In the past four years we’ve purchased anchor chain for our sailboat twice (and changed it 3 times). Not something any boat owner wants to say.
We only have a few more important boat projects to tackle before we can splash, sail, and live on the hook once again. And when I say important, I mean it. Because aside from making sure we stay afloat, chain and ground tackle is the most important part of living on a boat.
So, today we’re swapping out our crappy, rusty, unreliable chain for hopefully the last time. We’re also sharing the cautionary tale of how we got scammed and what we’ve learned along the way.
    WHO ARE WE?
We’re Jason and Nikki Wynn. We been living #OffTheGrid and exploring the world for 10 years.
Our first six years of #travel were an epic road trip around North America.
Now we’re on a #sailing voyage about the world. Did we have any previous sailing experience, of course not!
Neither of us is overly talented, smart, rich, lucky, or retired. But that doesn’t stop us from reaching far-flung destinations, having wild #adventures and managing everything that makes living aboard a moving vessel possible.
We’re two ordinary people that just so happen to live an extraordinary life.
And this is why we publish our lives on the world wide web. We share in hopes of inspiring you to find your adventure.

Hey Everyone! After researching chain more and more we found a certification for anchor chain. Could be worth looking into if you aren’t buying the ACCO brand. There’s more details in our blog post: www.gonewiththewynns.com/scammed-anchor-chain
Also, in the video I forgot to mention that all the drone shots are from the Mini 2. I do think it’s a great little drone and perfect for travelers and beginners. Here’s the link if you want to check it out: bit.ly/WYNNmini2
Thanks for watching…and if you’re in the process of buying chain I hope this saved you a couple thousand bucks and a huge headache 😱🙏🏻

I wonder if there is some kind of water proofing spray you could also put on the next chain. Lik have you ever seen the video of the guy spraying his brand new expensive shoes with water phobic spray? Then he splats mustard on them and it literally rolls off and nothing happens to the shoes?

Joshua Wisseman Is a UA-cam channel chef. He gets big time ads like nobody else I see. He gets the US Navy for goodness. People with 15 million subscribers don’t get the UA-cam adage this guy gets. He gets it for two simple reasons. One he does tremendous marketing like you just did. Two you never hear him whine about “well we’re not being sponsored by this person”. “They didn’t give us this product”. “These people don’t even know who we are”. So stop saying those things!

Hi!! I've been watching your videos and i love them! I saw that you had some issues with your anchor chain. I finally spoke to my dad who is a boat builder about your chain and he told me something really interesting. The main problem might be with your windlass . If you have current loss from your windlass it may transfer to your chain and make it corrode way faster that it should be. My dad's friend had a chain from a brand named Acco and he had windlass issues and his high quality chain was useless in no time. The current loss might occure if you used grease that contains lithium or other metalic component. These products can create a bridge between the positive or the negative and the windlass housing and because of that, you loose current into the chain. If so, you can use bee wax instead, you melt it and use a brush to apply it and it works just fine to prevent the electrical coponents of your windlass to rust (that is the main reason why people put a lot of grease in their windlass). Otherwise, look for salt or corrosion on the posts. I hope that you are having a great time and i can't wait to see all the adventures that 2020 will be giving you! A special hello and thank you for your work from Quebec!
    Elizabeth xoxo
Ps. That was the message i sent you on january 29th 2020 and that you've never replied to. So I am trying again.

In the mid-1980s after 10 years of chain frustration we had reverted to rope rode and 50' foot of chain which we could replace periodically. Low cost but unsatisfactory solution as we had to pull the rode in by hand. A trip to England had a visit to Simpson Lawrence (maker of our hand pumped windlass) which solved our problem. They sold us SL 5/8" stainless steel chain with a matching gypsy which solved our problem for the next 10 years of cruising. The cost was not that shocking as the dollar and pound were upside down at that time making the price sort of affordable. We ended up buying an electric windlass a short time later with the money we saved.

