In order to save Captain Kirrahe, you will need to complete four objectives that are part of the side mission "Virmire: Assisting Kirrahe's Team." These objectives must be completed in the order they appear, or else Kirrahe will die during his team's diversion.
The squadmate you left with the Salarians - either Ashley or Kaidan - will let you know what these objectives are over the radio.
The first objective is to disable Geth communications. When you reach the Communications tower, you will face heavy Geth resistance. Once you’ve cleared out all the enemies, simply head up to the second floor, approach the Triangulation Tower console and deactivate it to disrupt the enemy’s communications.
When you complete any of the objectives you will be given an on-screen notification, so there is no doubt when the deed is done.
[boom-boom-ching-boom-boom-ching]
The second objective is to destroy the Geth satellite uplink. As you approach this fortified location, you will notice a satellite dish on top of the building. You simply need to shoot it down or use biotics to destroy the dish. Destroying the equipment at the bottom of the base does nothing so be sure you take out the satellite dish on the roof.
As you make your way across the raised catwalks, Ashley or Kaidan will chime in to let you know the third objective - which is to destroy some geth flyers located at a nearby refueling platform. Shoot them all down or destroy them how you see fit, then proceed to the entrance of the base.
Once you reach the doors, one of your squadmates will hack the console and give you two options - disable the alarms or trigger alarms on the other side of the base to take the pressure of your team. In order to save Kirrahe, just disable the alarms. Do not trigger alarms on the far side of the base. Otherwise Kirrahe will be killed in the fighting.
This is the fourth and final objective you must complete. With these tasks accomplished, Kirrahe will survive the mission.
I’d also like to point out that the decision to save Ashley or Kaidan is completely independent of what you need to do to save Kirrahe. So if you decide to double back and save the squad member you assigned to defend the bomb, Kirrahe will still survive, so long as you completed the four required objectives mentioned in this video.
After the mission, Kirrahe’s crew will remain on the Normandy briefly and you can speak with the Salarian captain.
In Mass Effect 2, you'll learn that Mordin once served under Kirrahe in STG. You can speak with him about it. Mordin's dialogue will be slightly different depending on whether Kirrahe survived ME1 or not.
During Mass Effect 3, you will have the opportunity to speak with Kirrahe again at several points, starting with Priority Sur’kesh. Kirrahe has since been promoted to Major. He’ll offer to support Shepard’s plan to retake Earth and is recruited as a war asset.
If Thane died or was not recruited in Mass Effect 2, then Kirrahe can play a major role during the attack on The Citadel. When Kai Leng tries to assassinate the Salarian Councilor, Kirrahe will sacrifice himself to save the Councilor’s life. Just like Thane, Kirrahe will die during this encounter.
This is important because if Thane and Kirrahe are both out of the picture, then Kai Leng will kill the Salarian Councilor. This will make it more difficult to convince Ashley or Kaidan to stand down at the end of the mission because Udina will show them fabricated security footage making it look like Shepard killed the Councilor. But that’s a topic for another video... - Ігри

HOLD THE LINE
Do you know for a fact that this is the only way to save him? I read years ago that you only needed to take out the geth flyers and disable the alarm to save him. Thanks
Personally prefer to get job done and go home.
@@ANCIENTWARRI0R not the only way to save him true but atleast if someone was having trouble saving him this is the guaranteed way to save him. Saved him but i just did my job, trying to destroy the facility, mission first but saved him in the process so win win for me atleast
Completionists: "Kirrahe can DIE?!"
my thoughts exactly.
Literally me.
Me on every video like this that he makes 😂
I didn't know he could die. I always do all those little side objections.
Indeed. It never occurred to me that I could just let him die, or push extra pressure onto the Salarian forces to make things easier on my own strike team... it was a joint operation and anything I could do to support or aid my partners made natural sense.
The better they got on, the easier things would be for me in the long run. That's how these things work, right? The only way I can see that you'd *want* to get Kirrahe killed is if you're roleplaying an actually xenophobic Shepard.
