We're starting our 6th year as liveaboard offshore sailors. And without a doubt, yacht insurance has been the most unexpected pain in the arse!
And it’s not just us, it’s every offshore USA flagged boat owner we talk to. Yacht insurance as an American sailor abroad just kinda sucks. Especially in the South Pacific (for some odd reason). I can’t offer up any words of wisdom on how to fix this mind-bending insurance system, but we have learned a lot on how to best present ourselves and our vessel.
Of course, we are NOT experts and there is still a lot we don’t know. But, if you’re a newbie buying your first boat or a fellow sailor struggling to get offshore, bluewater, around-the-world coverage, hopefully, this information will make the process suck a little less.
Here are the biggest tips we’ve learned about getting boat insurance: www.gonewiththewynns.com/how-...
    WHO ARE WE?
We’re Jason and Nikki Wynn. We been living #OffTheGrid and exploring the world for 10 years.
Our first six years of travel were an epic road trip around North America.
Now we’re on a #sailing voyage about the world. Did we have any previous sailing experience, of course not!
Neither of us is overly talented, smart, rich, lucky, or retired. But that doesn’t stop us from reaching far-flung destinations, having wild #adventures and managing everything that makes living aboard a moving vessel possible.
We’re two ordinary people that just so happen to live an extraordinary life.
And this is why we publish our lives on the world wide web. We share in hopes of inspiring you to find your adventure.

Seems like the takeaway from your friends experience where their boat washed ashore at a Marine Park is before you abandon ship, scuttle it. Hindsight is always 20/20 and when you're in the moment you probably just want to get out and away. So I understand all that. Seems like your best bet is to create a disaster plan. In the event of needing to abandon ship, before exiting the ship ensure she's taking on enough water so she goes down. You're guaranteed to lose everything (you probably were already anyway) but she won't wash ashore if she's an artificial reef miles out to sea.

I’m also a single older female about to begin living aboard, however I’m lucky in that I will be able to retain my home on land but insurance will be an expensive headache.
As others comment, To prevent abandoned vessels at sea coming to grief on land or being a navigation hazard, it is often the best decision to scuttle it prior to abandoning. Brings to mind that saying: ...step up into your life raft/dinghy.

The big question seems to be: why not flag Curiosity in a country besides the United States with more favorable insurance rates? There's a lot of info on that if you Google it, but there are several huge things to consider: one is that your vessel is now bound by the laws of whatever country you choose, and it can also affect where you're allowed to travel (as in, 2 countries with bad relations prohibit vessel entry into each others' territories). You will also lose the protections that U.S. citizens aboard a U.S. Coast Guard registered vessel are given.

Love you guys My wife and I bought our sailboat last year after being inspired by you guys and on the maiden voyage home we ran hard aground, had to get a three boat tandem tow due to loss of the rudder and have hull damage and grid seperation, total quoted expense $60000 and we had insurance and they cut a check for $60000. Our sailing dreams were almost over after the first voyage, but thankfully having insurance and its just a stepping stone toward our dreams. Repairs had to be done by proffesionals and have to be inspected, so our boat will be back in tip top shape soon

For all those worried (like I was) with no post this week & no update, Nikki & Jason decided to have a week off and they deserve a break when they want one 🙂
YT is their biggest social media platform, its where they started and would be their biggest income stream, many subscribers would go on from here to become patreons.
I am sure the average subscriber would think of Nikki & Jason as friends or family, we care if things are going wrong, we worry if they don't turn up for our weekly Sunday visit from them.
But this week I'm a little bit upset, they didn't mention anything about a week off on YT, they happily told people on other social media platforms they wouldn't be posting a video this week but not the subscribers themselves on YT.
People have been posting worried if they are ok, and that's not fair!!
A community post on YT takes no time at all & would have stopped subscribers (friends/family) worrying.

