WATCH GLADIATORS FIGHT IN A REAL ROMAN ARENA

- On our last day in Nîmes we were lucky to catch the first day of a festival called Les Grands Jeux Romains, or the Grand Roman Games. Every year in Nîmes, there is a giant reenactment of the Roman Games in Les Arènes de Nîmes.
This is one of the biggest reenactments of Roman History in the world, in one of the world's best preserved Roman Arenas. So come watch gladiators fight in a real roman arena with us!
Hey everyone! This video is pretty old now and lots has happened since then! I thought you might like to see some of the stuff we're up to nowadays.
We took a break for awhile, but now we're back! ua-cam.com/video/dJ0Fx7Wa3nI/v-deo.html
We're also trying to make mini docs now instead of vlogs. Here's our 2 best ones at the time of writing this:

What this video is sad😢😢
When did you guys shoot this event exactly ? If so, Gallia is looking dope nowadays
Do I have to purchase Blood & gore DLC for this too?
nah those are free ....only the "With The Eyes Of The Eagle" is charged with 10 Denare
GladEAtors, what do you expect
*EA SPORTS, ITS IN THE GAME*

I realize it's not practical, but I've always wanted to see thousands of people accurately reenact an ancient battle to see what it really would've looked like. This is pretty badass though.
I mean... Thousands showed up to reenact Gettysburg for its 100th anniversary. So... Why not?
Bec there are not thousands of Legionaires in Europe. Its not that crazy thing like the Civil War fans in US where the own Grandgranddads were fighting. The Roman is 2000 yrs ago and its really hard to find fans of this. The Romans were Invaders and interesting for historians, nor for fans. A good and authentic Roman Legionaire Armor costs ca 1500 € and its not easy to take on, and with pilum and Shield a bit space...and remember, east of the Rhine (from Cologne to east) there were no Romans so the eastern part of europe inc Swiss, Austria etc has no historic background. And for to reenact a battle you need all these Legionaires from the same historic age and Division, you cant mix Troops from Julius Caesar (50 bc), Augustus, Caligula and Vespasianus (80 ad) or later...you cant show a historic battle with Troops of Napoleon, US Civil War, First WW and Vietnam...@@huntclanhunt9697
If I was on death row I would want this as my execution
Hmm, not a bad idea, death row prisoners should be gladiators fighting another death row inmate and the one to survive will get like 10 - 20 years more to live
YES I actually think this is a great idea why not capitalize off of not only prisoners but voluntary criminals who are rapists, kidnappers, and coke smugglers. Serious crime people. Give them a choice
@@mr_unreachable5700Mhm, it would be fun
Hell yeah at least have some fun rather than being stuck in a jail cell waiting for the electric chair or lethal injection.

Fast and fearless cause the romans where fearless
Puts UFC to shame.
Rocket Queen rocket queen
Definitely not. It puts pro wrestling to shame maybe.
@@noidontthinksolol That's actually a key part of the fighting's appeal now that I think about it. If grappling techniques would be limited to throws only the MMA would become a ton more exciting. I respect wrestlers but damn it's boring to watch people roll on the floor slowly trying to subdue someone.
@@poisonsquid37 It puts UFC to shame because you was most likely to be killed in gladiator matches.

and then Maximus enters and yells "Are you not Entertained".
It's Maximus
Dude his name is Maximus but that’s probably auto-correct
I rate this comment 8/10.
Marcus Aurelius wasn't a fan of the gladiator games, as most Stoics weren't.
Lol
2:50 Ah yes the Ancient Roman Wave
Another of their inventions that still survives to this day
This is great, keeping new generations informed on the ancient games. This reenactment was very good. This nimes amphitheatre (arena of Nîmes) is one of the best preserved ones and shows the roman builders were truly experts being structurally sound to hold ppl 2000 years later
This is actually a lot more accurate than most people would want you to beleive, the gladitorial games were mock warfare it was very rare for people to be seriously injured or killed in the arena. Think of modern boxing or American football. This is one of the most misunderstood parts of Roman history.
@Boromir I don't see how anyone can come up with that figure, I guess my main point was people weren't killed for sport as is the common misconception, but when you're playing at war there's an obvious higher chance of fatal injury. Modern sports have a high emphasis on player safety since people were dying often in the early days of boxing, football, and even soccer. Many kingdoms in medieval Europe and the Modern Era continued these traditions with sports like jousting and fencing and duels, but it's the same premise, playing at war, not literal death for entertainment. However, I imagine many people at a race car track want to see someone wipe out, so naturally the audience was electrified when this happened in the arena, and it's been more embellished in history, especially Roman Catholic History.
Lol of course people were killed at these events, they were very bloody and gory and people loved it
The One Known As Art too much Hollywood.
The opening day of Rome's Colosseum saw the death of over 8,000 animals and many thousand prisoners/slaves
@Michael Weir Deaths of animals? Sacrifices of animals were common practice in the ancient world, but they didn't sacrifice them and throw them away. They ate them, it was more of ritual slaughter. As far as murdering slaves for fun and entertainment, that's such a myth. Gladiators were athletes not slaves, and slaves were extremely coveted and essential to the Roman economy, so slaughtering them would be doubly stupid and the Romans weren't stupid or cruel enough to do these things. Not to mention, it was the chariot racing that was the main event attraction, not the mock fighting and executions.
I imagine if real soldiers from that time were to see this, they would piss and laugh :D
No shit since this is a show
If you learned more history you while know that representation like this actually happened in greco-roman civilization that they were called amphitheater for acting
This was nothing compared to the real life games.
PoliticsCentral were ya there?
Are you guys fucking dumb or what ?