Fun little detail in ME2 - When talking about Kirrahe, Mordin tells you he doesn't like holding the line, and prefers to get the job done and go home. This is foreshadowing because Mordin has one of the lowest Hold The Line scores for that phase of the Suicide Mission at the end of the game, especially if his loyalty mission isn't done. To maximize your overall team's chances of survival, it's a good idea to either send Mordin back to the Normandy with Chakwas and the crew, or take him with you to the final boss fight at the station's core, as in both cases he won't be holding the line and dragging down the team's average.
200 iq
It's little details like that makes the characters really fleshed out imo
I always send him back with the crew, it just makes sense. He's a doctor, they need medical attention and Dr.Chakwas is not feeling well at this point
@@segevkrespi8609 I always bring him with me against Collectors, his Incinerate is broken against them.
@@padmakshkhandelwal1832 true but once your high level and have the right powers you can do well without him.
I found the sentinel to be ridiculously overpowered against collectors in my last playthrough, AP or warp ammo + warp to destroy their barriers and armor and they are easy game. Having Thane/Samara/Miranda + Grunt/Garrus in your squad and you walk through the suicide mission even on insanity difficulty
One of the best things about this series is the small details like ME1 with Kirrahe with his famous hold the line speech and Mordin mocking him in ME2 is just satisfying.
Mordin's not mocking him perse. It's more like friendly teasing.
I always thought doing all of those objectives were required in order to complete Virmire. Lol, so he never died in any of my playthroughs.
Same xd
You mean you never tried setting off the alarms on the other side of the base just to see what happened? (because that's a straight paragon vs renegade choice from memory)
Glad I wasn't the only one.
I never knew he could live lol. I don't listen to the radio chatter during the missions, one I can't hear it over the gunfire and two I usually tune out dialogue during fights in video games. It's one of the stupidest gaming troupe imo, " I know we're in a fight to the death but let me tell you how impressed I am that you've made it this far and how I'll take over the world once you're dead"
I think a cool video idea could be what effects your Shepard’s backstory has on dialogue.
Does deserve a video, but basically: outside of ME1, where you get 1 of 3 side-quests tailored to your background, it's just a handful of throwaway lines in ME2-3, acknowledging your background, usually your actions during the Skyllian Blitz or Torfan.
@@Marshal_Dunnik - you also get an additional comment during the From Ashes DLC of ME3 referencing life on Mindoir if Shep is a colony kid.
I choose "Earth Born" this time around. And a few times, in 2 and 3, there were some interesting references that can be heard. As well as some story NPCs make a more direct refrance to being Earth Born, more so then theother 2 choices
I remember the lady that was captured in the raid on Mindoir the same raid that killed Shepard's parents if you chose spacer I believe.
Of you go with spacer (or the one where you grew up in a military space station, I don't remember which one it is tbh) you get to call Shepherd's mom on the phone in 1 and 3
They forgot the part when Cerberus attacks the research center and he shoots a bunch of guys with the Scorpion pistol to help clear the way for Shepherd
Wow I genuinely didn't know about him saving the Salarian Counciler. These games are so weird for what has giant branching possibilities and what doesn't.
Yeah, Thane always dies if you kept him alive in 2. The major will die if Thane isn't there. If neither are, the councilor dies and you lose a chunk of EMS.
I think this many choices and possibilities makes the trilogy the best game se in the last 20 years, from all the games i heave finished my nr1 is still ME 1,2,3.
and for that reason the ending is so hated, hundreds of choices resulting in thousand of scenarios and we only get 3 endings, 4 with dlc
His death there is almost sadder than Thane’s for me. Thane is still trying to hold it together and act strong, but Kirrahe sounds so defeated if he falls to Kai Leng. It’s good that he doesn’t have to die if you do it all right.
@@ShadowLimited310 i agree i am one of the people who does not like the endings, destroy would heave been ok if it would heave killed only the reapers, since the ships survived+ the normandy why would EDI and the geth die and EDI main core is on the normandy si only her mobile platform could heave been "killed"
“We lost another salarian” that’s all he is? Another salarian to you???
Well, I suppose Bailey didn't met Kirrahe so it wouldn't make sense for Shepard to say "We lost Major Kirrahe". Bailey would be like "Who? lol"
@@adrielic_ at least Shepard isnt alienist and remembered his face and skin tone
That's the Problem with Dialog and money vs ingame-choice. to spare money, all the dialogs are pretty close to neutral in the cutscene. "another Salarian" makes sense, cause Bailey does not know Kirahe and it's more in character for a renegade Shepard. A Paragorn-line like "We lost a great Salarian soldier!" won't make sense if you played are rather (xenophobe) Renegade Shep. and making more fitting Dialog for Paragorn and Renegade cost money.
