The Dikler, my hero of the 70's! His jumping was second to none & had so many high placings in Gold Cup & Grand National having to lug around huge weights bless him! Happy memories! Xx

@@glynnevans1851 Wayward Lad broke the track record when he was beaten by Dawn Run in the Gold Cup and finished ahead of the previous years winner. He stayed and got up the hill but he just kept bumping into horses that stayed a tad better on the day.

What a fantastic field, The Dickler Pendle, Spanish Steps and Lescargot. I must say, The Dickler was one heck of a battler.

@@johnlivesey7892 Surely was John and a Fab N.Hunt racing era then .Think Pitman misjudged the final stage of the race and same the 73 National but we can debate this for the next 50 years and as the Queen Mother said that's racing. I always admired Fred Winter and his attention to detail and John Francome was Momentous for him. Also liked Fred Rimell another past Master the list could be endless.Kind regards Glynn n greetings from Stourbridge West Midlands UK 🕊🕊🕊

Worked for some great trainers, Derek Ancil, Nevell Crump, Jack Berry, and James Eustace.

But I miss the good old days, lots of memories.

@paulrichards6894 Yes the better jockey won it on the better horse.
Ron Barry rode a great race he'd only been on the Dikler once.
He jumped 3 fences at Saxon house thats all. Im sorry Richard Pitman couldn't ride a finish and the better jockey Ron Barry proved it.

In my opinion, yes. I think had Fred Winter let Francome take over as his top Jockey sooner, Pendil would have won in '73 &' 74.

Bobby Beasley, riding Captain Christy, deliberately rode upsides Pendil coming down to that fence. It was a legitimate racing tactic, and a gamble. Had High Ken stood up, I'm unsure whether Pendil would have still won, but you never know...

Pendil was hailed as the "new Arkle" by some at the time. A very good horse but comparisons with Arkle were ill advised. Pendil was a brilliant 3 miler but the Gold Cup distance tested his stamina, although he fell during one renewal. The Cheltenham hill has been the bane of many a good horse.
