  • New England Captures the Essence of Gravel Culture | The "Newbury Blueberry" Route: You love gravel, right? You ride for many reasons. For the scenery, the people, the unique businesses, the adventure. It's all about the culture. There's no better place in the world, that's a fact, that captures the essence of gravel bike culture than New England. Vermont alone has over 8000 miles of pastoral gravel roads. Thats where we are in this episode, in the peaceful little town of Newbury, VT. Did you also know that almost every Vermont town still has an old school general store that services the town? Imagine pedaling through story book landscapes then coming up on a quaint general store that serves restaurant quality food from the farm down the street and locally roasted iced coffee or a local craft beer. Believe it or not, that's common for a new England gravel bike enthusiast. Its why pros like Ted King call this place home as well as us more gravel casuals or adventuring backpackers. So, if you want to have the absolute best gravel bike ride in the world, come visit us in the Nor'East. It simply must be experienced firsthand. Remember to give us a like and subscribe, drop a comment, share with your fellow riders, it all helps the almighty You Tube Algorithm and really helps the channel grow. Thanks for riding with us today!

I think that's probably the majority of cyclists but racing and strava is pushed harder from a social media standpoint. Challenge is awesome but what are we really doing if we don't have fun in this life?🤔 thank you so much🙏

      They say the grass is always greener. I mean Québec has some fantastic roads to cycle in its own merit.
      Where I'm located I can plan day trips that involve cycling winding roads, cutting through a class 4 road as a short cut up to the Notch on Mt Mansfield then back down into bike paths and parks for quick naps before making a round trip back to the house.

      I know gravel and cycling in general, means different things for everybody but the scenery, the people, and those little moments of presence are what it's all about for us...and maybe the food and coffee stops along the way. In the summer ever ride needs to end at a swim spot too. Great to hear from you btw.

      Well that was one of the nicest, most complimentary comments we've received. All the way from South Africa! A place we've never been but hope to visit someday. It looks incredibly beautiful. Thank you so much for feeling that our content is worthy of your sub and your time. Hmmm, a longer episode might be in the works soon. We tend to make the 10-15 minute episodes because our channel analytics say that's where viewers are done watching but we have a short bikepacking trip soon and I'm thinking to experiment with an extended length version instead of multiple shorter episodes. I actually enjoy making longer ones because I feel like I can make a better paced video that suits the overall vibe of the channel. I really appreciate that feedback. It gave me the little extra push to try it. Much Love from New Hampshire, USA.

      I was just being hyperbolic 😅 but also would totally watch a video of over an hour from you two. I'm no content creator or UA-camr, so I can understand you have to try work to match the analytics and algorithm. I can't speak for everyone, but I would definitely watch a longer video. This one felt like it ended waaaay too soon 😢😅 but I appreciated it nonetheless. Seriously gorgeous scenery and overall vibe 💚
      I've never been to the North East, New England or New Hampshire but from what I've seen it looks absolutely beautiful and idyllic. My best friend lives in New York, so when I visit him and his wife (who is from Vermont) I'll make sure to take time to head up your way. South Africa certainly has some stunning natural beauty. Loads of great gravel biking (or any type of biking) to be done. We'll welcome you with open arms and hospitality if you ever visit 😊 I'm in Durban, Kwa-Zulu Natal if you're interested in seeing what it's like around here. The Drakensberg and Midlands of Natal have some phenomenal landscapes, culture and dirt roads. Plenty of crystal clear and clean rivers and lakes to take a post ride dip in too!
      Enjoy the rest of your weekend 😊

    • @ThatMountainMoment
      @ThatMountainMoment  25 днів тому

      Please do let us know if you visit this way. We'd love to show you around the mountain and rural regions of New England in general. New Hampshire, Maine, Vermont and western Massachusetts is very idyllic and each state very different from the other despite being interconnected. The small towns are what make New England special in my opinion. There's just something very comforting about them. Everywhere feels like home. We've been wanting to visit south Africa for a while now. We have a friend that goes often and says how incredible it is. The landscapes seem so dramatic and vast. Have a great rest of your weekend. I just stumbled upon this and I really enjoyed you guys. Thank you. I live up in the Hudson Valley, New York, so I can relate to that beautiful scenery. I don’t see a lot of gravel here so I mostly ride nice road bike with 32 mm tires and I do have a 29 bike. I have to ask is the gravel bike really worth it? How does it feel to ride that thing on a bumpy gravity dirt road? the only reason to do it is the drop bars the 29 just has so much more stability in my opinion, especially when the road gets tricky or technical. Love to know your thoughts.

      The gravel bike is more efficient than my 29er hardtail and for bikepacking there's a lot more options for mounting things like packs and bottles. Our bikes have a gravel plus tire which is 2.1" wide and a more upright position than a gravel race geometry. We've taken them on some really rugged class 4 and 6 roads and many mtb trails, sometimes with 50lbs of gear and they do quite well. The width of the bars makes the biggest difference in stability. My bike has a 45mm mtb stem and 700mm width drop bars. It's setup to go just about anywhere because a lot of gravel routes around here incorporate some really rough trails. I do think if you have a 29er with drop bars and gravel-ish tires then it might not be worth the cost to buy a gravel bike. Our bikes are salsa journeyman(now called journeyer) and they are categorized by salsa as a drop bar adventure bike made for gravel or bikepacking. We have a series called where we ride the Mountains & Manure Bikepacking Route (MMBR) which shows what a gravel bike is capable of. Here's the link to episode 1👇

      You have some really good gravel just outside of concord in any direction. Glad you got back into riding. It's a beautiful year to be out riding. Everything has bloomed like crazy this spring. RideWithGPS is great and I think building a route from scratch is very rewarding.

      @ThatMountainMoment  16 днів тому

      Vermont for sure, most rides we never see a single car and if we do it's a slow moving farm truck or someone who lives there. Gravel is so popular there that the motorists really give way to the cyclists. You're not to far from the northeast Kingdom area. Check out the area around the town of craftsbury. You can park at the craftsbury outdoor center which is very cool in itself and has a food truck. For a great post ride pizza check out Parker Pie. It's a unique place tucked away in the country side that serves up some really solid homemade pizzas and local beverages.

      Born and raised New Englander so winters are just part of life ha ha but we xc ski, backcountry ski, snowboard, and winter run. The spin bike gets a little use too. Maybe a fat bike if we have the extra money to buy one someday. We do enjoy the snow but always ready for spring when that time comes 🙂