This is exspecially frustrating in the german version. While english got only "you", German got "du" (=you) and"sie". "Du" is the more friendship like version while "Sie" is the more distant form of adressing a stranger or ranked person. The german Shepard always uses "sie" even on Bro-mance characters like Garrus,Wrex, and Tali etc.....For Renegade, it's makes sense, but for a german paragorn Shepard, it's just sound awful after a while.
It's a lot shorter than: "We lost Major Kirrahe!" "Who?" "A solarian STG member and a friend."
Military members are trained to communicate in the shortest most efficent terms possible because you're operating under very tight time constraints where every *literal* second counts.. It might be offensive to some but if you stop to adjust your speech to add pleasantries every time you talk in a combat situation, seconds turn into minutes, minutes turn into deaths. In this situation, the figure heads of the entire galaxy are at risk.
We live in a time where everyone gets caught up on the "emotion" of words, even when lives are on the line and people could die.
@@Aaron-qe9ms OORRRRRRR “we lost a friend” or “we lost a good man”
A mass effect content creator? On 2021? And on top of that a GOOD content creator?! Well, I'm subbed, no doubt about that!
Thanks!
First thought: “What do you mean 2021?!”
Second thought: “Holy heck, it’s 2021 :/“
Mordin's comment on just "doing the job and go home" always gets a smile out of me.

Damn even Kirrahe got promoted but not Shepherd. 🤣
To be fair shepard did die and was working with a terrorist cell for a year
@almalone3282 I am dam sure Shepherd would have been a 1 star at least at the start of ME3 had that not happened, lol.
I think it’s messed up that you get more war assets by letting him die. He was one of the best side characters, he deserved better.
i think the idea is consequences. it's easy being the "good guy who save everyone" when doing so always works. but sometimes you need to choose between completing the mission or saving everyone. that's what renegade is about, recognizing that you can't always save everyone.
sadly diverting to save him doesn't seem yo have impact on the mission, so i think it ws done to compensate for that.
@@ransherman1611 Yep, and it's also a lesson in life that, despite doing the right thing and being the "good guy," sometimes things still don't work out the way you'd want them to.
If he thinks it's messed up that letting Kirrahe die nets you more assets in ME3.... then does he know that letting Wrex die in ME1, allowing Eve to die by destroying Maelon's research data, and then betraying the krogan and sabotaging the genophage cure in ME3 gets you a BUNCH more war assets?
If u need the extra resources then ur doing a shit job at this game
@@billsutherby Unless I missed something back when I was researching the war assets gained from your decisions across all three games, the bonuses gained from killing Wrex, destroying Maelon's data, and sabotaging the genophage cure only give you a net gain of 20 war assets. Might end up being +45 if you can keep Mordin alive as well. The only positive I saw was getting the Salarian First Fleet with + 150 War assets, but these 3 actions to get the fleet result in -130 against your war assets. Urdnot Wreav is only 25 to Wrex's 30 so it's -5, destroying the data causes -50 to the Krogan Clans, and you lose the +75 from Krogan Mercenaries (only exist if Wrex leads Clan Urdnot) so effectively another -75. I know +20 is still +20, but it's not that much better in terms of Total War Assets.
Feel free to point out something I missed. I only did a quick runthrough on the notes I made over 6 years ago, so I could've easily missed something.
The different choices you make in ME3 and the differences in War assets gained or forgone is largely inconsequential. There may be slight variations, but the points are pretty much always very comparable. I.E. when it comes to the Krogan and Salarian war assets, provided you go all in on one or the other, the point difference is minimal. Same thing with saving the Rachni Queen or not, the points from the Rachni and Aralahk Company are pretty close. Like most Paragon and Renegade choices throughout the series, it makes much less difference which choice you make, and is more important that you just actively do as many side missions as possible.
