  • The fan stopped working on our 2010 Kia Soul !. There was a puff of smoke and a burning smell while my wife was driving. In this video I go through replacing the blower motor resister to get the 1,2,3 fan speeds working again.
If your blower motor has intermittent problems, you'll want to replace the blower motor at the same time.
This fix will work for 2010-2013 Kia Souls.

I should've shown it first, but I show how the trim panels remove toward the end of the video. Thanks for watching!

This seems to be a common problem on this model and Kia's in general. Other than that I love our Kias.

How in the world did you get under there? I was trying to change the resistor out this morning, but found it impossible to get to it after taking out the side panel. Does it need to be on a rack for us big guys to be able to fit there?

I got in with my knees on the ground, and stomach on the floor in front of the seat. It is definitely a tight fit

How did you know it was the resistor & not the motor blower?

The blower motor worked fine on high. There was no hesitation to start blowing air, and there wasn't any noise or anything while it was running. My resistor burnt up and was smoking through the vents, and it didn't run when on 1, 2, or 3.
If you unplug the resistor, you should still be able to run your blower motor just fine on high, if not, the blower motor probably needs replaced.

Same here. Only after a few minutes

Sorry I didn't see your comment. The resistor only controls 1, 2, and 3 speeds of the blower motor. So if it doesn't work on 4 either, it could be a bad blower motor.

@@carguy_tmh turned out it was a relay that was only working some of the time