@@gonewiththewynns Gonna be honest, not sure why people use US insurance providers. The insurance companies in the United States are notorious for being either mediocre or some of the worst. If you want the best insurance whether its your life insurance or home/sailing boat insurance, Australia is among the best insurers in the world alongside Norway and Denmark.
Additionally, when you consider the exchange rate, the US dollar gives you some benefit when exchanging to Australian dollar or any other currency which is a boon.

As UA-camrs i’m sure you’re writing off virtually every penny as an expense because you travel for a living. I’m sure you are depreciating your boat on an accelerated schedule on your taxes. If not you need a better CPA. The reason I’m bringing this up is it might help you with more opportunities for insurance. You might have some options to get some type of business insurance because of what you do for a living and using your boat as a prop and the foundation of your UA-cam videos. You should also look into some type of umbrella policy that could cover your boat. For my business which is mortgages and I’m involved in real estate investing I have a $5 million umbrella policy on top of my other insurance an umbrella policies are often pretty inexpensive. I would look into having your boat owned by your LLC which I’m sure you probably have and operate as an LLC since everything you do is business oriented. So not sure if you guys have looked into that Avenue but if you haven’t that might be an option. Some type of business insurance if the boat is owned by the LLC and not you personally as well as some type of umbrella policy.
I would also suggest talking to Bobby of sailing doodles because I’m sure Bobby is operating as an LLC and he used to be involved with airplanes which have similar issues for insurance as sailboats. He sailed all over the Caribbean and Asia and has been involved with some charter companies and other businesses so he may have some insights as well.
I’ve been watching you guys since you were RVing. Love your content. Keep up the good work!

    • @Wearyman
      @Wearyman 3 роки тому +1

Interesting thoughts. One potential snag: You mentioned having the boat owned by an LLC. Given the insurance requirements for having sailing experience in order to obtain insurance, how can an LLC have captaining experience or a resume? Not sure how the insurance industry would treat that, better or worse.

    • @nedhill1242
      @nedhill1242 3 роки тому +2

@@Wearyman I’m pretty sure you have to have experience in a captains license to get insurance for a large yard, but all yachts are pretty much held an LLC‘s and considered to be charter boats for tax advantages. Same with airplanes. Anyone that owns a yacht or an airplane, well anyone smart, has it in an LLC and set up to be used for charter because of all the tax advantages. Do you have to have a pilots license and experience with an airplane you have to have a captains license and experience with a yacht. So I would think that it would be similar. Not to mention the fact that charter fleets Have insurance for their boats. The Caribbean and Asia have charter fleets all over the place Chock-full of catamarans because they’re easier to sail than monohulls and so many people with very little experience are chartering those boats. Here in Charleston or Key West or many tourist locations around America have people that operate sailboats that take people out for dinner cruise and nighttime cruises Or to experience a sailboat or to see dolphins or a million other reasons that people operate a sailboat business certainly have insurance as well. None of these people are operating these boats in their name as privately owned. They are all businesses Not just for tax purposes but liability as well.

LoL asking bobby for advice on anything is a riot. What a train wreck. Makes bad judgements. Sails alone into bad weather on a poorly prepped and maintained boat. Sails out of his insured region without a new region rider. Poor seamanship. Loses anchor off bow, fouls his engine. Fire. That’s about half of the world. He’s done more sailing than 99.5% of the population in America actually when you consider how few people actually own a sailboat and done more than simply sail around their local area he’s probably in the 1 or 2% in terms of miles sealed and places he’s been. I’ve worked on boats and houses most of my life and I have seen the work he’s done and it’s been perfectly fine. Just as good as any other popular Sailing channel.
How far have you sailed? Where have you been? How many miles and how many places have you been? That you can document.
I’m not a fan boy, I’m just someone that believes in truth. The haters are mostly jealous. If people simply had an issue with some of the things he did they would simply say that in a polite way. Haters act like haters for different reasons. And a lot of what people like you are saying is libelous and slanderous. It could also easily be considered misinformation, which is against the TOS of UA-cam and could get you banned. Why? Because you guys are going way beyond simply stating an opinion.
I think it’s curious how much you haters hate on the guy. You say you’re not jealous but we know you are. And I love the way a couple of you attack my sexuality. Normally that’s the behavior of someone that hasn’t come out of the closet. Passive aggressiveness and talk about homosexuality is classic signs of someone in the closet. A few of you are showing classic signs of self-loathing homosexuals still in the closet. Maybe you should read a few Jordan Peterson books!

