- So, you're out flying your drone, minding your own business when Karen goes for you and your drone! What to do when this happens? There is a simple solution that doesn't take any technical knowledge and may save your drone from being destroyed by Karen's wrath!

Only happened to me twice in several years of flying, both times I just asked them to call the police and I'd chat with them when they arrive because they know the law. Worked a charm both times. I do think there's growing number of people in society who's motto seems to be "we're not happy unless you're not happy" - I think the resistance to broadcast flyerID stems from this
Aye, I've seen the number of reported instances of Karen Attacks increase over the past 3 years that I've been flying.
Good tips. Only had a couple of Karens hassle me over the years; one being the caretaker at Campbell Castle who came out of his little hut and climbed up the hill I was perched on to tell me off. Later that day, some stupid old bint by another ruined castle came over all confrontational because I was flying a POV around the ruins. It just stuns me that people think half a kilo of plastic poses an existential danger to stone ruins with 8 feet thick walls which have survived seiges and wars for hundreds of years.
People just want to find something to complain about...
If I'm flying legally and someone came up to me in a negative way they better fkn walk back the way they came!

I've never had an issue with drones, infact once I stopped and had a good chat to a guy flying and he was more than happy to explain the hobby and explain the equipment. Great guy he was.
I've only ever had one negative interaction in 3 years of flying.

That Karen IS a dodgy character! I've since found out that he carries around a loaded WW2 Lugar and has fired it in the direction of 'trespassers' previously, so I think I made the right decision in bolting ;)

@@WindsweptRobert We have a lot of Karens near us, mainly the 'Keyboard Warrior' variety 🙄 I took my Mini2 up for a very quick shakedown flight a couple of months ago after a prolonged period of inclement weather where I hadn't used it. Within minutes the local 'Rant & Moan' Facebook group had a post from a Karen (including a photo of my drone - a tiny black speck in a clear sky!!), warning everyone that a drone was flying nearby and that it was probably casing people's properties with the intention of burglary!!!! I did the honourable thing though, owning up that it was me and nothing to worry about - "Don't panic Captain Mainwaring!!!" 😆

Totally agree, great advice. Sorry so many people have given you grief over our hobby. After I had two or three Karen's melt down on me I changed my flight habits completely. I choose launch spots with limited visibility so I cannot be seen. I never approach my target directly, always fly a good kilometer half circle so you approach from a different direction. When I land I also do not fly directly back to my location and fly as low as possible. Where I live is more forested than Scotland, flying low over the trees makes it impossible to visually track my drone. I even have my wife drop the drone off while I fly from elsewhere. Since I began taking these precautions I have not had a confrontation. Karens just can't find me!

I think the Covid lockdowns had a lot to do with it too.
That was such a well created video with good advice. I have flown in seven different counties including England and Scotland recently and have nerver had an issue, bar one. A policeman in Sienna politely told me that I couldn't fly in a particular area and walked away as I willingly complied.
Most people are fascinated, but my policy is always not to draw attention to myself, and so far, it has worked beautifully.

I've only had the one negative encounter in 3 years, and it could easily have been a very positive encounter had the first few seconds started differently...
I have invest a couple bucks in a FAA Licensed Commercial Drone Pilot dayglow yellow vest with a clear pocket for my certificate. You're allowed to wear it even if you're just an entertainment drone pilot with a TRUST cert. LOL
But "looking" official keeps most Karen's away.
It's a great idea and quite a few pilots do this :)

Well, obviously you'd lock your motor up first and it would be well out of sight...
How about bring a paper with all regulations. With the first rule in big letters, DON'T DISRUPT A DRONE OPERATOR IN FLIGHT with the penalty/ consequence when convicted.
That's a great suggestion, Truth, and many drone pilots already do this. I'm not convinced that will stop the blinkered Karen who is dead-set on confronting you though.
Shiny surfaces like a car roof, they think it's water. I had my mini 3 pro try and land on fog! I rocked it forward and backward as I decended and that did the job to get it down. Little tip for ya there :)

I think the Karen could find themselves in a tricky position of interfering with the pilot (PIC). Whether you are in the air or on the ground you are the pilot.

Any Karen distracting your piloting should be regarded as a breach of a sterile cockpit for take-off and landing.

Never really had any problems, I've found that if I'm CAA registered etc and show them my operators ID on the back of the controller, they bugger off
That would work for most I'll bet, but you'll always get that stubborn Karen who just will not listen to reason

Can’t help but think those irritating auditors are spoiling the fun of genuine recreational drone flyers. Going out of their way to irritate people. Just my thoughts.
Yep spot on these Auditors are going to kill off 249g drones.
The frauditors are decreasing in number and the ones that persist are seeing a massive decrease in views and revenue. They'll eventually move on to something else as their goose runs out of golden eggs

Hilarious video. Fell off the sofa with the banter used and acting skills Windy Bob.. But on a serious note avoid confrontations.. The one and only I ever had was 5 years ago and it was my fault as I had no idea I had flown over a Storks nest.. There was a nature observer taking notes about the status of the species and I just happened to unknowingly fly into the scene.. Anyway I mostly over the sea now. I need to make another vid soon b4 the batteries perish.

