the scene towards the end involving the sea was incredibly moving - saw it on Netflix and while I can understand its worth seeing on a big screen still on my TV it was stunning.
the air was sucked out of me for 3 full minutes in that scene, completely arresting
I was lucky enough to see it in a theatre it was amazing
I saw it on mobile and still it was fantastic
I feel incredibly luck I got to see this in 4K with Dolby atmos. The sound mixing is incredible.
Annoying Netflix do some Atmos but only on a few selected devices, even though they introduced it onto the platform 18 months ago.
I mean that's cool and all, but TBH with a film this personal and introspective, the sound quality is tantamount to a single sprinkle on a cupcake. A nice add-on but ultimately unnecessary for you to fully enjoy it. Watch it wherever it's most convenient and available to you (if it's your living room, go for it): it's so good that it's a masterpiece independent of the format
@@SweetJeopardy I disagree, there is no comparison in watching a movie on a 1080p tv with shitty speakers and a cinema, the same could be said with a 4k tv and great speakers, there just isn't really a comparison since watching it with worse equipment does affect the experience.
I was lucky enough to see this on a huge screen at the Cambridge Film Festival - beautiful film, demands a proper cinema release.

I got to see this two weeks ago on the big screen and I am so glad I did. It absolutely blew me away. I'm a 16 year old studying film for a level and we're doing global film at the moment, so I really was lucky to be able to see Roma early. Also, I was able to go to a screenwriting lecture with Cuaron last weekend, which was the biggest cherry on top!
10/10 film. So so special.
ROMA just might be Alfonso Cuarón's best film. However, don't watch it on Netflix. I foresee people starting it and turning it off after 5 minutes because it's in black-and-white, subtitled, a period piece, and slowly paced. This movie deserves your full attention in the theater instead of on TV.
Sure but most people will have to drive hours to find a theater that shows it. Netflix refused to give it a proper release.
@@carllaitenberger9984 I know. It sucks because I really do think this movie deserves more than Netflix. I'm lucky that I live in NYC and ROMA is playing in two theaters in the city. If you can see it on the big screen, please do. It's quite the moviegoing experience.
The great majority of folks will never be able to watch it in a theater unless they are in some place like NYC in December.

Just saw this in NYC, and my god. Such a beautiful film. I don't know the last time a film touched my soul this intimately. If it's in a theater near you, it's quite an experience. The more I think about it, the more I want to see it again.

The commentary is always the same with this: a deeply personal, meticulously crafted, empathy machine, and I suppose I agree, except for the last past. I know I'm in the extreme minority but I'm sad to say this film felt like chugging water for 2+ hours. It's not that I can't appreciate artistic, austere films...I'd say that Shoplifters or even Beale Street are far more impressive films from this year...this one just didn't speak to me, and it's not entirely clear what Cuarón spent all that effort trying to say, aside from the fact that this time, this place and these kinds of people happened to be important to him growing up. Perhaps I'm missing something completely, or my own current state of mind is blocking my empathy, but I didn't care about what happened to these characters any more than I care for the average person walking down the street. It felt like mere surveillance. Perhaps someone can help me understand better. What was this about? I genuinely WANT to love it.
I felt that, too - a need to know what I was supposed to feel, or supposed to have learned by the end of it. Someone commented that it's about how important the nanny is, that while a family is falling apart she was there and helped keep it together, despite her own personal traumas going on at the time. The director based it on his own childhood apparently, so that perspective does make the film better for me.
That makes us all human. We get different responses, different perspectives. As for me, I was drawn into it since I could very well relate to the story, I was raised by a nanny who I am truly grateful for up to this day. So in a way the movie connected to me on a very personal way. No one should persecute you for not feeling what others are feeling nor you should force yourself to like it. :)
It felt like I was seeing my life being displayed in a movie. It felt mundane, except the divorce and maid, everything else looked like some experience I've had before, and honestly good for them but it isn't really all that impressive
there are many things you might not be getting from the movie (sets, cinematography and tone), but since you mentioned your own current state of mind not allowing you to have empathy, it might be through there. I interpreted it as mainly an ode to "empleadas" or "muchachas" meaning servants, or "the help", which is what a lot of upper middle class and richer have in Mexico, and all Latin America really. "Class" is still very old school like some of the super rich in the states have, dad works, mom has cocktails and events 24/7. In turn these servant girls become full time nannies and sentimentally speaking in a lot of cases, it's them who raised these kids. (Alfonso Cuarón), Recognizing his privilege and paying respects to the less fortunate women who raise generations of privileged and in some cases influential/good examples of Latin Americans. Nothing short of an immersive movie with a huge heart.
My mum, at that time and in Mexico City, drove like the woman in the film :-D

