Just to help people out mine is a 07 with 200k miles on it and the noise is the Variable Value Timing. It is really common in Toyota. I worked at aisin automotive for 3 years and made those parts.
I thought so. The old mechanic’s screwdriver stethoscope never lies! My injectors are beautiful and quiet, 280,000kms from factory. Valves could do with some new shims to tighten it all up a bit but otherwise my 1gr is good as gold. Would be nice if it ran a little cooler though.
Unless the Timing Chain Tensioner Has Gone South,Is NOT A Common Issue ,But For Some Strange Reason,Even After the Problems TOYOTA Had W/ 4 Cyl.Tensioner,Seems That Eng. May Have a Plastic Tensioner ,Also. The 4 Cyl.Was Plastic Tensioner,NOT SURE IF The 4.0 Is .
I had a TICK as loud as yours with my tacoma, i was taking it for oil changes at a "Chain Store" oil place, paying over 60 dollars a oil change. Then this summer of 2014 took it to a local service center run by local people, I had them change the oil with 5W-30 semi-synthetic oil, at a lower price. When I started the truck the Ticking was reduced by I'll say 90% some days i can not even hear it. All i can say is I am very pleased. I hope this may help you .
I have the 2011 and they sound identical. It is all by design. The valve train is different than other Toyota's being it uses no rockers, quad cam, and a timing chain (not a timing belt) all of those components add to the valvtrain noise. Just stay on top of those oil changes and it will keep running.
Mine has a tick that comes and goes. I have 140,000 miles and it has done it for a long time. I am over it, I don't worry about it, runs like a champion.
My 2021 2.7L (bought it with 9 miles on ODO) make the same noise just not as loud, thought something was wrong with it when I opened the hood. Now it's over 1000 miles and love every minute driving it.
I have a 2006 TRD Sport Tacoma 4.0 with 175K miles and it has always had a slight tick but nothing this extreme. Only thing I've had to replace was the crank position sensor. Still runs great.
Just watched entire video- take my word for it, there is NOTHING wrong with this engine. Valve noise is normal for these engines. Yours sounds IDENTICAL to my dad's 2008 Tacoma 1GR-FE with 95K+ miles and mechanically ours has given us ZERO PROBLEMS. Our 1GR-FE has been a fantastic engine to us; it's been super reliable and it sounds great past 3K RPM. The clicking sound is just valves opening and closing and fuel injectors operating. Also I've heard as these engines get older they may start to make a little more valve noise due to the VVT system, but you shouldn't be worried at all. This engine has a VERY long ways to go until it's "defective". Just be sure to change the oil regularly.
I just have that old Toyota engine sounds this morning. 2005 only have 144000 miles never tuned up but just changing oil and add water. Been running fine. Until the noise. Thanks for the video.
The ticking noise is caused by the direct fuel injection, the similar type of fuel injectors that are used in Diesel engines. That’s why it sounds similar to a Diesel engine.
It does sound like a diesel engine! But why do some Tacoma‘s have a smoother sound and others have a louder ticking sound? I was just about to buy a 2015 Tacoma and I had to walk away because I noticed this ticking, almost diesel engine type sound and I thought there was something wrong with the engine.
@@anthonygiordano3991 I believe 2016 was when the 2GR-FS V6 engine was starting to be used in the 3rd Generation Tacoma. The previous Generation had a completely different engine before 2016. Also some Tacomas have four cylinder engines which sound completely different. There’s a UA-cam channel called The Car Care Nut, he has a good video explaining this in detail.
@@jodycochran6222 - Thanks for the feedback. I really appreciate it and I’ll check out that channel! It was a 4.0 V6 engine. The dealer got upset with me because he said that’s normal for Tacoma‘s and I even had the truck inspected at the Toyota dealership.. they said no problems found but I don’t know how far I can trust them to do a thorough job.
I know this is an old thread, but just my input 2002 Toyota Tacoma, 245k miles, happened when I changed my own oil about 2 years ago. Just recently brought it in the shop to take a look. Everything looked good from the inside after taking off the valve cover. One of my coworkers say it's actually a sticking push rod that makes that noise, but again, normal noise for Toyota engines. Bulletproof but loud af lol
for one your running the wrong motor oil for the climate second if you live in a cold region try a block heater by now you will need a valve adjustment
i have a 04 runner and head gasket blown at 165k..not because it was over heat but becasue Toyota manufacture fucked up on their head gasket. they've since fixed that issue with mid to upper 2005 models.
I have used DURALUBE in my toyotas at every oil change for 20+ yr. It has saved my engine 3 times when lube places have messed up and forgotten to refill oil.
