My Grandfather flew them as a test/evaluation/training pilot for Lockheed 50 years ago. Although he amassed something on the order of 24k total hours and 34 different aircraft....he had a painting of the C5 in his office and was always a favorite of his. He flew P-38's for Lockheed in WWII all the way to the C5. What a span!
That sounds like such an amazing job what an amazing life it must have been to see the evolution of aircraft. What amazing story's he must have of his time serving.
When stationed at the C-5s training base in Oklahoma in the early 90s, I saw pilots performing breathtaking maneuvers with this behemoth. Once I was certain I was witnessing a crash as one was plummeting down at an extreme angle when late in the descent it quickly spiraled out of the dive pulling a full turn, leveled out and calmly landed.
I walked out of my apartment in Tucson one day that was a quarter mile from the NW end of the main runway at DMAFB and as I got to the end of our building I heard a distinct jet engine noise, looked up and saw just what this video shows except I couldn't move as it passed a few hundred feet overhead!
The Aluminum Cloud. You could see these beast coming over the Chesapeake Bay for what seemed like 30 minutes. Standing watch on the NORVA piers and seeing them coming and going from NAS NORVA all the time. Never got old.
It's just mind blowing to me that this monster can even leave the ground.....and so fast. Kudos to the USAF and the designers on this one......they knocked it out of the park
With little or no cargo load. To see the other extreme, check out the videos of C-5s with a heavy load eating up almost every foot of a two mile long runway.
I'm also proud of being american, It's just that I, as an Mexican, I hate the Unitet States Of America, the ridiculous President Trump, I would kill him if I had the chance. Anyway, an American is a person borned in the America continent.
CARLOS CALVARIO He was obviously meaning an American citizen not a person from the continent. You hate trump because he’s actually doing something about illegal immigration!

Those inboard flaps are almost 15 feet wide, which is about a foot less than my 1.5-car garage door on my house. The sheer size of these things is deceptive.
Nice. One just few over my house at 4000ft to land at the local military base. It looked enormous. Never seen one before in this area because the base only has 5900ft runway, which is probably quite short for a C5. The flight path was very unusual, possibly because of low cloud and the surrounding mountains.
That was not a short runway, probably designed for a 747. Watch a C5 on an unprepared runway that is designed for a Cessna 172, that is art of the seat of pants flying and change your shorts.
With Pres Trump arriving a couple of days after this flight it was most likely delivering the Presidential car, aka The Beast, and other vehicles and equipment for his Davos visit.
It is such a shame they took away the TF-39 Turbofans. The sound of them projected enormous power. Now the Galaxy sounds like a wispy toothless tiger ☹
God forbid the Air Force improve the plane....30% shorter takeoff, a 38% higher climb rate to initial altitude, an increased cargo load and a longer range. Who the fuck wants that when you can have such a great sound.
@@Inspadave I've actually heard it. Lived for years near Moffett Field in Northern California. Look it up on the map. My bother said he saw one once flying at extreme low altitude straight east over Arques Avenue apparently struggling to climb. It finally did, he said. MIght have had barely enough airspeed to stay up.
I should invent electric or hydraulic wheel motors that spin the wheels up to speed, to increase their endurance, rather then let them fry on the pavement.
and you're so stupid you waste a lot more just running your mouth. You've watched the cars, the sky, even the fence. Now get back to howling at the moon and chasing cats, or that sort of thing you do best.

A real hero and patriot your Grandfather was
23 years, 7300 hours = I still miss it.
Nice camera work ! Thanks

Moral of the story: Size does matter, size has always mattered, and size will continue to matter in the future.
Thanks for the Video.

This beast defies logic 😳 small town New Zealander here
its crazy to think how strong those engines are to make something that heavy fly!

Just amazing how quickly the Galaxy can get off the ground! It defines smooth and powerful...
This guy: full stop at 7:58 to nose wheel lift off at 8:16.
I miss the sound of the TF-39's
Video clarity was excellent.....😎

Watching videos like these makes me want to build a runway SO bad...
seen one land, take off at Mansfield lahm airport yrs ago....UNBELIEVABLE

Tolles Video, da standen wir beim Takeoff nicht weit voneinander entfernt ;)
What'd that thing stop in, like 1,200 feet?
Guy at 6:08 and i quote...
"Guys thanks for getting her started i had to poop sooooooo bad ill take her from here*
Still amaze how the main landing gear retracted…
Amazing!
Simply Beautiful. I tell you, Smooth As Butter. 😇😇😇.
TF-39 I miss you. 😢
The maintainers don't
It's not the same experience without the TF-39 engines.....
It's better
Inspadave no it’s not
Sounds like the 747-400's engines the GE CF6.
Such an effortless lift off.
AMC command. Airlift specialty.
Imagine the turbulence generated by this beast
thought i was getting stuka dive bombed at the end lol. ww2 documentary flashbacks.
probably just a short shuttle flight to Ramstein Air Base so no cargo and minimal fuel load
So much quieter with the new engines!!
I loved the sound of the tf39's
Isn’t this the same runway that crosswinds made for a tricky landing attempt for that airliner that one time?
It is the same runway...
Ive seen them takeoff in less than 1000ft before. This was a normal takeoff for the wt/fuel load
Where? In 12 years of crewing C5s never saw that short a roll - the airplane is 222 feet long - doubt it can get airborne in 5 plane lengths,
That was not a short runway, probably designed for a 747. Watch a C5 on an unprepared runway that is designed for a Cessna 172, that is art of the seat of pants flying and change your shorts.
short takeoff run - not short runway. Zurich is about 9800 feet
Do you have an idea of this visit?
With Pres Trump arriving a couple of days after this flight it was most likely delivering the Presidential car, aka The Beast, and other vehicles and equipment for his Davos visit.
THank you raymond. Friendly from BZR/LFMU

Haribo 73 to be fair they’re pretty loud I work around F15 and I hated them

And break people's windows miles away, right?
Inspadave I was unaware of all the improvements...makes sense though...thank you for the update.

Thanks for watching captain and shift commander LABonte air mobility command patriot wing commander usaforce MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU
Lovely!
Its so big
Acho fascinante.
It's like some futuristic sci fi movie, but it's real.
Those big planes look like they should fall out of sky.
Yeah...short smooth takeoff indeed...
dang who's the camera man, good look at the planes wing landing
been spang got em loade and fly
An Early Birthday Present. 8/28. 3 Hankie moment. THANK YOU.

oh, there's a good movement of the tail lol
I want some whine with that cheese.
watching the cars now
no TF-39's, not interested!
yep. boring to the ears
I should invent electric or hydraulic wheel motors that spin the wheels up to speed, to increase their endurance, rather then let them fry on the pavement.
A C-5 is not a C-5 with the new engines. It's like it had it's balls removed!
30 seconds of watching the skky
Just isn't the same without the TF-39s. Yawn.
well that was a waste of time