@@sherlockholmes8528 Hell no, Del Toro is a great director, he's too visionary but his movies (excluding Pan's Labyrinth) normally have really forgettable scripts. Inarritu is an amazing director, and Cuaron has made Children of Men (A much better film than Roma in my eyes), which solidifies him as an amazing director. But Denis Villeneuve is much better than them in terms of directing.
I understand what Kermode means. Like you can't help but marvel at how the scenes were shot on a technical level, which can be an obstacle to immersing yourself in the story. I saw it in theaters and I am planning to watch it on Netflix again to focus more on the story.
I found it visually fantastic but emotionally it never really grabbed me even when it reaches the crescendos at the end.

I just watched Roma and on netflix, incredible filmmaking and heartbreaking and heartwarming. Personally i think straight to netflix is wonderful for a film like this in a way, like oscar seasom buzz, it allows the ‘average’ film audience a chance to try something slightly perhaps out of their comfort zone. and white film is getting so much coverage from netflix is a great thing. Great art should be able to be experienced by all

Tell me about it. If you are a film fan and living in the south/eastern part of Europe ( Balcans etc. ) then the closest cinema venue where you can see this movie is in Berlin :(

@@SirChesterBellington I know they're showing it at Curzon cinemas (which I'd imagine is where you went), there are only 13 of them in the UK 7 of which are in London so that's what I was getting at really

It really is the best film of the year to me. Maybe of the decade. It's incredible. It gave me that same feeling I felt when watching There Will Be Blood in theaters a decade ago.
I hope that this film the best movie in the Oscars .
It's one of those films you can watch with your ears... I love that line.

Lowkey the best scene in the film is when Sofía tells Cleo that they are always alone, no matter what people say.
That line kept playing in my head for hours after the movie. It was so sad the way she said it. But beautiful film!
I like the scene where Cleo and the kid are lying down saying they r dead.

The thing is the netflix deal makes the film more accessible. Roma will never be released in a lot of third world countries hell in my country it's either it wont be released or it'll be released in the first half of next year (for example The Favourite is coming out in Feb of 2019 in my country). It being available on Netflix means a lot of people will get to see it much earlier. Similar to Annihilation which didn't get a theatrical release in my country but I still got to watch it relatively the same time as everyone else because it got a netflix release.
@@TheKevlar4 Exactly! And let's not forget a lot of film studios didn't want to fund this film for Cuaron anyway. A Mexican, non-english, black and white film? Good luck selling that to anyone but Netflix.

If Netflix gives filmmakers like Cuaron the artistic freedom to fully realize their vision without a studio's conditions for greenlighting it, I as a film lover am here for it. Maybe we'll get more films for actual adults! I so envy my parents as young adults in the seventies having films like "The Godfather" or "One flew over the cuckoo's nest" or even "The Exorcist" as the decades' biggest box office hits. That would NEVER happen under today's corporate obsession with blockbusters and franchises. Bravo to Cuaron and Netflix. Watch this film!

