and 'The Sting'. The first four years of the 90s gave us best picture Oscar winners 'Dances with Wolves', 'The Silence of the Lambs', 'Unforgiven' and 'Schindler's List'. Do you know what the last four years of the 2020's have given us for best picture? 'Nomadland', 'Coda' (GAG...an updated version of the ABC Afterschool Special series from the 70's), 'Everything Everywhere All at Once' and 'Oppenheimer'. Only 'Oppenheimer' can rival the 70's and 90's best picture Oscar winners. So, the motion picture Academy bestows its praises on films every year peer to peer. It's a credible process because people like Hanks and thousands of others in the industry are Academy voting members. If anyone thinks the films so far in the 2020's that have won best picture are as good as the ones from the 70's and 90's, historians would like to tell you that what is being made today is more CONTENT than it is CINEMATIC BRILLAINCE.

I think Mr Hanks was mistaken. There are very few really good original films made, in modern times, not as many as in the past.
The economics used to be that films were a cheap source of entertainment, in terms of public access to them.
With a theater seat costing upwards of $20, the majority of the population, who used to be middle class, who are now working poor, no longer can afford a night out like that, a few times a month. Plain old TV, be it broadcast, cable, or satellite and possibly streaming services are what most can afford.
This means that spending the cost of a meal on a single motion picture experience means it it had better be worth it, to generate enthusiasm to continue repeating that expense.
This puts pressure on industry investors to churn out remakes of earlier successful films, instead of chancing innovation of new stories, because of the risk of a loss.
AI has the potential of destroying the film industry, as we have known it. People can soon be able to create their own films at home, or even have AI do it for them. So a motion picture experience is under even more pressure to deliver.
No, the industry is going to have to find ways of becoming a more personal experience across the board. To me, this might mean opening up the guilds for regular personal interaction with the public at dinners, and auditoriums.
Aside from rubbing elbows with the famous, hearing old stories, learning techniques we might apply to our own amateur efforts as hobbies, this is a possible future area of new growth for the industry at large, including actors, set design, lighting design, cinematography, sound, carpentry, costumers, literally every single group that contributed to the process can develop this engagement with fans and enthusiasts.
We, as a civilization must learn to become community, again, in new ways. This will keep the industry alive, if it goes into the business of organizing these events.

I didn’t enjoy any of those movies you listed as those didn’t relate to me. I like profound thinking movies and ones that take me on an emotional journey. I’ve found later on in increased years of age, the movies I thought nothing of Ive related to or enjoyed. Depends of what you’re going through, what you’ve experienced and where you are or what your searching for in your time of life depends on if you like the movie or not. Game of thrones I could not see the appeal to it at that time of my life but finally watched it last year and could immerse myself in it. Probably because life was less stressful.