My 4.0L 1GR-FE does the same ticking noise, it’s normal, most likely just injectors, and it is typically louder on the drivers side on mine as well. I wouldn’t be too concerned about it
4runners with the 4L seem to have the same noise including mine. I wouldn't say Toyota engines all have it as my t100 with 3.4 was so quiet you had to feel the hood to know it was running and that was for 160k miles. The v8 don't seem to suffer either as I've owned the tundra and 4runner v8 with no noise.
I found that full systemic oils seem much louder than conventional oil try changing to conventional and see if it quotes down. As long as it doesn’t void your warranty.
Check the bushing behind the torque converter seal. It requires a transmission remove and install but my 07 tacoma had a worn out copper bushing which the torque converter spins inside. Mine was so worn out it was spinning with the converter scarring the front oil pump cover
My 1990 4Runner has been doing the same thing, I started adding fuel injector cleaner into the gas tank and the ticking quit during idle after a couple of tank fulls of fuel and after the engine warms up and I try to go over 40 miles per hour the engine started ticking again, so yesterday I added octane booster from gum out and took the 4Runner out on the interstate and up to 70 mph and the ticking was gone. I read in the owners manual you should use 89.9% octane and I've been using 87.9 octane and I think this may be the problem but I'm not signing off on this yet as I need more time to see if the things will work continuously. If this works, I guess I'm going to either have to run medium octane fuel or premium. It might be cheaper to buy the gum out octane booster for three dollars a bottle at Walmart.
It’s the ubiquitous 1GRFE VSV valve tick against the block noise... Search for it on the old “tubes of you” and add a couple hi temp rubber washers to help dampen the noise.
I have a '13 tacoma V-6 it generated this noise when cold especially when accelerating. I took it to several toyota dealerships that told me it was normal. Then i went to Toyota of Ft Walton Beach, FL and they had a TB fix via I think the computer. Anyway, they fixed it and it has never returned.
I've got a 2013 Tacoma 4.0l with 100K. Possibly (sounds like) the same issue. I'm a previously ASE certified master technician. I've been an auto tech for almost 40 years. I've specialized in Toyota's in the latter part of my career. Done a bit of research, haven't found any TSBs, haven't found much of anything online about this issue other than your video. Mine sounds louder when cold and in my experience sounds like piston slap, which makes sense considering it goes away, for the most part, when fully warmed up. I bought it with 90K on it and the noise has always been there. Doesn't seem to have gotten any louder. At this point I'm thinking it's normal for these engines. There are a few engines out there that exhibit the same noise and it is a normal condition. My thoughts are that if it were a serious problem we would find much more on the internet about it. I'm just going to keep doing oil changes every 6 months (time is very important too) or at 5k miles with good quality oil. Hope this helps and would like an update if you still follow this thread.
Thank you for the information. My tick does not go away as the engine warms up. It is there all the time and is coming from cylinder #6 just like in the video. With my vehicle it sure sounds like lifter noise to me. If I had to guess I would say my lash needs adjustment.
Oye amigo, buen día, me podrás dar información porque al apagar el motor de tacoma 4.0 se oye un sonido de subido y chasquido al mismo tiempo en el filtro del aire? Algo asi
its a pwm purge vlave noise, its supposed to do that. part of your egr system. does it when its at full op temp. there are things in the forms about it.
Every 2nd gen Tacoma has that tapping sound. I thought the same thing when I bought my 2007. I switched out to Mobil 1 full synthetic along with the Mobil 1 filter and the tapping is almost nonexistent. A very small problem to endure for such a strong, reliable truck. Almost 100K mi on mine and I've never had one single engine problem at all. Only scheduled maintenance and normal wear parts have been replaced. If I didn't love my Tacoma so much, I'd buy a newer one, but you know the saying, the best truck is a paid off truck! Sorry you lost your Tacoma in the wreck, also I hope you didn't lose faith in Tacomas because of the noise.
We can put you in a rental if you need. Technician is advising that you don't drive the vehicle. It will only make it worse. Its possibly cracked/ knocking into the brake shaft. After inspecting your vehicle, Arlington Toyota recommends additional services be completed. To review the inspection and
Sorry about the typo's below i typed that too quick without checking. The loud ticking on the right bank happened all of a sudden after start-up. Prior to that the engine has been faultless and quiet with no loud ticking at all with 165,000kms on the clock (= about 100,000 miles)
yep.Same as mine ,the same exact rattle around 2.2 on the power band .Then goes away.Annoying. Same ' normal 'story from Toyota. Codes, pressures all good.Started at 200,000 km. Had all second opinions, just like you. They said if it really bothered me to have the engine replaced.I took them at their word actually and traded it for a new Subaru. Thanks for the vid.
The Ticking Noise is normal , Description of Wikimotors : All the 1GRs have ticking noise. That is absolutely normal as it signifies about gasoline steam ventilation system functioning. The noise accompanies injectors operation.
