XLNT video, John! Locals here in Hawaii, usually eat squid/octopus one of two ways...Raw or dried. For dried cephalopods, separate the tentacles & marinate overnight. Myself, am no fisherman, only consumer so don't have any marinade recipes to share!-lol. But they're usually dried in screen dry box, approx. 7-10 days, depending on weather. Or smoked over local mesquite or acacia wood....Keep them videos coming....ALOHA from Hawaii!
it's always great to see the respect you show to the animals you catch in dispatching them quickly and humanely. Great video once again and loved the underwater camera! Its amazing the difference between 2 sets of organisms, humans and cephalopods, that are studied together so closely because of their mental advancements.
It is a risky thing showing the dispatch on camera as there are so many trigger hungry people out there. But I felt it was important to educate people how to humanely and efficiently do the task. It is the ultimate respect for your food.
@@TheFishLocker true John. Thing is squid are probably the easiest and quickest catch to dispatch. I remember my dad showing me how too do it years ago as a kid, thinking I’d get upset but I didn’t. I’ve since shown my boys how to do it they’re 11 & 14 and neither were taken back or upset by it. The only reply I got was “is that it” I was like yes lads that it. The others two we caught they both despatched them themselves, no problem whatsoever. My dad taught me, and now I’m teaching my kids and they love it, especially the night fishing🙂👍
Nice to see a good squid session. I always remember my son's first boat trip with me and a caught a good-sized squid. The creature soaked me like a fire hose, and my son freaked. Then it proceeded to ink which freaked him out a second time. Good memories, and good advice not to bring them straight into the boat. All the best to you all.
Great video!! Learning about fishing squid was very interesting, but I really appreciate the simple “wetting the line” technique!! Fishing my whole life and never done it!! Another great video John. Yes got to see Jim the father in law cook us up some beautiful squid dish with some freshly caught squid in his lovely kitchen. Quick question john does Jim pickle or store any of his allotment peppers, fruits etc from his allotment for the coming winter months ahead? Just like to know out of curiosity. My dad has a huge allotment it’s not his land he rents it off worcestershire council and come the end of summer into Autumn he starts the process of pickling some of his peppers, onions, and fruits so he can make jams etc plumbs anything he can pickle really. Just wondering if Jim does the same? Also could you do us a Sole catch and cook video if you get chance. Love Sole meat absolutely beautiful😋👍
Great nights viewing, plenty information and a laugh at your mates expense. Good lesson in despatching the squid, once again thanks for a entertaining video John. 👍
I thought it was important to show the swift, humane and efficient way to do it so people would know and it wouldn’t cause them any distress. It is only showing your catch and food the respect it deserves. 👍🏻🦑

Epic, i nearly pissed myself laughing with that jet of water to the face, really have got interested in this squid fishing this year, am getting everything ready and planned for next year and will get out and get some, perfect bait for the cod back where im from in East Anglia, this was great fishing, glad you posted this John, thanks for sharing

Having had cuttlefish before (cooked by my good wife, and very tasty) I can imagine these are good eating. Look forward to the 'catch and cook'. Sorry to your friend, had to watch that squirt in the face clip quite a few times! Best wishes, Kev & co
Great video as per mate. I moved outside to western Australia a few years back and got right into squid fishing, great to see it's becoming more popular in the UK... We just use single jigs out here, usually the 2-2.5 size on 8ft light spinning gear it's alot of fun. Except when the sharks and Samson fish nick em. @@TheFishLocker Thanks for the info. My fishing days were in the mid 1950s - mid 1960s and as I said I never saw any caught, mind you we didn't have such posh tackle back then. That may well have been the reason.

Hi, big fan of your channel and seeing this video reminded of a guy I was chatting to in Plymouth one afternoon a few years back, and he was telling me that he caught a 3.5kg squid down at Elphinstone car park, I'll be honest and say I did doubt him until he showed me a photo of it. Was an absolute monster.
I’ve always wanted to fish for squid and I live on the coast in a good area for squid have been to busy but I did catch one accidentally whilst fishing for a different species. Then I just noticed your video what a brilliant fully informative film now after watching I am armed with everything I need to know and now more keen to give it a go soon👌

I think it's about time I did and this really helped technically and motivationally, thanks John 👍 I'm just thinking of a small marina near me that is well lit up at night, it's a bit snaggy on the bottom but worth a go I reckon.

I'll be back down soon trying other tactics with more gear ordered offline to put to use, the mackerel numbers have been thin so and it's enjoyable trying something completely different and reaping the rewards. Looking forward to the squid cooking vid. It will be interesting to see what dishes are made. Please include the detail of the cleaning and preparing and how to get the ink if needed for e.g. a risotto. P.S. Are squid only around southern coastal waters or can they be caught in Scottish waters ?
Great one John. You weren't squirting your pal on purpose, were you?? Of course not, why would I say that! There seems to be loads of squid everywhere at the moment. I've caught them in Cornwall, Hampshire and Sussex during the last month alone. I don't know if they are feeding on the prawns which are moving off into deeper water at night. They definitely use those lights to hunt by though. Full moons are epic.
John, I heard the ink is great for putting into pasta !! 🤔 Lidls regularly have vacuum packing machines for cheap... I use mine on small roach etc. for deadbaits, I also use it on red maggots left over after a session...I've found they degrade less doing this .... 😎👍☘️🍺

@@MrRiverspider have you ever gone night fishing? It’s the only time you’ll catch squid tbh.
Looking forward to the squid cooking vid. It will be interesting to see what dishes are made. Please include the detail of the cleaning and preparing and how to get the ink if needed for e.g. a risotto. P.S. Are squid only around southern coastal waters or can they be caught in Scottish waters ?
I have personally caught squid up on the NE coast so you might get them there. 👍🏻
Amazing John how a simple rig can get most out of fishing I wouldn’t be surprised if a huge cod can eat them at that size ❤
Would need a big old cod for that squid!!
@@TheFishLocker cod of a lifetime for any angler
Such an interesting creature - cheers
👍🏻👍🏻
My pleasure. 😊🦑
Sign of the changing ecosystem balance that’s all mate.
Que buenos calamares, están buenísimos rebozados, enhorabuena
They are wonderful aren’t they. So tasty. 😊👍🏻🦑
John, I heard the ink is great for putting into pasta !! 🤔
Lidls regularly have vacuum packing machines for cheap... I use mine on small roach etc. for deadbaits, I also use it on red maggots left over after a session...I've found they degrade less doing this ....
😎👍☘️🍺
I have got one just didn’t want to get it out of the house and into the garage at stupid o’clock
@@TheFishLocker You lazy barsteward !! 😂👍☘️🍺
@@peterfitzpatrick7032 - not worth the wrath of waking the rest of the household mate. It’s self preservation. Not laziness.
@@TheFishLocker as someone who lives alone , I don't have that "problem" ... ☹
Thanks for putting this video up and so quickly after I asked you for squid tip's. But one question, as I don't have access to a boat can I fish off a harbour wall and point a spotlight down to the water?
Yes you can. 👍🏻🦑
Its not a Fish Locker video until you hear "bad weather". Lol
At least you know the videos are honest, current and time relevant. 😉 saw someone post a video last week that still had all the green leaves on the trees. 🤣