I always go out of my way to save him. I adore his character and was crazy excited to see him in 3
I always loved his "hold the line" speech.
to this day i still question how Kirrahe and his men are saved if you go back to save the squadmate guarding the bomb, and why the squadmate you sent with him doesn't also get saved if this scenario plays out. what, does he have star trek 'beam me up' tech that he didn't bother to share? did he just abandon whoever you sent with him?
I don't need sleep, i need answers!
You have a point there but he does tell you after Virmire that many of his squadmates died, and the one who you send to support him was one of them, it's not hard to imagine. If I remember correctly
I always assumed the two squads split up after actually reaching the facility, Kirrahe's squad managed to fall back and the other got pinned down. The first squad manged to escape the blast zone allowing them to get picked up in between when the bomb goes off and the meeting begins.
The salarians split into 3 teams as a diversion for Shepard. The lost squadmate is embedded with one of them. Kirrahe is with another. When the bomb is set, the 3 teams try to pull back. Two teams succeed, but the team including the squadmate is pinned down.
I never knew the councilor could die during the confrontation with Kai Leng....I've always had thane or kirrhae take the hit.
I was really hoping he was going to become a sqaudmate at some point. He was an awesome character and deserved it. Other than Mordin, the series seems particularly against giving you salarians as teammates... l wonder why.
The series is pretty mean to Salarians in general. They're either shown as idiots or dickheads, apart from Mordin and Kirrahe.
@@intergalactic92 Don't forget Paddok Wiks, pretty much one of the best replacement characters in the event a vital companion is dead in ME3
I mean, Salarians just aren't great companion material in the first place. They're squishy and weak, and they don't live very long lore-wise. They aren't adept at using biotics. That means they could only use guns or tech but we have people who can use guns and tech already as companions. Much more interesting people too. Mordin was funny but I NEVER used him as a companion except when he was mandatory. Then again I always built my Shepard to where he could shake off just about any attack levied against him.
@@allykayalltheway6631 you can say your racist against salarians its ok, lol

Damn, the map was so confusing I forgot to destroy the Geth flyers and didn't know saving Kirrahe is an option until now.
I keep watching your new videos of mass effect Trilogy
Much appreciated!
I always assumed that he would die no matter what, on the next playthrough I will save him for sure!
The absolute level of detail and passion that’s obvious in these games...I want this BioWare back
Now I really want to go and do this all again! That ME3 meeting was so wholesome
One of the best speeches in any game. Man Bioware has awesome speeches in general. Especially in Origins. Alistair's speech before the final battle is just awesome
What a great example of branching s storylines. Perfect for Mass Effect
I saw Kirrahe as one of the main Salarians in the story, so letting him die was not an option to me. Man, him dying to save the councilor somehow hurts more than Thane, because he straight up dies right there cheering you on. You don’t see very many Salarians literally shielding someone like that, by far one of the better of his species.
That was one of the worst death scenes I've ever seen! The way it was executed felt like it was a bad cartoon segment!
I've literally replayed ME1 at least 8-10 times. Never once did I realize Kirrahe could die before ME3
Honestly, it never even occured to me that the first three were optional.
I love Kirrahe, and his fight on Sur'kesh xD
I always wondered about about that, thanks for answering the what if's through this video
Very good information. I don't know what I kept missing but I'm glad I watched this now.
Didn't even think it was possible until I lucked into it last night. Came over to your channel just now to find out how I did it. 😁
Thank you so much Dan! I'm currently playing Mass Effect 1 on my PS3 I thought there was no way of saving him
I love watching in preparation for the legendary edition 😊
I Like that they reward you for putting effort in.
I have been playing this game for years and I never knew you could save him!!!! Oh my gosh!! I am gonna replay the game now!!!
I just played through Virmire as my second Shep and I saved Kirrahe!! What a good feeling :) I look forward to seeing the events with him in ME3 play out different from when I didn't save him.
Lol you have 6.66 subs, that's awesome. Plus I never knew you could save him. Thanks
Must say, ever since encountering Kirrahe so many years ago, every time a "Hold the Line" moment on any piece of fiction, be it movies, TV shows, books, and/or video games, I'll always reference the guy at some point, mostly sayings that he'll be very proud of this in case the moment is a success.
Wonder if he was actually around in case Thane was the one who saved the salarian Councillor?