My 2013 is at the stealership today, it has 58,685 miles and mine makes the same noise and worse if you listen underneath by the bottom of the engine. They told me first normal and they couldn't replicate the noise, so I said all you have to do is start it!! So I pulled out video, they said normal when cold and warm is quiet, so I showed them video of it at operating temp with with same noise, they said normal. So then I said, I sold cars for 16 years and I know dealership narratives, and there mouths fell open, so there not gonna fix anything until it goes out of warranty because it would cost Toyota gazillions to fix the faulty designs. But I told them today,,,,,, it's why I don't work at dealerships any more,,,,,, plain and simple.
Letting a motor idle isn’t really good. The oil gets hot. Did you try 5w30 ? Sounds like injectors also definitely a noisy motor though. What happened with it?
btw its on the drivers side. the little gray plug attached to the line with a fuel filter looking thing on it and then goes in to the intake from there.
I hear same ticking in my truck and im concern about it, going to have dealer check it, still have extended warranty, mine louder, valves maybe,, noise gose away when engine starts warming up
I had a 2013 Tacoma with what Toyota calls a SPARK KNOCK. Actually it is an engine knock from about 1200 RPM to 1500 RPM and it took Toyota a year to come up with a fix TSB 4414. Then another 6 months fighting with the dealer to actually do it. It was a reflash of the ECM. It fixed the knocking but with 25k on the engine constantly knocking I wasn't comfortable in keeping it. After arbitration and trying to work with several dealership and Toyota finally admitted they had and issue with the TSB. I was pretty much over Toyota. So I went shopping but after looking and test driving the Colorado and the Frontier and riding in friend's 2015 Tacoma's. I purchased a 2015 Toyota. After two weeks it started making a chatter loud enough to be heard over the tire noise on acceleration and only when it is warm out side same as the engine knock. I'm trying to figure out if is a cylinder or valve noise. I think it is related ECM again the 2013 was the same thing. I don't hear it driving to work in the morning around 05:30 am.... I've had the truck for month... I've already talk to Kenny Tran at Cabe Toyota Service Department and he is not blowing me off like the other dealerships but will see what happens. Toyota quality is totally lacking. I have a laundry list of things that need to be looked at from the paints finish on one of the doors to hinge on one of the back seat that folds up. Really for 30k....
no vehicle will ever satisfy you. I suggest getting a good horse. Oh... your horse might make a strange noise which you will worry about for no reason. When that happens, try not the over think it.
I had a brand new 1992 Toyota pickup with a 4cyl that made a Knocking sound on very cold mornings only . they told me it was the way the engine was designed that the piston skirts were under size when cold to allow oil to get between them. and at operating temp it goes away. and it did . my son still has that truck and is still running great. my 2005 Tacoma has a 4cyl and makes a small knock sound when cold out but goes away in a minute or two of driving
Man - to me and everyone I know that's familiar with Toyota trucks - that's a standard Yota motor sound.! They all seem to have that tick....But they're awesome vehicles and engines - they keep right on "Ticking" (Like a Timex) Ha....Ha I'm sure you've found your answer/fix by now... it's a year later? .... But if the ticking sound was louder after it warmed up - it could be a Donut gasket (Exhaust flange) leak, in addition to the normal Toyota tick. Donut gasket leaks can also make a ticking sound. My 2001 Tacoma Prerunner 2.7L (with 265,000 miles, no major problems or repairs to date).... it has that Same "Toyota ticking/knocking" sound - especially at cold start. My guess is.... their ticking motor is caused from an oil pump design that's slow to pick up and distribute, just IMO. But If so, a synthetic motor oil should help reduce the sound....and using a "Lucas Oil" type additive could help reduce or eliminate that altogether. It's designed precisely for that lack of oil throughout the engine at cold start. Mine is due for oil change....I might just go synthetic or with an additive. It would be Nice to Not hear that ticking....
I just bought a 2015 and noticed the noise tonight. I'm usually in the truck when I start it and don't hear anything. I fired it up tonight from outside the truck and it sounded like there was an exhaust leak. That noise went away after e few seconds and then I noticed the ticking. It's not near as loud as the truck in this video but to loud for a truck with only 3000KM! this thing hasn't even had its first oil change. It's about -16 out tonight and I only ran it for about 2 minutes so I'm going to check tomorrow when the trucks warm to see if its still there. It went away when I gave it a little rev up to about 2000rpm, I didn't want to go any higher because the motor was still cold, and came back again when it returned to idle.