I was lucky enough see this sitting next to Cuaron in his hometown Mexico city in May. Amazing guy
I saw it and this is a movie for the THEATER.... on an ipad people will just click away within 20 minutes because it builds slowly (on purpose)... .. and sticking to it is what gives you that trance feeling.... (like gravity) that also had slow parts, oh boy does it pay off! if you do watch it on Netflix, please do not let anyone interrupt you, stick to it from beginning to end...
also just like Gravity this movie is immersive, to make you feel you are there with them....there is one particular scene in the hospital, will be one of the best scenes in cinema ....so powerful...to the point of being uncomfortable because in a theater it makes you feel as if you were inside that room....
My thoughts are exactly in line with Mark's in that I do think that there were large sections of the film when I was admiring the artistry rather than being lost in the film. There were also some serious gut punches, though, and it would be seriously disingenuous to suggest that it isn't a remarkably human film but I did often feel at a distance from what was going on on-screen, which stops me from ranking it as quite the masterpiece that others have. It is beautiful, though - sometimes aesthetically if not emotionally - and well worth seeing on the big screen. I'm actually shocked and very pleased that it was shown in cinemas here in South Africa, unlike the Ballad of Buster Scruggs, which was released only on NetFlix and clearly also begs for the biggest screen possible.

Roma's cinematography, production design and sound are stunning. With that said, I found it more exploitative than empathic. He could learn a thing or two from Kore-Eda on how to do a humanist film properly.
In terms of cinematography the lighting in every shot was fantastic, but I would've liked less panning shots.
Am I the only one having issues with the sound? There was a screening the day before it came out on Netflix that I managed to go to with a few lines of dialogue that were subtitled but completely inaudible, I figured it was just a slightly unfinished cut of the film and Netflix just couldn’t be bothered to correct it to send to the cinemas but as I’m actually rewatching it now it’s still happening. It’s not common and it’s not something I’d mark the film down for but it almost seems like a glitch in a video game or something, very odd

Just watched it and had the same issue . Several times a character was off screen and subtitles were appearing without any audio - kinda took me out of it when it happened.
Same here. Without the subtitles, I wouldn't know there was dialogue going on many times.
technically brilliant, ambitious, a personal love letter from the director - BUT personally to ME, not very interesting, a little heartbreaking, but I felt that ultimately it was kinda depressing and distant, very mundane for the most part - at least to me, but I have a very different sense of what's normal and so on
I found this film fascinating. We take the position of the passive observer, part of a scene where we have little control and simply watch as life unfolds quite beautifully and yet in a quite horrific manner - with the use of stark and disorientating violence as a path out of a sense of surrender of powerlessness. I found myself looking for Alfonso in this film, wondering if this was a reflection on his own lack of agency growing up, both within the family and in the wider political systems. The technical feats and mesmerising cinematography, the focus on beauty in the fim appear to tell a tale of his own coping mechanism in regaining a sense of control over that experience. Was he Paco, or Cleo or any other character in the film? It is such a compelling film that grows on you with every passing moment and one is left captivated by the way, even in the face of death, the household is held together by the strong females while the male figures go missing. Shall try and catch this on the big screen.

‘You watch the film with your ears’. Hence why you need to see it with a Surroundsound system. I saw it twice in the cinema and even the second time I was aught out thinking people in the audience were making odd noises...
What a GREAT review by Mark Kermode, absolutely spot on and virtually note perfect. My only quibble is he doesn’t mention Tarkovsky. IMHO that’s where the tableau-creating, long take, ‘camera frame as a canvas’ technique possibly originates from (but I’m sure we could all offer up names of many of the greats here.)

They're very different films. Fellini's Roma is a kaleidoscopic look at Italian society, Cuaron's Roma is a beautifully tender humanist film about one maid

Apparently I'm the only person not absolutely loving this film. Imo it was pretty dated in it's narration. If I wanna see a Tarkovskij, a Bergman or a Fellini, I'll watch their movies and will probably get a deeper meaning out of them. This is not modern enough for my taste and not interesting enough to be Intellectual gold.
Am I being a hard ass here??

