Pig In A Pen

- I haven’t played in a full-tilt bluegrass ensemble in years - this was a real hoot. Pig In A Pen is a traditional song, first recorded in 1937 by Fiddlin' Arthur Smith in Charlotte, NC. Our arrangement, based on the Old & In The Way version, brings in two of my favorite collaborators: Gabe Terracciano, fiddle player extraordinaire, and William Carrigan, an extremely versatile acoustic and electric bassist. Both guys have recorded and gigged with us off and on for a few years, appearing in UA-cam videos, livestreams, on albums; pretty much anything that needs their magic touch. Of course, TOF-related work is just a small sliver of what these gentlemen do on the NYC music scene; I’ve left some links below to their websites if you’d like to see what else they’re up to.
The OG Old & In The Way album was recorded simply, so we did the same: one stereo mic to stand around, plus one mono spot mic on the bass…mixed in Pro Tools, then bounced to Josh's 1/4” Teac A-3300SX tape machine for some analog mastering magic.

This is the best cover of this song I’ve heard. Old & in the Way are the best, Jerry and Vasser are for sure tapping their feet to this
Yeah boys you got , two swigs of VA shine for you 🥳🇱🇷👣
Plaid. Plaid. Plaid. Pink Floyd. 🤣 Love it!
YEEeeee Hawwwww! I got a cramp in my leg from tapping my toe!
yeah baby... now i want a pig ;-)
Props to the bass line, as well. You’re not unnoticed, sir! Excellent stuff, fellas!
I was educated in music by an upright bass bigot. Always glad to see one. And hear.
i second that notion. I play a lot of bluegrass bass. Gotta keep everyone in line!!

You lads just don't do that near often enough for as good at it as you are.
“Young and in the Way”!
What a breath of fresh air!!
That’s some good pickin’ and fiddlin’ right there!
All I need is a pretty little girl and these four guys playin' around when I'm home.
My word, that fiddle is ABSURD!
The High Notes from everybody and everything soared out

Vassar and Jerry would be so proud! This wasn't a home run..........it was a grand slam!!
Whoo-eee, Boy, that was some mighty fine a-pickin and a-singin!
Are you sure you're not them boys what done knocked over the Piggly Wiggly's over in Yazoo?
Jed Clampett and Sheriff Taylor approve.
Glad someone shared Gabes last name..couldn’t spell it! Seen that fiddle player on here long ago
Great bluegrass piece with "happy" banjo work from Josh! Very glad to see Gabe Terracciano in the mix. An absolutely GREAT fiddler! Introduced to his work following Avalon Jazz Band. Can't get enough.
Me too. I love the Avalon Jazz Band. Can't imagine Tatiana joining in with this song though! 😆
@@richard_ager Ha! That's an image I won't get out of my head for a while!
Old and In the Way, one of the best and shortest lived bluegrass band ever. Perhaps the first super star bluegrass band (after Bill Monroe's, of course).
Jerry Garcia got his start on the jug band circuit, he was a damned good banjo player.
You guys did them justice.
Yup, they sure were great. Carson et. al. a skosh better-
Couldn’t stop my foot from tappin along 🐷
Oh my goodness, that was great. I believe the way I discovered Carson and Josh was when they teamed up with Reina del Cid for a version of "Dooley" way back when. This is "back to the roots" for you guys.
Takes me back to when I first heard the Old & In The Way album so many years ago....
This song makes you happy you smile as soon as you hear it, love singing along
Oh Yea! This Texas Boy loves it! Good to see and hear Gabe along with all of you! Brilliant fellows!

Way to play that mic! Old school! I love it!!
And you sing and play bluegrass music also! Wow! RESPECT. All the players are excellent. Been a grasser for more years than any of you have existed. Great sound. Great music. Please do some more.
wOw..
If Mark Knopfler should play some fiddle, I think he would do as Gabe Terracciano does! Nice tune, very nice tune Guys!
Bravo gentlemen!
Excellent cover of my favorite Old & In The Way song!
You boys blew that New York roof off with this authentic Bluegrass! Authentic, real energy and joyful. Rare and needed qualities for these times. Thank you.
Only thing missing here is a jug o' shine. 😛
Gabe Terracciano is a great link between two of my most favourite bands, yourselves and the Avalon Jazz Band!
I was thinking just the same thing ;)
Gabe TerraViana
Superb stuff, please tour scotland soon..
Play it boys!!! Yeeeeee!
Thanks to everybody in this video for just existing
Ha! NAILED it!!
Outstanding! 5 stars bluegrass singing and playing!
excellent
They sound an awful lot like the "Old & In The Way Band" which featured Jerry Garcia on banjo and vocals, Vassar Clements on fiddle, Peter Rowan on guitar and vocals, David Grisman on mandolin and vocals, and John Kahn on bass. Excellent stuff, guys, you really nailed it to the wall on that one!
Amazing, how much talent you guys have with the ability to perform very well in many styles of music! I especially enjoy your originals and hope you and Josh will get to collaborate on more new tunes. I really like when you find that blend of vocal, melody, and quality chord changes with tunes like “Coney Island”, “Angelina”, “When the Levy…”. Very enjoyable tunes!
More like this. Fantastic fiddling. The diversity of josh is amazing.
NAILED IT! The self titled album was the first LP I ever wore out. Thank you guys!
gREAT FOLKS. aND SO RELAXED PLAYING.