My 2004 Prado 1GR-FE 4litre petrol V6 just developed a load ticking noise today (all of a sudden) the same as yours on the right bank as if all of a sudden one cam follower/bucket went out of spec. Now i have a very audible loud ticking that sounds terrible. Prior to today the engine was very quiet. It has a oil change about 3 mths ago and only top quality full synthetic of correct spec. The engine had been running dead smooth and plenty of power/torque under any load conditions. I just can't understand how all of a sudden the load ticking just happened on start up. Prior to this i did disconnect the battery to access a spotlight relay tucked down opposite the side of the battery which had to be removed to gain access. Surely disconnecting and reconnecting a battery could not cause this problem?? I work on cars as a hobby and own 3 x V8 W128 late 80's Mercs and never have any problem with those engines that are getting close to 30yrs old that have the same set up with overhead cams and followers and compensators and buckets with different thicknesses to shim into spec. But they never go out of spec. What is just experienced today with the 1GR-FE V6 is just insane to have this happen on a start-up ( i was driving the Prado earlier in the day and it was fine)?? I cleaned the airflow meter and tried pulling each injector wire one by one and it caused the engine idle to drop and run rough as expected until the plug was re-connected so all cylinders are firing adnits running iridium plugs that were checked at last oil change by me. Any input much appreciated.
Hi, sounds like as you said lifter or valve lash (gap) issue. One thing you could try is use a lighter weight oil. In cold weather the oil would be like malasses. So the engine has to work harder to push the oil around, untill it warms up.
Your are right about the loud noise coming from your engine. I have the identical engine on my 4runner limited w/75500 miles, and it is so much quieter and smoother. I would have someone check your valve clearance. Good Luck.
I have a 2014 with the same sound coming from the driver's side and happens when warm and cold, 93 octane, fresh factory oil, injectors cleaned, new factory plugs, still a knock, all the time. Not the injector tick which is normal, its a deeper knock from drivers side only. Is worse if RPM is between 1k-1500. I can hear it in the cab coming from the engine compartment on drivers side bank. A rod bearing type knock but its not the rod bearings. Getting a rattle upon letting off the gas pedal too. Any answers for your truck?
SgtSABE Fortunately, truck was rear ended and was a total loss. I never got to see the effects of this so called, "within threshold noise" I had a v6 Toyota Avalon with 250k+ miles that didn't sound this bad. To me it sounded like bad lifter or valve clearance was not in spec. Again Toyota said, "there was nothing wrong"
The 'Toyota Tick' strikes again. It's a top end noise from your valve train which is awaiting lubrication. As the motor warms & the oil is more viscous, the sound deadens or even goes away altogether. I've got 115,000 on my '13 & it rattles no more or no less than when it was new. A friend suggested switching to synthetic motor oil to quiet it down & to my surprise it did. That's all I run in it now.
@@TacoJordann - try the synthetic oil first! It’s a little more expensive but well worth it. I’d be a little hesitant to go against Toyota’s recommendation for oil weights…
Replaced my head gasket, new water pump, new hoses, Denso starter, new battery, oil pan gasket changed and flaking paint inside oil pan removed, Cleaned entire intake manifold, new gaskets, new tensioner.. Now mine has that annoying tic that was not there before.. If it's an interference motor, you could have valves smacking pistons.. If the chain gets too far off in timing, major problem. I've reset my timing twice but fear I may have a stretched chain.. 2002 Tacoma 3rzfe 190,000 miles on her.. Oh yeah and new brakes all the way around put on last year.. Replaced headlights, new front bumper plastic as well. But the tic concerns me.. Sounds like a time bomb.. I DO NOT want new truck payments! Paid for is the way to go. I may be doing a whole timing chain job... ugh :(
My 2007 fj cruiser ( 198000 k)has that noise as well, got it check and they said its a tensioner issue, the noise started in my truck after drive belt change, its louder when accelerating.
I bought a brand new T100 back in the day and at 22k my throwout bearing went out. They fixed it for free, still under warranty too. Woulda cost me 1200. I miss that truck...
This is weird but I bought a 2010 TRD 4door in August and never heard the tick until a quick trip to Starbucks over xmas and maybe a week before this I had to hit the gas hard to get in a fast lane. Like another guy said below, maybe with a little torque on the motor it starts ticking because it damages the cam, shafts, Pistons I don't f ing know I'm not a mechanic but I sure as hell never heard this ticking in the first 4 months since I started driving it until I accelerated once. This could have done something to the oil pump maybe? I'm just offering a cause and effect idea? Maybe it's bad gas because dumped a couple 5 gallon cans into it recently left over from lawnmower summer stock, maybe because so many people have a tick it's just a flaw in the design that comes out after a certain amount of times after you put stress on this motor from kicking it down a gear or two.