They should make people in Death row participate in gladiator matches.
No because people in death row are going to die and when participating in gladiatorial fights it whoever stays alive longest wins. Also it's unfair. Some super tough guy could be sentenced to death row for beating 3 people to death, and a skinny, frail guy could be sentenced to death row for recklessly driving and then killing someone during a crash. That would not be a fair match, one guy killed 3 people and is very tough, the other killed one and only by a car, not his body strength. The frail one would surely die.
Caligvla Caesar belive me i would
LittleArmyNut who gets sentenced to death for manslaughter?
caligvla caesar: if they showed it live in the arena and/or on the tv, within 6 months it would be the biggest sport on the planet.
no, because between us and gladiator matches are 2000 years of evolution
They should put all of the football hooligans into the arena and let them battle it out would be so much fun
They use far modern stadiums for that
Sometimes it gets so exciting that the brawl is taken to the streets
now this is what i call SPORT and ENTERTEIMENT.
4:28 now I know they drifted back in Ancient Greece
Edit: I mean Rome
Real fight to the death gladiator fights should still be a thing. Have people sign up and sign a waiver. Winners win the lottery, it’ll lower the crime rate as well. When you sign onto the tournament, you can buy and choose your armor type, weapon, shield, etc. it’d be amazing
just imagine throwing a tomato at the emperor
Nimes. A beautiful place.
They host bullfights in that same arena every year. It’s really a heritage landmark.
We should bring back the Roman games that's how you thin out the criminals let them kill each other in the game's😂👊
Would be so entertaining.
Then I would want to be a criminal
@Reinhard Falkner ?
It is unparallel in the world history.
Romans history above all.
Nope they stole all from greek
Imagine how much more awesome the real thing would be
Tbh IT wouldnt, there was a lot of brutal kills in there, like decapitating animals, making animals brutally kill slaves, and much more.
@@SigmundOrthodoxy Many People would gladly go and kill others so why not in some ARENA ? And not in the Hidden.

"Legions of Romans"
*shows Scandinavians*
Fedora God lol no scandinavians, those were most likely germans and celts
Those are Gauls
It’s in france so they’re gauls
Well Norse were a Germanic people. But considering they are in France, they are most likely representing the Belgae, a Celtic tribe who waged war with The Romans in the late republic era.
Dylan Tennant belgae are from belgium they are gauls
Real Romans, if they could travel into future, would laugh to this charade :D
I Italy we don't have such events, we use the Arena of Verona only for concerts. What a fucking shame
Michele Vogliardi lo so è veramente un peccato
Thank you for taking the time to film and upload.
Thank you for taking the time to watch it! :)
5:43 when you set the battle speed to 2x
it looks like lords mobile ads
Fun fact, they also flooded the Colusium for ship battles(this is not the Colusium)
That's how they did it. Little cuts , and pokes...and practiced routines. It was expensive to kill a gladiator. But when a big festival comes, they did do brutal a gory spectacle.
I mean most of the time they where expected to survive the price you paid as the organiser if a gladiator died that was not supposed to die (a no mercy match for example) was about 50 times as much as the normal lending price
BRO that horse is trained SO WELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It would be so authentic now, watch the gladiator fights and get the plague... awesome
this coming in clutch for my Latin project
Just the fact that that coliseum is still used even after 2,000 years is just mind-blowing.
not the Coliseum
The Tortuga demonstration was awesome.
I could imagine how fun this must have been for plebeians and patricians alike

Incredibile il lascito storico di Roma!