Too true! While it's not happened in the last couple of weeks, I had a real run of people giving me a hard time over the summer. I swear it's getting worse though, this year has been particularly bad. People are soooo aggressive, right off the bat. I am always as nice as pie (but don't take any nonsense😉) Like they always say 'You can only diplomatic, with diplomatic people' Keep up the good work. Cheers. SAA

One off my favourite fly points, is on from a bench between a small lake and a bunch of trees. Getting the drone out it's not the problem, but RTH to the launch point is not a good idea (DJI mini 2 se, so no obstacle avoidance).
After getting it up into the air, I manually change the home point in the DJI fly app to a patch of grass at the other side of the lake (150 metres away from launch point). If I do lose connection, or something like that, it's not going to land in the tree hanging over me, but in the grass at the other side of the lake.
You just made me realise that I'm also 'Karen' prepared this way 😂. Thanks mate!
Aye, you'll need to make sure you have a clear RTH path - just set RTH to 120m and you'll be fine.

I visit all sorts of places around Scotland in the summer and winter with my drone and so far I've never had any issue. If however someone wishes to tell me off for flying my drone i have one thing to say D.I.L.L.I.G.A.F 😂 I'm not a believer in walking or running away when I'm doing nothing wrong.
If you ignore people all will end rather quickly and usually peacefully. Same with my camper people enjoy telling me you can't park there... my reply simply Who can't because I just did... from that point onwards I just ignore them.
Sadly these days with people's self entitlement on what others do / look like / love / enjoy / laugh at is all triggers for people that think they are better and more important.
Again don't engage in the situation and usually there will be not situation to resolve 🙂 Happy flying and you always seem to find amazing spots to fly at i would like to get some shots around Glasgow with the drone and call me stupid but I'm thinking 5th nov would be nice for some firework shots not sure the legal side of that though? Might be an interesting video topic?

I too launch my drone from the roof of my vehicle. I also like to sit in my car with door or window open and fly from there, but only if its not busy with wires etc, this reduces the chance of a Karen attack. You will just look like a guy looking at his phone. Also screen is easier to see. Never had any Karens approach, only one tourist showing interest. Mind you I'm usually high up in the Hills.

My friend, I already said that I'm going to Scotland next April, I'll do a part of NC 500, but I saw in some apps that the almost all highlands west of Inverness is a no fly zone. You've already flight there?
Much of the Highlands is used as RAF training and so there are many red zones where you can't fly your drone. You'll need to research it carefully :)

there is also an option for change home point using the map too, you open the map up in the change home point options and you can draw a line to where you want it too land. ive never tried it though. might be easier on a big screen like an ipad but i would imagine its quite fiddly on a phone. ill have to give it a go
I have a video showing exactly how to do this, but it's less precise for this particular situation :)
You are not allowed to use your phone screen to fly it if you are on you own. Perhaps you had a 'spotter'. 'Walk away in the opposite direction.' Give over, you must be able to see your drone at all times. The 'spotter must be alongside you.
I did laugh, but you're right of course, could be a Karen with a gun/blade, ya never know!

Hi Robert, that was a fun video to watch and good to see Lassie getting some airtime. I agree with siding on the no confrontation. BTW, I recently upgraded to the Mini 4 Pro, however my Mini 2s will continue to fly. Maybe in a year I will get that Pocket 3!
I am looking at the pocket 3, but I'm not short of cameras atm! I'm not even considering the mini 4 Pro. I think my next drone (If I ever get another) will be a Mavic

For me, i am at the 50/50 mark no matter where i go; 50/50 either hate me or curious. I flew yesterday at lunch, was 78F out here in IL and ages 20's to 70's of people in the park and not one was negative and most posed for me to take there picture! was a nice change!
I've only had 1 neg interaction in 3 years of flying :)

While I agree with a non confrontational attitude Robert, I'm afraid I can't see myself genuflecting to a 'Karen'. I/You, have every right legally to fly a drone in a responsible way and I like you am registered with the state aviation authority and I have my ID on my drone as required. There comes a time when 'Karens' cannot take over the licencing laws with regards drones..! Next they'll be 'tellin' us where to walk...etc. 😠😠☘
Always safer to err on the side of caution, jj. Especially these days when people are crazy and are more likely to be carrying some kind of weapon that could do damage to you or your property.
I've seen that Karen before he is a bit of an nuisance, popping up now and again. But with your new found friends, you have enough clout behind you. Slangiv var.

Were you alone because your drone goes out of sight, firstly behind the castle ruins then beyond the far coast? Where was your 'spotter' as you appear to be flying it from a controller with a screen. I may be wrong but if not then 2 people are required. You did not impress the ranger at Loch Doon either on another video.

@@WindsweptRobert Because it plays havoc with the onboard compass. Many are the flights that have come to grief as a result.
I've shown quite clearly in a couple of previous videos that flying from your car roof (one time I even launched from a box of nuts, screws, bolts and nails that was sitting on the car roof. It had no effect whatsoever on the drone.

From the Mini 3 Pro user guide:
'Tall buildings and large metal structures may affect the accuracy of the
onboard compass and GNSS system. It is recommended to keep the aircraft at least 5 m away from
structures.'
"may". It also says on boxes of pills that you 'may' suffer side-effects'. I don't go by what it says on paper, I test it out in the real world to find out what the real facts are.
