You can have someone who worked for so long around 10 years and he looked phenomenal, and then you have someone who worked in a short period of time(like 5 years) to get 3/4 of what the guy who did 10 years got,but that doesn't make the guy that got it in shorter time the winner. Of course,if the guy worked as long as the first guy,he could be better,but he didnt.

Sonbaty is my all time favorite bodybuilder. I think Sonbaty at the Olympia in 1997 might be the best any bodybuilder has ever looked on stage in history. That could easily beat any modern Olympia winner.

Even in when he was off, Arnold is still winning in most of these photos so you can definitely argue it was a deserved win. For me, 1981 was a much more blatant example of favoritism by the judges.

I live in Australia , and once about 15 yrs ago saw Roger walker and was lucky enough to speak to him about the 80 Olympia.. He was still salty about it then, But would not say too much , he just said what do you think about it ...

He deserved it. Huge, delts, chest , back and arms. His calfs were excellent too. May not have been quite as ripped as Mentzer but Mike had one weaker delt which was obvious and also had a bloated stomach, not a good look. There is no way Mike Mentzer looked better, no way.

There is a documentary of this competition available on UA-cam. It is called The Comeback. It is worth noting that Arnold had been training for a film, I believe “Conan The Barbarian,” when he decided to enter this competition. So it isn’t like he just dropped in out of nowhere.
It's more that he didn't announce he was competing and basically just turned up out of the blue in the eyes of the other competitor's. He clearly did that intentionally because he loved mind games, but it was still an extremely douchy move and it was not ok for the organization itself to allow it. Also his training for the film would have been quite different than it was for actual competition. For filming days he'd have to he functional and capable of doing the action choreography etc, if he went all in on training and cutting like the other competitor's, he'd absolutely not have been capable of shooting that film during the period preparing for the contest. That's why his legs and overall proportion were lagging behind the competition.
Arnold had the best upper body and calves to win 4 out of seven mandatory poses plus he won points on the other poses that he lost so it was a very technical contest.
It was close and it could have gone either way tbh but what gave Arnold the win was his charisma and outstanding posing. Everyone has their own opinions but I believe this to be true

I can understand why Mentzer had a problem with it but I don’t think there was any chicanery. I think part of it was base Arnold is impressive and that his aura of presence overpowered the judges. There are a lot of intangibles that can factor into a judges decision and Arnold had them all.
