I flew as a military passenger in a C5 Galaxy from Rhein Main Air Base, Frankfurt, Germany to Dover AFB, Delaware in 1979. Passengers sit on top , seats facing backwards with only an occasional porthole to look outside. Best long distance flight I ever took, lots of leg room between seats for 76 passengers, and flight only cost me about $10 for the in flight box meal. 🐶🤡 Great camera work !
If anyone is interested, the USAF Designation for the C-5M's engines is: F138 GE-100. This engine is better known as the CF6-80C2B-1, and is part of the same family of engines that power the E-4B Nightwatch NAOC, the KC-10A Extender, the VC-25A/Air Force One, and the new KC-46A Pegasus Tanker.
Thank you for a gorgeous video! I was born and raised where these, the C-130 and C-141 were manufactured. As a child seeing these planes being tested was an everyday occurrence. While I like the scream of the TF-39s on the C-5A, they are still distinctive planes and it is still good to see these birds flying. They're like an aluminum overcast as they go overhead, massively impressive.
I'm a Air Force veteran. When I was station at Clark AB Philippines, I would watch the C-5 (FRED) land and take off all the time. This is my favorite cargo plane
This is the new, more powerful "M" model. I spent the last 14 years of my childhood getting to be an amateur planespotter. My father was in the U.S. Air Force. I have always loved watching C-5's and C-130's as they were always around and still are well over 50 plus years later. We were stationed at Ramstein AB West Germany during my senior year of high school and we had frequent C-5's coming and going. The high school at Ramstein is only a few hundred meters off the center line of the bases only runway. It was a particularly blustery, rainy day in early November. We were outside doing our JROTC Color Guard practice for an upcoming event when all 5 of us heard the tell tale "banshee" howling of a C-5 taking off and thought nothing more of it as we huddled in our winter jackets and kept marching around the football field. Fast forward about 120 seconds and we were still hearing those screaming engines and we, almost as one, all stopped to look over our shoulders and that C-5 literally looked as if it were being held motionless by some impossible force, yet it was still pointed skyward. We all just stood there, praying under our breath and willing that beast upwards and onwards. Finally, after what felt like 15 minutes (was probably 2 to 3 minutes) she was clearing the tree lined horizon and we all just stopped for a second to make sure all of us had just witnessed what felt like a miracle against the laws of physics... Beautiful aircraft with a sound completely its own...
What a beautiful Plane...So huge., so loud, so intimidating, but so safe! It looks to be halfway down the runway on take off and it lifts it's nose and gains airspeed!
Old but still good. I was the guy marshalling the C-5. This is when former president trump came to zurich. On departure, we were completely empty except for a tow bar. It was good to be able to show a video to my co-workers of one of my favorite stops in my career.
Such a behemoth. I have been give a chance to see and touch first hand this awesome aircraft.... I'm in awe... Also how short of a take off required to get it off the ground is breath taking....
I was in Wildwood New Jersey, very young and I watched this. The fly over along the coast, south to north, on its first the demonstration flight. It was just stood there and then it was out of sight. Decades later, It's still awesome. Got to fly in two. Other countries may now have bigger, None have better! Plus, we've got C17'S and some much more!
I've been very lucky to have been able to work on the flight-deck of the USS America during the '6 Day War', at 17 years old! And then to have lived on to see how far we've come......................................
Still, to this day I am amazed by this aircraft. I was on the team that developed and built a new brake bleeding system for the Galaxy while I was at Kelly AFB in San Antonio during the mid 70's. I still stand in wonder when these birds float over my mom's house in SA making their approach toward Kelly/Lackland AFB.
Mike Connor I caught a ride from Yakota back to Korea in a C-5 back in about 83. Perhaps it was you piloting. Anyway those were indeed fond memories. I salute you, Sir.
Thank you for taking this video and sharing. I must say, this model sounds nothing like the "A's" do. The C5-A and B52s would make the shingles on your roof do quite a dance when one of them would be taking off. And so were the Good Ole Days.
I am retired US Air Force and can remember when the C-5 entered service in the early 1970's. I thought it was an amazing aircraft then and nothing has happened to change my mind. I had a chance to fly on one space-A coming back from Asia in the 1980's. Have to hand it to the hard working maintainers that keep these planes flying ... this one has been in service for more than 35 years! I'll bet the crew is younger than the aircraft.
First time I saw one. In basic training at Lackland. We had been there a few weeks so our TI knew us by then and would be human sometimes. We were in formation and he faced us. "See that? That's a C-5. And that is why you do all this shit. If you can't do this you can't do that." TSgt Marcum early 80s. I watched a C-5 land nose gear up at Clark. The jet survived with relatively minor sheet metal and gear repairs. Lots of sparks and concrete dust though.
I've literally driven a 5-Ton military truck from one end to the other through the cargo bay of the C-5 during my USAF career. Also did several Pacific transports as a passenger. The passenger deck is the hump in front of the tail. These guys are enormous and fly incredibly smooth.
I missed my Port of Call, 747 commercial flight out of San Francisco Airport, and had to take a hop on the old C-5 Galaxy, all the way to Kadena Air Base in Japan, from Travis AFB, Ca. Man, was that a Looong flight, especially without any windows to look out... Almost 12 hours.
Took a lot of SPACE-A flights on C-5's out of Rhein-Main AB (when it was open adjacent to FRA) and Ramstein AB back in the 90s and early 2000s. Thanks US Air Force!
I love to watch any military plane land and take off, but the large ones are something to watch taking off (it seems like they just start their roll and nose wheel come off the ground and they are in the air) Thanks for a wonderful video. (Mississippi gulf coast, USA)
They look near stationary in flight as well. You can't help but look for the wires holding it up. I used to live near Travis AFB in Calif and they were an awesome sight. Wonder how often the tires need to be changed after landing such a huge plane?
Not sure about it bus I have a number in my mind that a shell can go through at least 200 landings before they put another layer of rubber around it.
@@ZurichAirportSpotter A lot more than I would have thought lol. But guess the tires are made to hold up to heavy landings. Thanks for taking the time to answer.
Short take off wow!
"Operation Nickle Grass" first deployment.
Grrr...that Azerbaijan A340 blocked the touchdown!!! At least it was the best looking A340 out there! Still, amazing video mate! :)
Is it a coincidence that the blue whale is the largest whale and the A346 (in this case with a blue livery) is the largest aircraft that can use this parking position? Anyway, thanks for watching, glad you've enjoyed it :)
Haha, it is a coincidence indeed!
Yeah, I really wanted to see that touchdown, too.

I prefer the GE TF39. Sounds a lot better and the fan looks really unique.
I prefer this new engine. It gives the aircraft better performance.
Agreed the sound is unique but with the CF6 you are essentially gaining an extra engine worth of thrust at the maximum continuous power setting.
it looks so damn badass
12:05 how is that possible? a helicopter can't lift off that quick
Light load, lots of flaps and probably full power during takeoff are my best guesses.. Very impressive indeed.
great video quality!
Thank you!
A remarkably short takeoff roll.
Superb !