I always appreciate your reviews of this game. You've been instrumental in helping me navigate the difficult decisions. Some gamers hate spoilers, but I don't mind them. I like to know what I'm up against. Thanks!!
The little things you can easily miss. I never knew I could save Kirrahe until I saw your video. I just thought he always died.
Thank you Dan. No how many times I play Legendary Edition I forget or my nerves. Thanks.
“We lost another salarian...”
Ouch! He has a name!
I didn't know he could be saved. I'm definitely will do this when I get the remaster!
I appreciate you making this video because I actually really liked kirrahe and I was sad when he died in the first one with the character I'm going through now so I'm going through the Mass effect legendary edition right now with one character and then I'm going to go through it again with them Fem Shep but I want to save Kirrahe
I love how I saved him without even trying lol.
hold the line
I never knew that you could save him...this is awesome!!! Oh well, guess I have to go back and replay though the trilogy again. What a shame, lol.
This guide worked during my first few playthroughs a couple years ago. When I recently started playing again, I followed this guide and Kirrahe died both times. It doesn't affect the game significantly but I'm still saddened when I learn of his death despite my efforts.
I always miss the second objective because I thought destroying the bottom equipment was enough, but Kirrahe always survives.
Becaause your thought right. You only need to destroy the bottom equipment. The others don't matter.
Good man, good tips
I just saved him at first because he wasn't an idiot like the other STGs (i.e.: rentola) and I always save him. I don't know why you wouldn't help the STG in Virmire
The only reason I've ever let Kirrahe die is because of ME3's war assets. Kirrahe is worth 20 war assets, but of he dies on Virmire in ME1 you'll get Lt. Tolan instead for 30 war assets. I was really trying to maximize the war assets score on that run since I didn't have consistent internet at the time, and couldn't do the multiplayer.
How am I only finding out now in 2021 that you can save Captain Kirrahe?!?! He was always one of my favorite characters from ME1 and I always wished that there was more content with him. Guess it's time to start another trilogy run... You know... After the run I'm currently in the middle of... 😅
This is awsome, in the game I just didn't destroy the flyers and thought that kirahie died no matter what, good to know I can save him he was cool
Back in day when it was released, i always saved him. It was way back before guides and YT, saved him randomly.
It was nice to see him in ME3 but odd that in ME2 i didn't see him. And i was wondering why his green skin changed to brown.
Maybe a part of salarian aging?
I can‘t wait for the legendary edition
Thanks for sharing these Dan.. but these are pretty much the things any thorough and careful player has done... Kirrahe has survived in every one of my ME1 runs... oh well 👍
Dam, I never realised he could live. I will rectify this on my legendary playthrough!
You can save Kirihe even if you trigger the alarms on his side and for some reason even if you save the crew member who wasn't with them. So in that scenario how does he survive? Teleportation yea.
I did everything except take out the Geth Flyers because I missed any mention of it while I was playing and he died :(

I have never clicked so fast
Have you considered reviewing the ending mods for Mass Effect 3 that are available on Nexus mods?
Cool I saved him and didn't even realize it was optional!
He held the line when no one else could.
Rest In Peace Kirrahe
I actually choose to trigger the alarms on the other side of the base, and Kirrahe still ended up surviving, as last as I completed the other objectives.
Although I didn’t really notice any gameplay differences that would made any benefits to me when compared to just disabling the alarm.
Perfect. Subscribed
This should have ended with" until next time, hold the line"
I saved Kirrhae thanks to this video.
One of my favorites who doesn't get enough time in game...we WILL HOLD THE LINE!
Well damn. I completed the game 2 days ago and didn't know you could save him. I did the first and last objectives on accident.
You know, I didn't even know he could survive until this video, in all my playthroughs I must have always missed one of the objectives without realising it even existed.
Big Edit! Big Dan has it close to right as it's a crap shoot otherwise. You can miss the flyers and still save him. I did it on my first playthrough by accident (probably a glitch or hidden timer as I was running through at warp speed missing the prisoners and goody boxes, don't know as I tried it again and again and only did it one more time of dozens of replays to test it here today). I know you absolutely keep the guards in fighting you, it's the most important.