Do you watch sailing doodles? Bobby recently had a video talking about the aftermath of his sailboat catching fire when he was making a crossing from the US to the Caribbean and the fired did $100,000 damage to his boat and he had to be rescued by the Coast Guard and his insurance company denied the claim. So yeah, even when you have insurance, you often don’t have insurance! Because companies hate paying claims and they’ll find any reason not to pay the claim if they can.
If they are smart they operate as an LLC because everything they do is oriented around business. Such as an accelerated depreciation schedule for their boat. Especially if the LLC owns the boat instead of them personally. In that scenario there could be some options for them to get business insurance and an umbrella policy. Actually an umbrella policy could be an option under many scenarios, which is something they should look into.

A friend of mine who lives in Pensacola his lost two boats to hurricanes one from a secure Anchorage and another from a secure dock.. I assume at this point that the insurance company has paid out more to him than they have gotten from him. So the 11,000 that you quoted sounds like nothing compared to the 50,000 he's now gotten for his totaled sailboats. Your boat is worth considerably more than his since with both of his boats he had to do a lot of work to get them to be nice safe and sailable. I was taught the number one rule of insurance from the business manager of the University that I attended back in the 1970s. He was advising me on what we needed to in sure for our Sailing Club. He said that we needed to insure what we could not afford to lose and I believe the bottom line became that we just needed the liability insurance since our Boats were worth less than a thousand each at the time. I'm glad you were able to get your insurance for the next year and get that off your mind

Cruising vessel insurance is very similar to general aviation aircraft insurance. Probably even the same underwriters. There’s only a handful of companies, and rates are driven based on where it is operated (I.e. where it is based) and the experience and qualifications of the named insured.

  • @RogerWilco1

Here is a tip: You need to haul the boat for bottom paint periodically anyway, so when you do (in normal years) have the boat surveyed at that time. Even though you don't have to do that, this will mean that the date of last survey is fresher. The survey is a huge wealth of information for them to understand the condition of the boat, and a history of them is even more valuable. It proves your boat resume is correct by a reputable third party. Unfortunately you haven't been to New Zealand or Australia yet so you didn't get a chance to do this before COVID hit, but if you had, that might have changed the game.
I wonder if the US flag is part of the problem. You absolutely should be getting better quotes because your risk is objectively much lower. I think your 250 mile limit on your initial plan was quite generous (given me experience when I had the same experience you had back then.) But now, you have thousands of miles with no mishaps and you have done quite well at demonstrating your competency and responsibility. Further, money is cheap, so insurance companies should be falling all over themselves to write policies. So something else is at work here. It isn't you.

"The big question seems to be: why not flag Curiosity in a country besides the United States with more favorable insurance rates? There's a lot of info on that if you Google it, but there are several huge things to consider: one is that your vessel is now bound by the laws of whatever country you choose, and it can also affect where you're allowed to travel (as in, 2 countries with bad relations prohibit vessel entry into each others' territories). You will also lose the protections that U.S. citizens aboard a U.S. Coast Guard registered vessel are given". Quote from the Wynns above ...

Most if not all marinas in Australia require insurance and registration. Some insurance companies are looking at skipper qualifications (not a thing yet) to get insurance too, it certainly makes getting insurance easier. If you are a ocean crossing yacht you may need the skipper to have an Ocean Yacht-master qualification or similar in the future.