Wow.. this really is an ultimate form of entertainment no wonder it was a thing in Ancient Antiquity
That's emotional one looking so real. By the way killing each other in front of the audience, I be like I can't believe my eyes back than..
In reality they didn't kill each other, most of them were like the modern Wrestlers, maybe there's stiff, but not mortal, but of Course, as In WWE for example, incidents were common and some of them could been killed for a botch.. Bit usually It didn't happen.. The executions were only for Roman Criminals that were condamned to death and if you tuink about It Is One of the most honorable way to condamn to death a criminal, more than the fucilation, fighting in front of the people, of course they know that there was death 100%, but there was worst way to legally kill somebody, even in the XIX century.
Best way of Comedy No blood no gore what a fight
after 2000 ans this arena still people are using this place , bravo
Rome never fell :) thumps up 🆙
FREAKING EPIC!!!!!! ROMA INVICTA!! man this was so awsome they gotta flood the arena next time!! Time to show the people of ROME what it takes to board a Carthaginian battle ship!!

Its hard to imagine how crazy these events were back then, the mob mentality of blood lust that it brought out in normal people its no wonder it was so popular.

Does someone knows how often this type of ''games'' take place ? Where ? Who is the organizer ? =)

one things they got wrong was that gladiators never fought to the death, but to injury the opponent for the entertainment. .. HOLLYWOOD!!!

Send Neymar to one of these stadiums, so he will grow some balls.
Can we acknowledge how the formation did not break at 5:42
Such a goofy he said is it afternoon? like he was gonna flame him for being wrong lol
those were not Romans at first. Germans and Celts you dipwad. Thats what the battle at the end depicted. The constant war of the natives of northern europe and Rome.
You mean BARBARIANS of northern Europe. And Rome, heir of Troy through Aeneas.
Bro said there’s legions marching but they are barbaric 💀

That's how we should treat illegal migrants in Italy who arrive by boats, in the arena for the fun of the people!
Is this like an annual thing? I’m moving to Europe and I’d like to go and see this sometime ! Awesome
Jeez I was only looking for a game on Roblox I didn’t want to find a real gladiator
Where was this? In Verona?
If this was realistic, all the women and slaves would be forced to sit in the top seats.
Nice, song name?
That red booth I saw.. is that where the Emperor sits?
Yes
I'm here from For Honor. I am happy I came here.
Different gladiators used different weapons and tactics to win. Main gladiators were the Secutorus (fast chasers), Sagittarius (bow man), Retiaritus (Fisher man. This is the gladiator in For Honor. Usually armed with a fishing trident and fishing net), and Murillo.
If civilization breaks down. This could come back.
Where did you get the song in the beginning of the video
I was there in the crowd that day and the next .. hot as hell one day the next day on the other side of the arena in the cold
The first one is real, and everybody is laughing at his silly attempts to escape
Hahahah maybe
I cannot express in words my current hard on, upon finding these videos exist. Please provide details, when where and how to join
What I would give to spend one day at the colosseum in 78 A.D. that must have been the most spectacular scene.
ANNO DOMINI I second that! I would love to time travel and be able to see this great empire at it's peak, just for one day

Damn why did we have to be alive in this era and not back then 😂😂 must of been such a buzz
That opener has an extreme amount of trust and rehearsal. Obviously they're not going to go full-bore with sharp swords and trampling, but it would be really easy to accidentally deliver an injurious blow or to get stepped on by the horse. I would imagine that the real historical events would have the horse being used as a weapon itself to run the guy down. The strange thing about this is that it makes you recognize and consider the true events involved actually cutting, slashing, stabbing, bludgeoning, trampling, kicking, biting, and all of the gore with it onto real people just like us. It's an interesting reminder that this new extreme aversion to violence is a very new value. Today, you get expelled from school or arrested for simply getting into a light physical altercation. Hell, a huge portion of the western world's population are traumatized by mean words or disagreement. While I don't really condone gross acts of grievous violence/murder by any means, this constant nerfing/sheltering of people's delicate sensibilities is weakening and killing us. We need to stop pretending that violence has no place/purpose, that everyone can avoid death by ignoring it, and that weakness is NOT a virtue. There are a lot of people who truly equate mean/disagreeable speech or expression to real physical violence. That's why you now find an abundance of lunatics who can't control their emotions try to physically attack someone else for somehow being upsetting. At the very least, we should incorporate some form(s) of martial arts into the educational curricula across the country. Either that, or we make every kid get punched in the face when they climb the academic tiers (elementary, middle, high school). That will help keep them grounded and learn (on even footing) that consequence is a real thing.
Who was that guy with white shirt?