Cuaron used the one take thing to perfection in both Gravity and Children of Men which really put you in the heart of the dystopian apocalypse.
I live in Cornwall, there goes any chance of me ever getting to see this on a big screen.
So a film that needs to be seen on the big screen is exclusively being shown in very expensive London centric cinemas. Great, Good one Netflix...
The film's substance truly transcends the format. It's akin to reading Nabokov in a Kindle vs. printed book form. Sure, a book smells nice and looks pretty, but the beauty of the words transcends the medium. Watch it wherever it's most convenient for you...just don't miss it.
For me, there was an underlying, multifaceted representation of military energy and male domination versus trust in nature and female communal energy. (Eg The tree yoga stance during military training, the smaller car to fit living rather than ‘doctor’ status, the ability to ignore the regimented military drumming band to get out of beat up car and attend to family, and, what brought me to tears, the walking into sea 🌊 - knowing she can’t swim - knowing the waves (nature) will bring her and the children back with trust, guidance and cooperation. Also the 🦀 image during wedding (big claw capture) versus divorce (small claw release).
Yes, the film was a slow burn and I am certain I missed many references - but only because it was so rich and accomplished and multi-level in such a gentle yet also devastatingly powerful way.
I can’t help but think the ultimate message is that the message re: equality for community and nature, friendship, love and sharing over aggression, militarisation, selfishness and entitlement has never been more resonant nor relevant nor important than right now.
The art house cinema in my city is showing the film so of course I went to see it, and it left me in pieces, what a film.
This film was incomparable to the other best film nominees, absolutely amazing
So frustrating this isn't being shown in Bristol cinemas because Netflix has decided we should be watching movies on a TV. FFS :(

This film is stunning.
It has no drama and I disagree, the sound is actually poor- difficult for me to understand the dialogue, even when I speak perfect Spanish- and the performances are bland, I don’t get the praise for a performance if the director doesn’t shot close-ups of his actors. The visuals are amazing, and the representation of our Latin culture and it’s imagery felt fresh. Good movie, not at the level of his best effort: Children of Men.
It's good ..... beautifully shot ....brilliantly acted .... not alot happens, but so much happens .... but as brilliant as it is, and it is .... nothing tbat hasnt been told or seen before, we seem to live in an age where anything even slightly artistic or avant-garde is overly lauded.
Why's that ? Because us men always let woman down, almost as stereotypical as that scene.

Wow so many crappy films seem to be nominated for Oscars these days...this is one of them. Whatever happened to drama, suspense, plot and storytelling in movies. Do people actually believe that this movie is as good as a movie like Shawshank Redemption or No country for old men? This movie was just as bad as Moonlight which won a few years ago. I guess I don't get the appeal of Cuaron's movies. Gravity was just an ok movie too.

This is the kind of movie that makes me angry at myself for not liking it, because it seems like it worked for so many other moviegoers. Unfortunately, Roma left me completely cold, mainly because it seemed like such an overly calculated film. Nothing felt organic
Honestly the most overrated movie I’ve seen recently. I heard it was supposed to be beautiful, but ultimately the aesthetic visuals and imagery are not enough to cancel out the lack of profound statement. Maybe some will disagree due to the prevalent themes of war and the death of a child, etc. However, a lot of movies include things that are sad or emotional. Ultimately the movie didn’t say anything special or unique. I felt that Roma was trying to make some point that never landed. It doesn’t seem to be a popular opinion, but I would absolutely not recommend.
I just finished watching this movie. I really didn’t see what the big hype was. A nanny lives with a middle class family in Mexico. She gets pregnant from a loser who later scares her into having a miscarriage. The kids almost drown. What a depressing movie. The doctor leaves his wife and kids. What was the plot? If I had to rate it between 1-5, I would rate it “0”.

No connection to the characters, random time jumps that took me out of the movie, some of the shots became absurdly annoying where I thought 'jesus Cuaron stop throwing it in our faces, we get how good you can film your scenes'. And the message wasssssss.... Men are bad???. From a filmmaking standpoint, this deserves the Oscars for cinematography and sound, but from the perspective of writing and a movie overall, I believe it was a film that was trying too hard to be an arthouse. The best scene in the movie is also the most depressing, but the main character wasn't built up enough for me to actually care about her life
This isn't a "Lower Middle Class" family!
There is no justification for saying that _Roma_ is getting a 'proper' theatrical release. Even given that it would, at best, be shown only in what are called the 'art-houses', Netflix seem to be restricting its theatrical release still further (in the UK to Curzon cinemas and to a house equipped with 70mm projection). I help to run a film society and we cannot , as things stand, show the film in the cinema we hire. This is a disgrace and I refuse to support Netflix by seeing the film for as long as they keep up this narrow and contemptible attitude. I refuse to support Cuaron, too, for going along with Netflix's contempt in restricting its theatrical release.