@@uyuyuy99 THE HELL I WILL
@@siggesaltens2663 8 months later and you still haven't turned off caps lock. I respect the dedication
Superb. I especially like the banjo pickin'....with some Garica-ish flourishes and a great mix of licks' and chonkin' for the backup. Just great.
Beautiful rendition. The violin and the banjo Wow!!!🕊🌻🤗
This is so epic - i aspire to learn the banjo and this gives me so much inspiration. Thanks lads!
Fun!🤗
Pure musical talent lives on! You guys have restored my faith in the younger generation. This is some of THE BEST picking and singing that I’ve ever heard. Thank you for sharing your talent.
Just what this country needs, more fun put back in the music! Thanks guys, you all sound great.
Stringbean and Grandpa would approve of this if they were still around.
A.MA.ZING. Perfect boys!!!! Love from the Netherlands!
I'm gonna start growin taters right now...!
Awesome! The fiddle player is amazing!
Fantastic. Your playing make me forget the long dark months aproaching. Greetings from Sweden.
Let's move to Texas. I'm sick of the darkness either
Absolutely incredible! Josh, I just watched your Ventura Highway vid. Now here you are picking the banjo with Carson! World class bluegrass right here boys and girls!
I love when these four get together
Amazing... made my day !!
These guys are so talented. They can sing solo, harmonize and play multiple instruments. Keep up the awesome work. You are bringing musical joy to so many!

24 carat bluegrass from three awesome guys in plaid shirts... and Josh in the obligatory Pink Floyd t-shirt... gotta love it!
Excellent...especially the banjo player...
Loving the flannel.
Just great bluegrass, hats off to this band. Loved the violin. Worth a million views if only people knew about it.
YAOOO ! 😘 from France to you all
Great fiddle playing. Fun piece of music.
I love when you guys do bluegrass. You're really good at it!
Please do a bluegrass album and tour!
You never cease to amaze. This not the kind of music I'm usually drawn to, but talent is talent and good is good. Well done, boys!
More! More!
A "blast from the past"! Jerry Garcia, David Grisman & friends are still with us. Carson, thanks for resurrecting this upbeat tune! What's next? The Doug Sahm Band? Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen?
That's some mighty fine pickin' and a grinin' boys!!
Excellent job gentlemen , love the fiddle work who is this young man , great stuff gents
That was fun.
You lads are such an inspiration for smaller channels like myself. Keep doing what you're doing Carson. The wolrd needs good music like this.
Hee Haw!!!!! Way to go fellers 🤠
Sheer joy!
Playing bluegrass in a Pink Floyd t-shirt. Reminds me of seeing Cody Jinks walk on stage wearing an Anthrax t-shirt lol. Great cover fellers!
SIERRA HOTEL !!!! Stunningly Awesome !!!!!!!
Y’all should do more old and in the way this is truly excellent
Man, that was a toe tapping pleasure to listen to boys, I tell y'all what.
My foot goes automatically.. I can't help it. It's always fun with these guys.
It's getting tighter boys!
Awesome. So refreshing. Love the double bass. But everyone doing a fine job. So great.

Impossible to stay still listening to this. So much great energy.
One of my favorite bluegrass songs. Excellent job guys
Excellent and powerful bluegrass sound, ace players!
Looks like Josh didn't get the wardrobe memo. Somehow Pink Floyd seems just a tad out of place. Josh, however, is never out of place!
Finger pigging good!
Doesn't get better than this!
Talking about musicians. Way to go Carson and Josh
Great video
Well executed. More please.
Bringing fun back to music! Well done!