Hi Guys, long time subscriber, but probably my first post! I'm a mechanical engineer / metallurgist by training and not a sailor and I don't have direct experience with chain galvanizing, but do have general steel plating & galvanizing experience. As you correctly point out, the G3 / G4 designations are to do with the tensile strength of the steel in the chain and have nothing to do with the galvanizing quality. The "High Test" and "High Tensile" or "HT" descriptions are also confusing and you do need to look at the actual specification and test sheet and stick to a reputable supplier.
The "quality" and lifespan of the galvanizing is essentially down to the thickness of the coating (how long the chain is in the molten zinc bath, plus some other factors), and how adherent it is to the substrate (mainly down to the cleaning process prior to galvanizing).
The coating is sacrificial, just like the zinc anodes on your boat, so the thicker the coating, the longer the life of the chain.
I couldn't find any international standards specifically relating to the galvanizing of chain, but BS EN ISO 1461 is a general galvanizing standard here in Europe/UK and there are equivalent American ASTM standards (A123 and A153). It would be worth asking the chain manufacturer if their chain complies with these or an equivalent standard. If you get a "glazed look" this may be a warning sign.
You can measure the thickness of the galvanizing (its typically 30 - 80 microns) by either a non-destructive meter (but I'm not sure if these would cope with the small dimensions of chain and won't be cheap) or cut a cross section of a chain link and polish it and look at the surface in a microscope, you can easily measure the coating thickness with the microscope. Any decent metallurgical lab or university engineering lab should be able to do this at not great cost. If it were me, I'd consider paying the $100 or whatever to get the coating thickness independently checked! When I was at university doing my PhD, we'd get these kind of "side-line" jobs all the time, and the fees would go 50:50 to the student and the department - kept us all in beers :)

Good info on the independent testing option for gen-public, thanks. I doubt many people would be aware of that to even consider it, even those of us with a long, related industrial career that included routine use of independent testing labs.

Thanks so much. I made the decision to replace my 250’ of chain and quickly found some great prices on chain from Miami. I ordered and it said they had it in stock. Great! Then they emailed me and said it would not be in for a few months.
At the same time a good friend recalled your video on this subject and we watched it together. Same website. Same graphics and undoubtedly the same crappy chain.
I canceled the order immediately and the only real saving grace was that their out of stock status triggered my friend to look for this video. No penalty for cancelling since it was back ordered.
Now Ive got the ACCO chain ordered and awaiting delivery. You are making a difference!

You two should of had safety glasses of while messing w/that rusty chain. If one of those medal flakes would of got into your eyes. You would have had to go to doctor & they put this suction cup to your eye & flush water onto the eyeball. Then if that don't work they numb your eye & scrape the medal off of your eyeball.
Not very fun. So PLEASE use safety glasses.
From someone who knows about this kind of stuff, bc husband worked of cars & got rust in his eyes & I had to take him to ER

The wife is a ER gal as well and I knew most of the girls that work there keeping an "eye" on me giving me proparacaine eye drops. The doc then used a cuetip under a microscope to remove it. Never again.

When roasting the coffee beens, I think it might help transfering them from the hot pan to a new cold one for the cooling part.
Anyway, a great episode 🙂 Love your vids 😊

It's funny how looking back you realize that things would have been cheaper if you would have just spent the money upfront. But it's done and dusted and it was a teachable moment. It just may have cost you a few extra thousand LOL glad to see you're getting closer and closer to getting back on the water and you're taking your time and enjoying it

I would take a look at the gypsy where it engages the chain. If that is worn out (spaces too big) it might contribute to the skipping as well.

As covid lockdowns continue, I look forward more and more to your wonderful vids. Thanks so much for all the fun once again. Don't know how you manage to do all the necessary work to get the boat back in the water, plus film what you're doing, and then edit, post content, and keep up with all your fans through the various online venues. And still you manage to produce such a high quality product with such consistency. Impressive work all around.

You could also have the new chain smoking in a bath of oil when stared in the chain locker each time. That will give it extended life. Just use vegetable oil and that’s fine for the sea. Or you can get fish oil and again natural and will breakdown in the sea as well as keeping the chain rust free

There is a company Tulsa Chain in Tulsa Ok did a show with SV Seeker and talked about this very thing. The guy talked about how to tell if galvanization is good. He said if it is rough and not super smooth then it's not good chain. He said good chain is super smooth. It makes since. You see galvanized metal on old barns still good 50 or 60 years old that don't look even close to that rusty. I realize barn tin isn't in salt water but you guys fresh water rinsed everything extremely well and look at what happened. If you see the two different types side by side you will be able to tell it easily.

You'll still have the issues of quality, even with stainless steel chains! Been there, done that. And what'll be worse is..., that you'll have spent a LOT more on an inferior grade of s/steel chain, all the while thinking that you're taking care of long term issue.