BIG TIME EDIT RETRACTION! There is a time I think. Did a couple runs at it and the fewer of those side fights you do the less time you have. Also do not go past then reload and return or he will be dead automatically. It's like the Metroid door glitch in a way. So basically do them all and take your time at it before bullrushing ahead. Big Dan is spot on about that.
Kirrahe's phrase made me think of the song Hold The Line by Major Laser lol.
After however many damn play throughs, and all these years..... I had no clue.... I should have caught on...
Who could dislike these videos??
From other wikis I've read -- and based on my own personal experience last night where I missed the satellite uplink -- it seems like only the Geth Flyers need to be destroyed for the good Captain to survive.
I'm anxious to play the remaster. I hope they don't mess with the ammo system. I loved frictionless materials upgrade. I could hold down the fire button all stage without overheating.
I'd like to see the loot system revised. I'm playing the original and Tali is still wearing her starting armor...
I've played through this over 30 times, I had no idea he could die.
Same but I thought he always died no matter what!
just played this mission on LE and i was dead set on leaving ash behind when i started...But after having some dialogs on the Normandy and spending time with the characters again the choice was as hard as it was the first time around...Sorry Ash , you will be missed
Bonne vidéo. 👍😄
In my most recent play through 2 weeks ago I set the alarms off and it said that the captain got killed yet Kirrahe still survived.
i think i only got him kill once but i never destroyed the satelite on the second objective (always thought it was the thing down not up) and half of the time I use the alarms as distration so you don't need to completed all the objective for kirahe to survive maybe half of them is enought.
*"WE WILL HOLD THE LINE!"*
A mistake you can destoy the satellite dish by shooting the power units. But they take some shots. I have never ever shot the dish on the top. (And they survived) By shooting those PSU units it can be done and you get objective completed.
as far as i know you just have to disable the fighters to save kirrahe. but i could be wrong.
but man i love kirrahe. seeing him die for the counsler was one of the hardest moments of mass effect for me
He´s probably a big fan of
I didn't even know he could be saved!
I didn't even know about the Geth flyers 😲 *That's* what I always miss on Virmire to save Kirrahe! I always get him killed😟 Well, now thanks to you I know what to do on my next playthrough😊
This went very differently for me and I always found it puzzling. For my playthrough, I recruited Thane and he survived ME2, and I also saved Kirrahe in ME1 and he sacrificed himself to save the salarian councilor. Then later, during the apartment party, I found out that Thane had somehow died and the salaraian counselor was there for some reason to offer his condolences. Never understood what the heck happened there.
At one point in ME3, Thane dies from the illness he had back in ME2. Kepler's Syndrome I think? Although I think that was after the Citadel mission. Maybe that had something to do with it? I dunno, I've always had Thane show up.
As stated in the video, for Thane to actually come to save the councilor, you must talk to him in Huerta Memorial in ME3 before the Cerberus attack. My theory is that the conversation never took place initially and Thane's implication had the event of him surviving as trigger, but then they added the conversation and made it the trigger condition and removed the surviving one since most likely that one was used for this conversation to happen. Then they forgot to make the same change to the scene with the salarian councilor offering his condoleances(heck, even his death might actually could have been removed which makes this scenario the only one where Thane could have survived until ME3 finale).
He definitely held the line.
I never knew I was supposed to take out the satellite however I've always misfired and hit it
On my playthrough just now, I did all four points, the first two I was notified i did, the third there was no notification but I cleared all the drones and the fuel things, kirrahe still died?
"Kirahe has since been promoted to Major." Yeah and he's no longer green either. How does no one else ever mention that he isn't even the same color
I never knew that you could even save him....and I have played this maybe 20 times lol
Kirrahe... In WWII the 101st screaming Eagles had a battalion, 206 called Currahee.
Basically, you have to 100 percent all of the Virmire side quests and deliberately pick the Paragon option of just turning off the alarms. The results are that you guarantee the Salarian Councilor survives (because plot hands Shepard the Idiot Ball for dealing with Kai Leng forcing a Heroic Sacrifice from SOMEONE), and you get a cool demo of the sticky grenade pistol.
This video has want me to hold the line
Watching this after playing legendary edition is a very big WOW moment. I can't believe the graphics were so bad haha.
So that's what I did wrong... I missed the communications array on top of the Geth facility on Virmire, only destroying the equipment below it.
