  • Ready to express your inner cookie artist? Well then, you're in the right place! Welcome to Lesson 11 of "Julia M. Usher's Ultimate Cookie Decorating Series"!
    NOTE: This video is one of 16 videos originally filmed for my DVD series, which was discontinued in November 2014. Select videos from the series will be released to UA-cam over time, but my app will remain the only place where you can find all of the original DVD videos. One of Julia's ultimate cheater techniques, rubber-stamping requires little inherent artistic skill, just a food-safe rubber stamp and an understanding of basic inking and imprinting techniques! This video covers the basics of rubber-stamping on cookies, including everything from distinguishing beginner from advanced stamps to the merits of wood- versus acrylic-mounted stamps.
    IF YOU LIKE THIS VIDEO, please give it a thumbs up and subscribe to my channel. It is only through your support that I can afford to make more videos. THANK YOU!
    A NOTE ON RUBBER STAMPS:
    Not all stamps and ink pads are food grade. I always recommend using food-grade tools on any products intended for consumption. Currently, the best sources of food-grade stamps and ink pads are:
    www.sweetstampen.com/index.asp and www.wilton.com/. A flat, folded stack of paper towels can also substitute for an uninked ink pad.

    Those cookies look incredible Julie. I have a few tips for you as regards to the stamp pads and wooden stamps that hopefully might be some use to you. Although please don't think I'm dictating, lol. I don't make cookies as incredible as these. But these ideas might help you out and save you a few pennies too. And I know you mentioned in this video that your view can be obstructed by the wooden block on the stamps, so hopefully this info will help.
    I am a crafter and use stamps a lot in my projects. There are products from Ranger called Cut n' dry foam. They have a whole range of different stamp pad foams that come in 8x10 sheets (2 to a pack I think). The purple packaging foam is like the brown pad you were using in this tutorial. The yellow packaging one is like the harder felt pad you had there but didn't use. I thought it might save you money to buy these larger foam sheets and that way you can make your ink pads as big or small as you like and just store them in air tight boxes or ziplock bags. Also, if you find wooden stamps a bit awkward to stamp because of the wood, you can unmount them and use them on your acrylic blocks like the other loose stamps. You can simply pop the stamps in the microwave for 10 secs and peel off the stamp from the wood. The sticky foam backing will most likely be useless therefore, you simply peel off the red rubber stamp and you can buy a product similar to the foam sheets that is specifically for mounting rubber stamps with the backing that adheres to acrylic blocks. You place your rubber stamp back onto the sticky side, cut around the image. Then peel off the backing paper which has the dry cling backing that adheres to your blocks and peels off exactly like your other stamps. Its called EZ Mount or the other brand is Kling Mount backing foam. You can get all these products on Amazon, or at least I know we can in the UK.
    Hope that helps you out some Julie. I love seeing how all the different craft products can cross over and be used elsewhere. Lee xx

    Hi thanks for the tutorial. Now to try on cookies. A tip when re-inking you could use the back of a spoon to spread the ink rather than waste the colour on a paper towel. TFS.

    • @JuliaMUsher
      @JuliaMUsher  3 роки тому +1

      I use the paper towel specifically to blot up excess food coloring; otherwise it is too easy to over-ink the stamp and get a messy application. A spoon would not soak up extra coloring.

    Hey Julia, do you have any tips on shipping cookies? It's winter, so they won't be heat damaged, but I'm worried about them scratching in the container since it will likely be thrown around a bit. Would a piece of parchment paper between each cookie in a sealed container be fine or is there another way to help keep the icing from being scratched? I'm planning on doing some stamping so I don't want the stamp to rub off.

    Use a gift or credit card to apply food colouring, it will press ink into pad, so you lose less and it will keeping it moist longer.

    • @JuliaMUsher
      @JuliaMUsher  3 роки тому +1

      As long as you want. As long as the eggs are salmonella-free to start, the icing sets very fast and is high in sugar content, and so not prone to bacterial growth. But, as I believe I mentioned to you the other day, you can always make this icing with meringue powder to avoid the risk of salmonella. I give meringue powder substitutions in the recipe.

    Hello Julia. I ordered some stamps online, and three of them were labeled as “gently used”. There is absolutely no ink stained onto it, so it appears they have been kept clean. However, I do want to sanitize them. I was reading your “Q&A” on sanitize stamps, and I want to make sure I am doing this properly. I can take regular chlorine bleach (like what is used to wash clothes) and I am guessing dilute it in water to wash the rubber stamps? I am also guessing they need to be rinsed after sanitizing with bleach? Is there a specific amount of bleach that’s used? This is going to be my first time rubber stamping (not a chef, just thought they’d make nice gifts). Thank you for all these videos!

    • @marielpacific9275
      @marielpacific9275 5 років тому

      Julia M Usher I got bleach and sure enough, there were directions on how to mix it properly for sanitizing. I had no idea. Thank you for taking time to answer a question with an obvious answer. I love all of your creations.

    • @JuliaMUsher

      Yes, I reserve a pad for each color, and I typically don't wash in between. You could, but I don't because I enclose the pads in sealed containers between uses. I have a link to the pads I use in the video description under the video. I typically have loads of notes and source info in that area, so that's always a good place to check first.