Brother you have to remove the vsv valve bolt and install 3/16 By 1/2 By 1/16 rubber washer and wrap Téflon in bêtween . Thé teflon will sit in thé Eye of your vsv when you bolt it in. First you un bolt the vsv then put the washer then wrap Téflon five rounds then insert into thé vsv then washer and bolt it in. Be careful not to over tighten thé bolt.
I've got a 06 Tacoma with the off road package manual 6 speed. it's got 130k miles on it I've had the flywheel resurfaced, New clutch disc, throw out bearing and clutch cover. after the chirping from the old t.o. bearing was gone I started noticing how rough my engine sounded. I'm thinking it's my timing chain but I don't know. I'm worried about it. yours sounds similar to mine that loud clicking noise. is it lifters? my dad's got an 07 automatic bade model with 68k and his sounds similar to mine but not as bad. Have you figured anything out yet??
Same noise on my dad's '12 Tacoma PreRunner when cold. I believe it has something to do with the valve lash adjusters. As they pump up it quietens down a little bit.
I have 2012 Trd Sport 57K miles have the same noice someone told me it can be exhaust leak. from the side of the engine. I also noticed when Im going up hill not pushing a lot of gas the noise comes even louder. Still have to check and get more opinions
Per Tacoma World Forum... Noise is being caused by bad oil pumps! A lot of guys had noise issues on 2013-early 2014 models. So far my 2014 built on 4/14 doesn't have the problem ....
My Tacoma 2010 over 200,000 miles engine super quiet then that I thought about trading in for a Tundra and that V-8 5.7 had a noise similar the one you have and I tell you deal was off immediately
I put marvel mystery oil in oil and gas in my 06 Tacoma, 135,000mls on truck. Put in every fill up. 20% in oil. Will quiet it down. Ofcourse check warranty issues with new vehicles. Some warranties void if do it.
Like I said in an earlier comments, I was fortunate to have been rear ended. Vehicle was total loss. I did not have to deal with any resulting problems that might have arisen from "noise within normal tolerances". All I can recommend is keep taking it back and have on record your visits in case it goes bad after warranty expires.
@CHAOS11 The fact is Toyota revolutionized the off road retail truck sector with the whole Prerunner edition. If you don't know the history, this version was adapted from the actual test vehicles used by Toyota to "pre run" an off road course without using their race vehicle. So the Prerunner needed to be rugged enough to make the run. Upgraded suspension, wheels and tires were pretty much all that was changed. So from that we have the wicked trucks you see today with the TRD OFF ROAD SR5 V6 PRERUNNER tag. The strongest, most reliable mid size import truck on the market. Every make has its strong supporters like you and myself, but I gotta say if you took a stock Tacoma against a stock Frontier, the Tacoma would win hands down, 9/10 times. Peace brother and keep truckin.
I have a 2012 Tacoma Pre Runner with 45,000 on it and have the same noise and it's been getting louder ! My friend even asked what's wrong with your truck. all my maintenance has been done by Toyota. I have complained several times to be told "it's normal " . I had a 1996 Toyota T100 that had 300,000 on it and never sounded like this
Peter R I just got a ‘12 Taco with 60k on the clock, sounds similar to this maybe a little less noticeable. I was concerned when I first noticed it, after doing a little bit of research this seems to be the norm. I find it hard to believe but everyone says the same thing. Lol
I got a 07 Toyota Tacoma 2WD(RWD) PreRunner SR5 4.0L; it sounds a lot louder. like an angry, roaring lion ready to devour vs your truck. And that doesn't sound loud to me. Verdict: normal sound.
I HAVE THE SAME ISSuE, RIGHT NOW, i have a doublecab 2009 prerunner with 71k i bought it from CARMAX, with 67k i hear the ticking, i have a warranty debating to go in and fight for it , i financed this truck, but if this isnt normal ill bring some wrath what was the outcome as of now? my friend has a newer one and says hers doesnt tick? i have a video mine ticking hit me asap
I call bullshit too, I just had my Head Gasket replaced and now my engine sounds like a chatter box. Diesel like chatter. I was told a spin bearing not letting the oil up to the top end. Going to check oil pressure. I was just at a buddies with a 4 runner with same engine and it’s way quiet. Just like mine was before they broke it open. Been setting off the knock sensor at 50mph and using fuel. Going back to the damn shop.