Languid, slow, and ultimately irritating. Cleo is a one-dimensional character. We learn nothing of her thoughts, she never vocalizes her perspective, is largely a pitiable victim of the bad behavior of ... men. Her validation comes from her heroic rescue of the boss's kids, and her reward is to continue working as a maid (she happily trundles laundry to the roof in the final scene), but now for her new-found sister, the lady of the house. The status quo, with a dollop of feminism, is reaffirmed.
I agree, I kept waiting for a pay off to justify keeping Cleo and the viewer (via the camera) in such a stuck, passive state. Maybe the plot, maybe an ideological / thematic pay off to explain it all, but there was just some kind of universal sisterhood at the end. I wanted to understand Cleo more, but I don't think the film does.
That's exactly what's intended for. Cuaron's memoirs of a turbulent time of his childhood in a Mexico City neighborhood environment four decades ago. The central role is his nanny Libo, an indigenous girl marginalized, segregated, discriminated, where she had no voice, nobody would be interested in hearing her thoughts, she was nobody, no higher academic education, with disadvantage in Spanish which was her second language, in a society that is so racist, classist, male chauvinist. Still, she finds the emotional ties in a reciprocal way with the kids first, portraits of innocence for discrimination, then with the mother and grandmother after a series of events. The universality of Roma is that you find this kind of cases of subtle abuse in every society in any form or another today, 2019. No wonder expert directors, producers, actors and so have awarded it. After all, is Cuaron's honest honor for the women that in part made him what he is now, through a very personal project. No other pretentions, no commercial drive or so. If he had wanted to make a money successful movie he would have done another Gravity or Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. There's a lot more interesting to say about Roma but don't have the time, sorry.
me gusta tu comentario , no lo pudiste describir mejor. No soy fan del cine de arte y por lo mismo no veo peliculas similares pero siendo de ciudad de Mexico no podia dejar pasar la pelicula. Me parece que una persona me esta platicando sobre sus recuerdos de niño conforme avanza la pelicula.
Boring story line and painfully slow. I stuck with it until the end but it never picked up. The critics are wrong and act like sheep. Trust me, it is a crap storyline. Some nice shots but nothing special and easy to do
Honestly the movie was boring and lame. The only interesting part was the Tlatelolco massacre.
Boring and lame is your point of view but there was nothing about the Tlatelolco massacre which was in October 1968, the scene in Roma is an event in June 1971, the time Roma refers to, called El Halconazo or Corpus Friday.

Obviously u have no empathy..you have to be in there shoes to understand how great the film is...and beautiful shot...watch it again...its about the life of this family how everything is falling apart but are able to keep it together...and how the nanny is irreplaceable
@@ricomajestic IT's about the absolute beauty of the individual (the maid), it's about the intense class strife, near revolution levels, between the rich and poor in Mexico, but to see and understand all that, you have to see it all ! I was bored too halfway through then it all came together like a revelation, like the supreme cinematic artwork that it is, easily the best film of 2018, nothing really comes close to beating it. WATCH IT ALL

The first 45 minutes of Roma are just about the most boring thing I've ever seen. The rest of the film isn't good enough to warrant that level of boredom. I think it's a case of Emperor's new clothes.

It's one thing to experience an artsy-deep-poetry-like movie and another to watch an overrated over-hyped pretentious boring excuse of a film. Roma is the latter. No emotional punch whatsoever and even the black and white cinematography is too polished for the setting. This movie is a HUGE miss that only the vanguard cinema intellectualoid hipsters will put on a pedestal. All this exaggerated acclaim and ovation is not justifiable, it only tells me that critics and "experts" got carried away by cheap sentimentalism and the Cuarón name. What a letdown and a waste of time. Give me a break.

You come off as really bitter and angry at people for enjoying something, or maybe you're just seeking attention, conformation or confrontation. Yeah, so you disagree heavily with the critic consensus? I've done that plenty of times too. Know what I do? Move on with my life because I've got better things to do than to go out of my way to post in every comment section in an attempt to invalidate other people's opinions/feelings on a piece of cinema.