My 2008 Tacoma with 4L 1GR-FE has the same noise. It started very quietly only at idle around 60k miles. Would go away when I changed the oil every 5k miles. Now at 150k miles it ticks constantly and is much louder. Independent mechanic couldn't diagnose and Toyota wants $5k to take off the heads and "investigate" 🤦🏼♂️ Piston slap, valve adjustment, rod bearing going... Who knows?!? It runs great, but sounds like it's going to tear itself apart eventually 🤣 I really want to know what it is so I can fix it 😓
@CHAOS11 I know you're loyal to your brand just as I am to mine. I owned a 2001 Frontier off road and with less that 30K mi the transmission started slipping in 1st and 2nd gear. Dealer said it was my fault, but never took it off road at that point, just daily driving. A month later the tranny locked up and I had to rebuild it. My opinion, the older Frontiers were really clunky and sluggish as far as power and frankly didn't look as nice as the Tacomas 1st gen or 2nd gen. I traded UP to a 2004 Tacoma TRD off road. Drove it till 2007 when I traded up to a 2nd gen TRD off road. Still driving it today with 98K mi on it. Never one single problem. I've had both of them in ravines, up and down trails in mud, through creek beds and even launched the one I have now over a gully (about 9' across) without even a single rattle. FYI it's still siting on the stock suspension, wheels and tires. Only upgrade was a K&N air filter.
I have a 2013 Tacoma and took it to my dealer for exactly the same thing. I was also told they did not hear anything abnormal. I plan to write a letter to Toyota about the lack of service at the dealership and then find a dealer that will actually help. This sounds like a dry lifter, to me.
My 2018 4runner has the exact same problem. Search Flirdude 2018 Toyota 4Runner with 4.0L engine type 1GR-FE - COLD Start engine tick. Only 16,000 miles. It is a design defect in my opinion.
I only had the truck til about 56k. Fortunately I was rear ended and didn't have to find out exactly what that tick was. Being a Toyota maybe I wouldn't have seen dproblems til 80k-125k miles.
Nicholas Shaver It's normal I worked on a truck that has over 400.000 km on it and it sounds the same. v6 and v8 engines shake no matter how new. I think people should buy electric cars if they think the fuel injection noise is a problem or maybe put some magnaflow so you won't hear the engine purring lol
I have a 08 Tacoma and it's not nearly that loud. It still has the ticking noise and the diesel sound but again it's not as loud. Toyota will deny it all day. I have bad piston slap on my truck and they told me it's normal. The good news is, this motor is tough. It's a loud engine and we have to put up with it. Try putting 97 octane in it for two fill ups and see if that makes a difference. Also try synthetic oil if you already don't have it in the engine. And try going to Toyotaworld.com it's a great place for tacoma owners.
Just to help people out mine is a 07 with 200k miles on it and the noise is the Variable Value Timing. It is really common in Toyota. I worked at aisin automotive for 3 years and made those parts.
Variable Valve Timing...just to be precise.
"These engines are known for being quiet" ?? There known for ticking dude!
Your engine is fine dude, my Tacoma has 200k on it and still sounds the same. Those 4.0l's are noisy but reliable
I believe John G! "He knows da way me Yota bruddas"!
Have an '18 4RNR.... 4.0L.... 40K miles. Ticky-valvetrain, but get oil changes every 5K religiously.... so, I dunno?
That's just the "Toyota Tick" brother. Every toyota since the 70s has done it. 500,000+km ticking and going strong with the two I've got...
And at 500,000 it will sound the same..normal
I have the 2011 and they sound identical. It is all by design. The valve train is different than other Toyota's being it uses no rockers, quad cam, and a timing chain (not a timing belt) all of those components add to the valvtrain noise. Just stay on top of those oil changes and it will keep running.
Mine has a tick that comes and goes. I have 140,000 miles and it has done it for a long time.
I am over it, I don't worry about it, runs like a champion.
I just noticed it comes and goes
Valve lash is off ?
My 2021 2.7L (bought it with 9 miles on ODO) make the same noise just not as loud, thought something was wrong with it when I opened the hood. Now it's over 1000 miles and love every minute driving it.
I have a 2019 4Runner with only 130 miles. Sounds noisy as hell but I know it's normal. Looking forward to that 300,000 mile mark!
I have a 2018 Tacoma with 27,000 miles and it also makes noise
do you still have it ? i have noise ! 2013
@@spotless624 my 4th gen with 135k miles sounds even worse lol it’s normal
That is called the "taco tick" toyota's have always had a loud valve train.
Bingo...even 4 or 6 inline the same story...I like Toyo🤣
Bruh
I have a 2006 TRD Sport Tacoma 4.0 with 175K miles and it has always had a slight tick but nothing this extreme. Only thing I've had to replace was the crank position sensor. Still runs great.
There is a valve on the fuel system that makes noise. " Fuel pressure pulsation damper" located on the drivers side of engine.

Just be sure to change the oil regularly.
you promise? I just get scared by the noise but im new to my 06 tacoma.
I just have that old Toyota engine sounds this morning. 2005 only have 144000 miles never tuned up but just changing oil and add water. Been running fine. Until the noise. Thanks for the video.
Yeah, no with ours it happened very low miles.
The ticking noise is caused by the direct fuel injection, the similar type of fuel injectors that are used in Diesel engines. That’s why it sounds similar to a Diesel engine.
Oh thank god, i was so concerned that I had a knock or something, but this engine sounds nearly identical to my 4.0 in my 2nd gen taco
Thank you!
I know this is an old thread, but just my input
2002 Toyota Tacoma, 245k miles, happened when I changed my own oil about 2 years ago. Just recently brought it in the shop to take a look. Everything looked good from the inside after taking off the valve cover. One of my coworkers say it's actually a sticking push rod that makes that noise, but again, normal noise for Toyota engines. Bulletproof but loud af lol
spiro37 no pushrods in those engines. Your friend is not someone to listen to.
i have a 2010 tacoma with approximately 37,000 miles on it. I got it brand new, 12 miles on it, and motor sounds the same eversince i bought it.
for one your running the wrong motor oil for the climate second if you live in a cold region try a block heater by now you will need a valve adjustment
my 2012 1GR-FE has the exact same noise and it is completely healthy according to mechanics.
The 4.0 is just naturally loud it's a fantastic engine and I don't think there have really been any reported "defective" 4.0 V6 in the Tacoma
i have a 04 runner and head gasket blown at 165k..not because it was over heat but becasue Toyota manufacture fucked up on their head gasket. they've since fixed that issue with mid to upper 2005 models.
I have a 4 V6 and it is such a good engine but has a noise - this sounds like mine
I have used DURALUBE in my toyotas at every oil change for 20+ yr. It has saved my engine 3 times when lube places have messed up and forgotten to refill oil.
I tell everyone I did a diesel swap
Touché
My 4.0L 1GR-FE does the same ticking noise, it’s normal, most likely just injectors, and it is typically louder on the drivers side on mine as well. I wouldn’t be too concerned about it
4runners with the 4L seem to have the same noise including mine. I wouldn't say Toyota engines all have it as my t100 with 3.4 was so quiet you had to feel the hood to know it was running and that was for 160k miles. The v8 don't seem to suffer either as I've owned the tundra and 4runner v8 with no noise.
Haaaaaaa I thought there was something wrong with my truck , cuz it sound like a diesel truck 😂😂😂
I found that full systemic oils seem much louder than conventional oil try changing to conventional and see if it quotes down. As long as it doesn’t void your warranty.
It was a bad motor. Car was rear ended and deemed total loss. I am sure I would have had problems.
Just a normal 4.0 ticking away. If you think this is loud, listen to a 22R lol they sound like diesels idling.
My '86 22RTE didn't have that noise. 22R and RE were known for timing guide noise when worn.
Algo asi
Like everyone else has stated. Your truck is fine. Mine has always sounded exactly the same even with very low miles.
its a pwm purge vlave noise, its supposed to do that. part of your egr system. does it when its at full op temp. there are things in the forms about it.
cory820 very true.
got the same sound on my 2017 Tacoma SR5.
Same here!!! I WAS WONDERING ABOUT THAT NOISE BUT IT SEEMS NORMAL.
fuel injectors self cleaning system. or something like that, from what i remember.
Honestly it sounds about the same as the rest of them, including my 08 4runner.
I run the same oil as well. when ac kicks on I hear a little more of the tick. but with ac off I don't hear it.
We can put you in a rental if you need. Technician is advising that you don't drive the vehicle. It will only make it worse. Its possibly cracked/ knocking into the brake shaft.
After inspecting your vehicle, Arlington Toyota recommends additional services be completed.
To review the inspection and
engine sounds good! the noise you hear is the valvetrain and injectors
What is the small black inline filter at 0:37 on the video ?
Thank You! mine does the same noise and I though it was something wrong. 2010
Man - to me and everyone I know that's familiar with Toyota trucks - that's a standard Yota motor sound.! They all seem to have that tick....But they're awesome vehicles and engines - they keep right on "Ticking" (Like a Timex) Ha....Ha
I'm sure you've found your answer/fix by now... it's a year later?
I never got to see the effects of this so called, "within threshold noise"
I had a v6 Toyota Avalon with 250k+ miles that didn't sound this bad.
To me it sounded like bad lifter or valve clearance was not in spec. Again Toyota said, "there was nothing wrong"
Hey that's normal you have a great truck i have one too!
Would you recommend running a heavier oil? Such as 10w30? I was told to run it because it will quite it down. Or should I stick with 5w20?
@@TacoJordann - try the synthetic oil first! It’s a little more expensive but well worth it. I’d be a little hesitant to go against Toyota’s recommendation for oil weights…
make sure your using top tear gas like shell it worked for me
charles barker exactly
I may be doing a whole timing chain job... ugh :(
You just overkilled your engine with repairs...🤣🤣 that's why ticking now. You should have left it as it was.
Hello friend, i have a similar noise but in my Toyota Tundra 2010. It is not concerning?. For the commentaries, say that this noise is normal!
My 2007 fj cruiser ( 198000 k)has that noise as well, got it check and they said its a tensioner issue, the noise started in my truck after drive belt change, its louder when accelerating.
If you have a manual wait till you hear the throwout bearing squeak!
107,000 miles when the tick just started this Christmas 2015
Cam phaser. It goes away slightly with a little extra oil in the engine
My engine sound exactly the same. I have 2013 Toyota Tacoma pre runner V6 4L
My Tacoma 2010 over 200,000 miles engine super quiet then that
I thought about trading in for a Tundra and that V-8 5.7 had a noise similar the one you have and I tell you deal was off immediately
I put marvel mystery oil in oil and gas in my 06 Tacoma, 135,000mls on truck. Put in every fill up. 20% in oil. Will quiet it down. Ofcourse check warranty issues with new vehicles. Some warranties void if do it.
What did you find out about the truck? What was the end result? Mine does it too!
Peace brother and keep truckin.
gimmick name. It has the same susp. as a 4WD Taco, nothing a race team would drive. It's just a street truck that sits higher.
Mine sounded like than when I had 25k, but improved over time , now 203k, Runs great
I have a 2012 Tacoma Pre Runner with 45,000 on it and have the same noise and it's been getting louder ! My friend even asked what's wrong with your truck. all my maintenance has been done by Toyota. I have complained several times to be told "it's normal " . I had a 1996 Toyota T100 that had 300,000 on it and never sounded like this
Sounds like mine either injectors or valve nothing abnormal . I found it doesn’t make that noise if you use higher grade fuel ⛽️
it mostly sounds like air is coming out. was it the exhaust manifold because thats what im pointing my finger at
Have you compared it to another vehicle with same engine? Sure seems normal to me.
Peter R I just got a ‘12 Taco with 60k on the clock, sounds similar to this maybe a little less noticeable. I was concerned when I first noticed it, after doing a little bit of research this seems to be the norm. I find it hard to believe but everyone says the same thing. Lol
I think mines louder lol
Pink fan mount? What’s that about mines pink too
I got a 07 Toyota Tacoma 2WD(RWD) PreRunner SR5 4.0L; it sounds a lot louder. like an angry, roaring lion ready to devour vs your truck. And that doesn't sound loud to me. Verdict: normal sound.
I HAVE THE SAME ISSuE, RIGHT NOW, i have a doublecab 2009 prerunner with 71k
i bought it from CARMAX, with 67k i hear the ticking, i have a warranty debating to go in and fight for it , i financed this truck, but if this isnt normal ill bring some wrath
what was the outcome as of now?
my friend has a newer one and says hers doesnt tick?
i have a video mine ticking hit me asap
Thar helps get rid of,or quiet down that tick for my 2016 tacoma pro
It runs great, but sounds like it's going to tear itself apart eventually 🤣 I really want to know what it is so I can fix it 😓
could be the anti backlash cam gears.
Charlie Lonidier it doesn't have lifters.
My 2018 4runner has the exact same problem. Search Flirdude 2018 Toyota 4Runner with 4.0L engine type 1GR-FE - COLD Start engine tick. Only 16,000 miles. It is a design defect in my opinion.
They use this same engine in several models. So are other models doing this or just the Tacoma?
I have a 2007 Toyota 4runner 2wd 4.0 v6 and it does that sound sometimes
Alexander Turner exactly how much can a tacoma image?
Oil pressure? No oil to the top end???
Can you give another update? Just bought a 07 4.0 and noticed a tick that is intermittent
I only had the truck til about 56k. Fortunately I was rear ended and didn't have to find out exactly what that tick was.
Being a Toyota maybe I wouldn't have seen dproblems til 80k-125k miles.
Fortunately i was rear ended haha. My neighbors 06 with 20k miles and my 07 with 160k have the same tick
My 2010 sounds the same and Toyota says its within normal specs. I think I'm going to get a 2nd opinion.
Put rubber washers in between the evap valve and the block.
Yeah this sounds like my truck totally fine
I have a 08 Tacoma and it's not nearly that loud. It still has the ticking noise and the diesel sound but again it's not as loud. Toyota will deny it all day. I have bad piston slap on my truck and they told me it's normal. The good news is, this motor is tough. It's a loud engine and we have to put up with it. Try putting 97 octane in it for two fill ups and see if that makes a difference. Also try synthetic oil if you already don't have it in the engine. And try going to Toyotaworld.com it's a great place for tacoma owners.
What year is this truck?
